Love my MK 1. What a multitasker knife. Plenty of tactical DNA in the MK1. Great review for us KA BAR fans. Thanks

I own 3 Kabars. 1 is USMC, 1 is Chinese knockoff, and last is Shorty Model. The Shorty gets lot of belt time, the knockoff cuts down weeds in backyard. The USMC full size is in my Big Out bag if needed. All are fine knives. No issues. Good luck.

All kabar Mark 2 Knives made after 1945 were made for the commercial/civilian market. Camillus made the majority of the Mark 2 knives for the Military. Military Spec's on the Mark 2 Never called for polished handles and powder coated blades.

Okay, first off, it's a stalk or stick tang, not a "rat tail".
The tang in a Ka-Bar tapers from about 3/4 inch at the blade down to what you see sticking through the pommel cap. It's one solid piece of steel that's integral to the blade.
A rat-tail tang is what you get if you cut that tang off about an inch into the grip, then weld a piece of quarter inch mild steel rod stock to that. It's basically a 2-piece tang.
This type of tang is weak as hell, and will almost always break at the weld under any sort of use.

Super interesting. Thanks for the informed comment. Both of the KaBars are still going very strong for me and are some of my favorite hiking knives. Admittedly I am more of a gun guy than a blade guy but I definitely appreciate good blades. Again, thanks for the good info. Take care, and have an awesome day!

@@TheMaineiacguy - Glad to be of help.
A couple of other things, while I'm here:
There's another Ka-Bar you might want to add to your collection... a 1266 "Modified Tanto".
I just received one the other day, and it looks to be a very good knife.
Also, I've been into guns about as long as I have knives.
When the parts show up, I'm going to try to restore my grandfather's old H&R 732 in .32 long back to working order.
With any luck, I should get the new hand and trigger spring back in it without a problem, and get it back to being a shooter rather than just a family heirloom.

Take a look to the Case USMC, which is made by Ontario for Case.
It has the real zinc-phospate coating, and no plastic spacers.
For me, it´s the better Mark 2 knife.

I am personally a subscriber to the idea that there is no substitute for the original. And in many cases you get what you pay for but that's just me.

Good video but a couple of corrections. The MK2 was not an upgrade from the USN MK1. They were separate contracts for different purposes but issued for the same reason; the service personnel were brining their own knives along. In the Navy MK1 case they wanted a 5 inch utility knife and they based it on pre-war Marble and Ideal knives. In the MK2 case, Marines and soldiers didn't care for the old WW1 MK1 (maybe that's what you meant?) trench knives they were being issued, so they were bringing along their own hunting knives. The MK2 contract had around a dozen suppliers and the knife was again based on the 7 inch blades similar to Marbles and Ideal hunting knives, although Union cutlery had a 7" leather stacked hunting knife out before the war. Also, neither of these are "rat tail" tangs but what are called "hidden, full tangs". A rat tail is screwed or welded to the knife blade while a full tang is a continuance of the blade, but just not as wide (spine to edge) as the blade. These are both GREAT knives and I own both. I purchased my first MK2 at the Marine Corps Exchange at MCAS New River where I was stationed in 1983. I did have to replace the leather sheath a few years ago, but the blade is in great shape for 38 years old. I bought one as well for my father as a Christmas present the same year. It replaced his hunting knife that he had been using since the early 50's and he thought it was the best knife he owned. My son inherited it when he passed away a few years ago and I'm sure my son will be able to use it for years to come. I purchased them for my daughter and son-in-law who are both in the Army and both of them say they are the most used tools whenever they go out to the field. I personally knew 3 Marines and several soldiers (mostly relatives) who fought in WW2, and all of them swore by the MK2 knives they were issued. My uncle who served on a minesweeper in the south pacific brought his MK1 home and used it for everything. Excellent choice on purchasing these knives and used for what they're intended for, they'll last you a lifetime.

      You’re wrong about the tang.
Both are a continuation of the blade not screwed on, a rat tail is just significantly thinner than the blade and handle, a full tang fills up the entire cross section of the handle from top to bottom and is goes all the way to the end of the handle.
      Kabars are stick tangs.

It works amazing on the stacked leather handles of a KaBar. Thanks for stopping by the channel and checking out our video. Have a wonderful day my friend!
