  • The Nature of Middle-earth edited by Carl F. Hostetter was just released (2. September 2021). It contains some so far unpublished texts of J. R. R. Tolkien. In this stream I give you my first impressions and thoughts. Also a bit of Tolkien Lore Q&A. Video Starts around 4:00 min.
    Hint: the book just came out and I'm still busy editing the Elrond video, so I had not too much time to read yet. As a result I feel a bit unprepared.

    Replacing Glorfindel with Arwen in the movies didn't bother me as much as PJ using the ghost army as a sort of deus ex machina that destroys Sauron's army and saves the day at Minas Tirith. That's probably my biggest complaint from the movies, still love them though.

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes that change doesn't bother me too much either. I think it makes sense for the films. But you are right the use of the Oathbreakers is quite strange. I guess it's difficult to portray the effect of the Corsairs of Umbar and how important it was over at Pelargir that the Oathbreakers and Aragorn (+ company) "defeated" them.

    • @TrangDB9
      @TrangDB9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also the Elves aiding the Rohirrim in Helms Deep was added by PJ, but it's actually made in a cool manner and not really harming the story line.

    Yes, “Vinyar Tengwar” is a perfect example of how not to actually translate text. However, it isn’t totally broken Quenya. “Tengwa” can mean “note” (as in a fragment of text) so “vinyar tengwar” in the sense of “new notes” is a perfectly accurate description of what the publication actually is. Whereas the normal translation of the English idiom “newsletter” (parmapanion) would not accurately describe what VT actually is.

    Hello philosophers games, would you recommend the lotr books to be read in my native language (Dutch ) or English ?

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question. I think depending on how good your English is, Lord of the Rings can be a bit challenging at times. Tolkien uses some unusual words at times and uses a wide vocabulary. I definitely had to look some words up on my first reading. But ofc it's nothing that is impossible. I think reading it in English is worth it though. Some things are hard to translate (some poems, etc) and e.g. Appendix E (about pronunciation) can be quite confusing in translated versions (was the case in the German translation 😅).
      Tolkien was also not happy with all translations (I think the Dutch and Swedish translation was among those). Some translators took quite some liberties, but often there are also different versions by different translators. So hard to say, but ofc many people only know the translated version and and enjoyed it, becoming fans.
      So both ways work, but I guess if you think the English version is fine for you, go for the English version.

      I’ve read both and I can agree that I had to use a dictionary near me while reading LoTr. In the dutch appendices, there’s however an section ‘Lord of the Rings in Dutch’, where they tell that Tolkien was quite content with the translation of Max Schuchart. Just wanted to say that😉

    Nomen- clay-chur, so basically nomen, clay as in pottery, chur as in church, 4 syllables, the no-men is pronounced quickly and together, as in noman, so one word. I'm no linguist, hopefully that helps you with a western pronunciation, awesome live stream, always look forward to a long drive home when you post a new Livestream, looking forward to your Elrond video, take your time so your satisfied with it! No, nothing about Dorwinion as far as I know (searched the document).
      There are some information on what was going on with the early Elves (in the east, in Cuiviénen) and where they went during the great Journey. Also some distance and population information. Also some philosophical discussions, that might be interesting. But if you mean Easterlings, etc, no there seems to be nothing.

    Do you enjoy doing these livestreams, or do you feel obligated to do them to satisfy your subscribers? You don't have to answer lol I was just curious. I can tell you your subscribers do enjoy them because they are more casual, cover a variety of topics, your real personality comes through more than a rehearsed, scripted video. Have a great day.

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes I enjoy streaming and I also stream 1-2 times per week on Twitch and play video games. I try to stream more often on YT again (bi-weekly as planned), when my video is done. It's not just to satisfy my subscribers. What I like about it is how fast I create content in comparison. That was like over 3 hours of content I just produced. Doing 3 hours in an edited and scripted form takes me like half a year.
      Happy you enjoy the streams :)

    • @ThePhilosophersGames
      @ThePhilosophersGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think my subscriber growth is really slow, considering that this channel started 2013 and I do LotR content for almost 5 years (since March 2017) 😅 All other LotR channels that started with me surpassed me by at least factor 4 already. It's really a thing that worries me greatly, because many people watch my stuff for hours, but 90% are non-subscribers. But don't get me wrong, it's already really lucky that I reached 40k at all. Never expected that when I started.
      But I would not tie a face-reveal to a sub goal. I want people to sub, because they like my content, not because of some goal. And for the content I produce my face is also pretty irrelevant.

    Yeah, like if you read the books, you know just how bad at stealth they really are.
    One dude went fully black, in other words, naked. Guy's what. You could see him clearly.
    That's right, in pitch black, you can see these guys. It's like they bright black light.
    Like if you in pitch dark and look out into a plain or into a picth black cave, and one is there, you will see a black humanoid shadow.
    .
    So like , when they go naked, they literally become more noticible, even in pitch dark.
    Like in pitch black, there brown cloaks are cammofloge, and they literally try to take advantage of the dark, and they more visible because there are basically a lightbulb and they took off there clothe because they are same color as night.
    But they don't sit there and realize that darkness is not a type of light but their darkness is, so they can be seen in pitch dark more clearly if the brown clothes don't block their light.
    It is Hilarious.
    Oh, it's dark out, get naked.
    Don't look brotha.
    You are litteraly the same color, can't distinguish between any part of you, no one can see any detail on any part of you.
    I don't care, don't look.
    THen you wonder why the book also says about people getting sick and dying by these guys breathing on them..
    Don't look at my balls.
    YOu don't have balls, you are a black shadow.
    I said don't look.
    I'm not, and I woulnd';t be able to see anything anyway. You are one solid shadow.
    I can't see anything.
    I don't care don;t look.
    Man, I'm to afraid of you to look at your balls man.
    How do you know I have balls if you can't see them,
    because you are telling me not to look at them, despite being clocked in shadows. You aint naked.
    yes I am
    see? that's how I know you have balls and are naked. We can't see anything, yet you still don't want us to look. Obviously, you think you are naked, but you aren't, you are a shadow.
    I am naked, don't look.
    Fine whatever, you are scary talking ghost anyway. I don't even want to look at you.
