There's nothing like going "multimedia" for the first time, with a CD-ROM and a soundcard. It felt like a new era. You'd get a CD full of demos and that's your Saturday gone. It was a Day of the Tentacle, alright.
I used to build houses in The Sims that used the swimming pool for hallways on the first floor. At one point somebody died in a kitchen fire, and the grim reaper had to swim to their body. I think the dead Sims' spouse managed to convince the grim reaper to give them back a zombie.
Video game addiction is real and it can be harmful. However, I think that addictive aspect has to be built into the game purposefully. My go to example is OG World of Warcraft. It has many dark patterns built into this that are designed to get it's hooks into unsuspecting players. Also most Mobile games are built this way also.
if people with addiction problems are turning to games then it's better than them turning to drugs, alcohol, gambling or other harmful things. Games aren't generally physically harmful for you aside from lack of exercise, lack of sleep or getting carpal tunnel syndrome or console thumb.
When you have the original on some inconvenient medium (like a cartridge/tape/disk/disc/stack of punchcards for a system you don’t have the space to set up or the skills to keep alive), is there anything *morally* wrong with using a convenient pirated copy with an emulator?
You don't play the bad guy in The Speed Rumbler, you're trying to beat the bad guy and rescue the captured villagers. It was a recent Tubers High Score Challenge which was my choice because I remembered when it was in my local pub 🙂 As soon as Neil said Danish ships with barcodes I knew what was coming. Getting an early start with the Dad Jokes 😂
Mmmm... Commodore phone... I recall Nostalgia Nerd (TH-cam name, not real name 😮) ran a video sometime ago about that. I recall it was someone in Italy that believed they had the rights to the Commodore name. It was unclear if they did have the ownership. On reused branding. Do Sports Direct still churn out Umbro kit? Is someone else churning out Sports Direct kit? More importantly is someone else churning out Amiga kit? Besides Amiga Kit that is. 🤭
During the 80s I was (and still am) a fan of video games, heavy metal and horror movies - all 3 were targeted with the whole "it will make kids go evil!" crap. Funny thing is I'm 50 and never been in trouble with the law. You'd think because of all 3 I should have gone on a rampage by now - but no. It's a load of crap.
Star Raiders was Atari Corp (the Tramiel Atari). Gauntlet 1 & 2 were Atari Games. Tengen was founded in 1988, Gauntlet 2 was published in 1988 and must have been one of the last Atari Games ports not published under the Tengen name. The Tengen ports did come out pretty quickly after the Arcade games. Klax for example was a 1990 arcade game that came out on the ST in the same year. I've always thought of Tengen as Atari, I would play some of these games in Arcades and then see them ported under the Tengen name.
talk regrets. I still remember the year and store that I walked in bought Tengen Tetris for the NES. original first run. to me it was just Tetris. I also remember the year and store I traded it and 25 other carts for a "black box" for cable. (I may have made out money wise in the end I still regret it.)
While the variety of games which came out during the DOS era of gaming was huge, I kind of disagree with Dave's statement as its being the best of gaming ever. I think the fragmentation of the hardware during the DOS era really ruined the consumer experience of most games - compatibility with 3d cards (D3D/Glide/3DFX) and Sfx cards (too many too recall) meant, for me at least, that I rarely experienced the games as they were intended. It was a different time, and I was happy to play half-life at 10 FPS, but my experience with the Amiga was a consistantly better
Someone has probably already beaten me to this, but I'll say it anyway. The history, to my knowledge, goes: - Atari Corp (computers/consoles) and Atari Games (arcade) split - Atari Games established Tengen brand to release their arcade stuff at home (sometimes via other publishers such as Domark) - Legal chaos - Warner (who owned Atari Corp for a while) got the Atari Games brand back - Warner sold the Atari Games brand to Midway (hence all the Atari Games titles in the three Midway Arcade Treasures releases on Xbox/PS2) - In more recent years, since the dissolution of Midway, all their stuff (including the Atari Games stuff) has returned to Warner, who are now sitting on it all and doing naff all with it
Umm... your not a criminal in Syndicate, your just a corporate operative. The stuff your doing, though highly immoral, is totally legal in the cyberpunk dystopia that game takes place in.

I like what gog has done where a retro game is brought back and worked on to be used in modern pc's and sometimes have a reccommended mod package.
Special Reserve were a brilliant shop. Bought so many things from them back in the day.

Best year for gaming is this year thanks to decades of games to choose from.
I liked the homage to darts with the episode 180!
Tengen is pronounced with a hard G.
As you said Neil it's a Japanese word from the game Go and is an era in Japanese history.
Fine flags Dave... No Scotland, no party!

In my view (Dave) absolutely nothing at all.

Ah, this music at the start/end, brings me back to my childhood.
It is possible to die on two hills, you just have to stack them!

@Dave. I would never say the Amiga IS dead! IT'S NOT DEAD DAM IT, ITS NOT! IT CAN'T DIE!!😢

I'm siding with Dave. The DOS gaming era is the best gaming era. 😉
Is Neil wearing a sweater in summer?
most evil thing is to trap your sims in a room with just windows and a kitchen, waiting for it to catch fire...
Greetz from the Netherlands 🇳🇱⚽😭

and to add to that, the variety of the games on amiga were no less awesome
Ten Gen not "Ten Jen."
テンゲン
Such as the G in Garage or Gone.
So its not like a truncated "Generation"? Thanks.
What even is a catio?!
That should be explained in the next show!
