Carl seems like a really educated and level headed guy, The perfect type of person to edit some of Tolkien's last works. Christopher Tolkien knew what he was doing when he decided to pick him to edit his fathers last manuscripts. Great video as always Matt! :)

I've got to be honest, I was a little sceptical about Carl Hostetter editing the new book, but this interview made me change my mind and realise why Christoper Tolkien chose him. What an inspirational and wonderful man!

My take on the mentioned Gandalf scene in the movies.
To me, he was describing the after life journey himself went trough to Pip knowing very well this was not the journey destined to the young hobbit, but said that as a meaning of giving hope to him before what at the time in the movie felt like a certain death to all, but thats what religion and catholicism is all about in the end, giving hope so I dont think it was a betrayal or against the themes of the saga, but I understand his point about not liking the films, for the hardcores it would never be good enough and that is understandable, there are plenty of other examples that could have used instead of that though.
But overall it was a great talk to hear, its great to hear the backstage story of the releases of so many books, and it was fun to hear him mentioning the Silmarillion when talking about his fav chars, because usually people dont talk enough about it. And his point about the elves I agree 100% and that was great to listen to, The Hobbit and TLOTR are great but The Silmarillion is simply a masterpiece of the highest order.

WOW! I love his explanation as to how he first came along the Tolkien works. I was also in middle school...LOL - I almost typed Middle Earth... I got into a little trouble and one of my teachers no longer wanted me in her class. The Vice Principle gave me the choice of either sitting in her office for an hour each day or I could work as an aide in the library. I quickly chose the library and soon after became intimately familiar with the Dewey Decimal System. A week or two later the librarian had me pulling old books off the shelves they were going to destroy and replace. One of those books on the list was The Hobbit. I remembered Tolkien's name from somewhere and I asked the librarian if I could keep it. After a 5 minute speech of how much trouble she could get into for giving me the book, she blotted out the schools name and tore out the library index card holder. It was the first book I read cover to cover. Thank you Ms. Henderson for kick starting my life long love of everything Middle Earth.

It's quite bittersweet that we'll no longer receive any new Tolkien content after this new book, at least for the time being since things can still very well change as Mr Hostetter stated, however unlikely it may be. I suppose that's all the more reason to appreciate and cherish what we DO have. And there's also the Amazon series as well that will be airing September of next year. And should it turn out to be a major success, we may very well finally receive a Silmarillion adaptation, preferably as a tv series since there's too much content packed within it and how it's not your typical novel for it to function properly as a series of movies.

Circa 33:00 - Yep I've always felt that the base story of his world (that of Melkor's betrayal and then what is essentially Sauron's cult of Melkor) borrows heavily from the Christian story of Satan, and that everything else within the story is either a product of his bottom-up constructivist-linguistic work, or is a top-down product of that fundamental Satan plot. And yeah I say this as an agnostic person with an interest in literally all of our world's religions, particularly in regards to how they relate to such things as mythology, cultural precepts, deified stories of true events, etc etc.
