I had an idea the other day too - when I’m not using it as a camper, I could remove the bed from its frame and replace with a steel shelving unit to store my tools ⚒️
Hi I just bought the same van and am finding your videos so helpful. I've subscribed! Can you tell me what bolts you used I think you say M10 for tie down holes but what about ceiling. What type of M10 bolts are they. I don't want to buy the wrong ones in screwfix either!
Thanks Leigh - welcome aboard 👍 can you tell me which part of which video? If I watch back the same part I’ll be able to tell you exactly what I used 😃
@@AtypicalWorkshop Thank you. i binged watched them all till 2am :-). At 3 mins 27 in ep 8 you are bolting cross beams into ceiling using M6. Then at 1.06 in ep 10 you use M10 bolts to tie batons to the floor in the existing tie die holes. When i put M10 into screwfix, lots of options! How did you even know which ones to use, how does one learn this stuff about the van? How did you? Looking forward to the next video.
The bolts that hold the cross pieces in place - I think they are m10 coach bolts. I made use of the existing holes so you’ll be able to work what size if it’s not m10. You’ll want bolts long enough to got all the way through to the opposite cross piece so that you can put a washer and lock nut on the other end. For the batons on the wall of the van, I drilled m9 holes which take an m6 rivnut. I then used countersunk m6 machine screws (screwfix code 5595J) to secure the battens to the rivnuts.
For the floor, the m10 bolts were just used to hold the batons in place when I was creating the grid, and to add pressure when the sikaflex was drying. I removed them before laying the plywood floor. In fact, those bolts are probably what I ended up using to secure the ceiling cross pieces! Have a look on Toolstation as well, sometimes cheaper. Also worth checking out the b&q pick and mix if you don’t want a large box of bolts left over. See if you can find a local nuts and bolts shop too - they’re great for things like that. My rivnut set only had 10 m6 rivnuts included and this was the most economical option to get more
And to answer your other question, lots of trial and error and lots of TH-cam. Try to watch multiple videos of the same process so you can see which approaches might be best 👍
In theory it prevents moisture created inside the van (cooking, breathing etc) from reaching the metal walls of the van and causing rust because the walls are typically inaccessible behind all of your insulation and wood wall panels. I have made the decision not to use a vapour barrier this time around because in such a small van it’s impossible the vapour barrier everything, so I’ll let it all breathe instead. Hope this helps!
Just got my 2010... ready to start conversion. Mine will need modification from your design... sliding doors on both sides. What 3d program do you use... I use 3ds Max. I wouldn't mine getting your 3d file so I don't have to start from scratch... for a donation of course.
Thanks for the comment! I used Sketchup, but the model was purchased from Hum3D (hum3d.com/3d-models/ford-transit-connect-lwb-2012/). The model was then rendered and animated using Twinmotion! I wouldn't recommend Sketchup for that model, as it's not a powerful enough application. Looks as though it's available as a .max file though 😀. Sorry I can't send you a file - I would if I had created the model myself!
@@AtypicalWorkshop Thanks, I'll purchase from Hum3d. Already bought the 190Ah battery bank and Thor 1500w pure sine inverter. Tonight I'm installing the Curt #13076 hitch. This is going to be a fun project.
Adorable Mia is having a wonderful time in a beautiful setting.
She's the best! It's her favourite spot for sure :)
Looking forward to seeing that bed when it's done! Looks really interesting :)

what is the vapor barrier for?
