      Everyone is coming back! ...But they're not gonna hang out much at all. Han & Luke? Nope. Oh, and in each movie one of them dies. Brilliant. I'm so stoked because I've waited forever for this...even it they're kinda remakes with few new ideas. Looking back at it, the Disney Star Wars trilogy is the biggest fuck up in Hollywood history.
      Purely because they had everything available and messed up.
      Now, many of the original cast members have passed away, so it is now completely impossible to do a good Star Wars sequel.

      This perfectly captures my sentiment walking out of the theater. I was questioning my entire existence as a Star Wars fan. I distinctly remember walking to my car and thinking, do I actually hate Star Wars? An existential crisis is really not what you want to have happen coming out of a tentpole blockbuster.

      Same thing with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.....
      I guess, it's not a good idea, when you wait 20, or even 30 fuckin' years to make the next movie of a classic film franchise, especially when CGI has completely taken over and movies are more like fuckin' video games.....

    Its crazy. The original movies were so iconically great that, despite 2/3 of this series being entirely unwatchable, ppl still care about the franchise enough for the discussion to continue. Just shows how good those originals were.

      Eh the originals are not “great” also. Even Empire is not that good(Rogue One is better). The franchise is relevant because of marketing, toys, exposure..capitalism 101. Empire is definetly a good movie though and it has some heart.

    A couple things that are messed up about TLJ is that Finn goes through the exact same character arc that he does in TFA.
    He starts the movie as a selfish coward that wants to run away, but the actions of his friends inspire him to be brave.
    He's also on the reviewing end of a speech from Rose about how war and slavery is bad. Finn, a black man who was brainwashed child soldier needed to be told that war is bad.

    This is a great review, well done. Yea I felt the same way about Luke...While I don't think it makes sense to have Luke Skywalker go through a time of extreme doubt and disillusion with the world after having arrived enlightened and triumphant after his huge hero's journey of the original 3 movies, I do think that it's artistically *possible* to have a Luke arc that is like that, like you say in your review.. If it was handled correctly. They just don't give Luke anywhere near the seriousness and respect, and just plot definition to back up portraying him like that, and it's not even close

    The next two movies were also huge.

    Star Wars died when it was bought by Disney, that's my take. As a former student of the film critic Howie Moshovitz I really appreciated your review of the film. I saw it in the theatre with my brother and I was so bitterly disappointed. I didn't even bother to go see Rise of Skywalker. As a whole I pretty much agree with your assessment of the film. It was a very "pretty film," but ultimately a completely disappointing and frustrating film that betrayed/pissed off the fans. It was also soul crushing because movies were always a source of joy and escapism for me. This movie tore my heart out from my chest, threw it on the floor and stomped on it. They did Luke dirty, and Mark Hamill tried to subtly try warn us. He even said to the director, (which one I forget), "I like everyone's part but mine."

    Gilroy’s work has been SO GOOD & second only to Lucas’s 6 films. Gilroy has shown he can write deeply engaging stories on a budget without the clutch of too much CGI & tacky nostalgia. It would undoubtedly be so profitable.

      “ Andor” while def better than Obiwan and Bobba - has a similar issue almost all Disney shows have: a lot of padding, very little momentum. The Master Stretcher apprach. Why do 6 good episodes if we can make 4 good ones and 6 fillers. Boom. We have 10.
      I don’t agree that a show can be called “a slow burner” just because it’s “slow” considering the episodes are short and have characters having pedestrian-level bickering chats dressed as high drama. A space (soap) opera.
      It’s like if Game of Thrones characters instead of discussing GoT matters (that are progressing story) would argue about alloys variants that are used to make the iron throne’s swords. I mean yeah, but maybe not for 80% of the episode?
      Mostly fat very little meat. It seems that star wars fans (which I slowly feel not one of much) will love anything star wars as long as it has that “grounded gritty feel”. Otherwise how would we (grown man) justify watching a wizzing space cartoon 😈
      As mentioned above - give Edwards some credit, R1 didn’t feel as “soapy” as A does. There’s so many scenes in Andor that feel like cheap soap opera.

      To be fair, Dave Filoni is solid too. Gilroy, in so far as making a trilogy, would also be a very different tone, and possibly polarising too.... don't get me know, I am fan of what he is / has made, and am keen to see more. Just in so far as a mainline trilogy, I don't think thats where Gilroy would even want to play.

      @@andrewj1754 you’re right about that, and perhaps Gilroy wouldn’t be too interested in a helm position… or even in making a strictly adaptive work of preexisting novels, as he seems to be given wide freedom in his past screenplays.
      … he had a really interesting podcast interview with Marc Marron about 2 months ago where he discussed the writing process for Andor & his conversations with Kathleen Kennedy. He loved the idea of crafting a Star Wars show without Star Wars “royalty”, Jedi, lightsabers, force battles, massive space battles, etc… but rather showing how mostly unremarkable people in the galaxy react amidst the rising tide of revolution & authoritarian crack-downs.
      Since he made such an engaging story without many of those nostalgic crutches, I think it’d be so impactful to see how he tastefully treats those classic Star Wars tropes as well… and in the concentrated form of 2.5 hour mainline films instead of drawn-out streaming series’.

    I was once a huge Star Wars fan since the 1980s. I had played tons of games and collected a bunch of stuff from this franchise. In the 2000s I had bought Master Replicas AT-AT and X-Wing studio scale models. Wasn't cheap.
    But TLJ ended all that for me. I was so angry with what Disney was doing, I wanted to leave the theater early but I couldn't, because I was there with family.
    The Prequel Trilogy had issues but I still liked them overall. Original Trilogy FTW. Han shot first and all that. But the Sequel Trilogy killed the franchise in my eyes. I went and saw Rise of Skywalker because family wanted to see it and I didn't want to be a downer. Outside that reluctant return, I have never truly come back to the franchise.
    Every time I stumble into Star Wars stuff on the internet, even if it's from the Prequel or Original Trilogy, or even the well done Clone Wars series, it's all tainted. It's tainted by the Sequel Trilogy and the damage it did to the franchise. I listen in on what's going on in Star Wars and it's still the same stupid stuff that began in TLJ.

    I really like TLJ because it delves into a lot of the ideas that weren't present in other movies that i always thought would be interesting. The idea of a main villian without the Emperor, a person who was chosen by the force to create the balance without a royal bloodline, the set up of a creating a new jedi order from scratch. Seeing Luke as a person and not the mythic black or white character. A stormtrooper joining the rebels and learning to stop running. A hotshot pilot learning that heroics have consequences and sometimes being the best at war is being the best at restraint and conserving as opposed to fighting. They are character arcs and plotlines I love and thought they were interesting things to explore in a Middle chapter. It's just too bad they were immediately ignored in favor of borderline fanfic Rise of Skywalker.
    The movie is messy mainly because alot of lingering plotlines that JJ left for Rian to address without an outline. JJ killed Han Solo. JJ separated all of the OG heroes. JJ didn't give any background on how the dark side rose up again, and the first order gained so much power in only a few decades. JJ left so much and gave so little. I have zero doubt that if Rian was hired from the beginning, his trilogy would have been great.

    • @sounghungi
      @sounghungi ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I would disagree with this immensely. The problems of the TLJ wasn't due to what JJ setup. There are some problems but the main issues come from how Rian breaks the lore and characters of Star Wars. Luke saw good in Darth Vader somebody who was far more dangerous and evil than Ben when he was in Luke's school yet Luke went to go kill him for what reason? This is a person who felt the power of the emperor so he felt darkness far greater than Ben's before. Also by using hyperspace as a weapon begs the question on why it wasn't used before if a single ship could be used to destroy massive capital ships, why wasn't this maneuver used before? Also Rian straight up turned Hux into a joke because he thought Hux was funny. That information comes straight from Rian himself. Which is a problem if Hux is supposed to be a villian, having him be a joke isn't a good idea. I could go on and on about the questionable writing in TLJ but to try to caulk it up to JJ's loose threads is questionable.

    • @mrbrandonmartin388
      @mrbrandonmartin388 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @sounghungi
      1. Luke says in the film that it was a shameful moment of weakness to light up his lightsaber above Ben. The only reason to me that this feels weaker than it should is because we don't see Kylo actually become more evil than Vader, which was a possibility in episode 9. Kylo could have been way more devastatingly cruel than Vader if the storyline of him being the singular ruler of the galaxy without an Emperor or succession of power around him. He killed Snoke, hoping Rey would join him. When that doesn't happen, the atrocities he was going to commit would have been immense if JJ would have actual followed that up.
      2. Hux was never meant to be an important villain. In the OT, all imperial officials were bland and sometimes bumbling idiots, with the exception of Tarkin, of course. Having Hux have a kind of nervous and slimy energy really entertained me. I was fine with it.
      3. The ship being used to destroy the first order fleet also doesn't bother me mainly because it served the moment of conflict in the story. Having Holdo turn out to be the one who makes not only the sacrifice but does it in a way that sends the message to the First Order was satisfying. Star Wars has a long history of the force, weapons, and abilities being used in ways that work to fit that scene or plot point and nothing else. Of course, if the rebels wanted, they could have just flown any ship into the biggest enemy ships, disabling them, but we also wouldn't have a movie. I dont think that its a big enough moment because even if we removed it and just had Holdo distract them by flying off course or whatever, the end result is still Holdo dying and buying the resistance some time. I've read that there is some conflicting lore on whether it's even possible, but I'm willing to accept it for what it is as a moment in the story.

    • @sounghungi
      @sounghungi ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mrbrandonmartin388 1. Just because he said it was a shameful moment of weakness doesn't mean anything. We as the audience has seen Luke and what kind of person he is. Just because the writers will the character to say it doesn't mean it makes sense.
      2. Hux was the First Order's commander aside from Vadar. Making him weak makes the First Order weak and makes them less of a threat which is a problem if you have to make the audience feel like there are dangerous stakes involved.
      3. Again you're missing the point. If what Holdo did was a viable way to destroy massive amounts of ships with only a single ship, then why hasn't this been used in the past. Why would people bother making large ships which could easily be destroyed by this maneuver. This moment breaks the lore of the series and makes ship battles pointless because realistically speaking they would just kamikaze small ships into large ones if they got the chance. You said it yourself "they could have just flown any ship into the biggest enemy ships, disabling them, but we also wouldn't have a movie" which is the problem. Why create a situation that calls into question everything else before it. Why wouldn't real people in real life try to use this the first chance they got? If there was maneuver like this in real life during war, do you think commanders would saying, "oh well if we do this, there'll be no war."
