  • Do it yourself granite kitchen counters part 5. How to polish a rough cut to a nice shine with various sandpaper grits. I start by sanding with an 80 grit with my random orbital sander and work my way up to 2000 grit wet sanding. I also show how to fabricate a rounded or bullnose edge

I have been turned down by two professionals, I simply wanted them to recut an existing counter top. Both wanted to sell me new granite (not an option). Your video has been a Godsend. I have fitted multiple laminated wooden kitchen tops, but never thought I could cut the granite myself.
Great pacing, high quality video work, info was PERFECT.
    Huge Thanks,

    hi dude!!
i don't know you and you definetly dont know me but i just wanted to stop by and from the bottom of my heart thank you for this series os videos of how you remodeled your kitchen
i honestly dont know anything about house duty and seeing you cutting granite and all the stuff you did you really encouraged me to give it a shot. i've had for almost a year my granite plaques just sitting on my living room and i have just finished the grill part of the kitchen
i followed every single tip you gave, from the "ear protection people" to "finish the sink hole inside with the hand cutter"
    Again, thank you
    From Monterrey México 😎

if you have an angle grinder and a 4” backer, it’s probably a little easier to get a set of wet/dry polishing pads for granite. you can pay a lot for a set ($100ish), but it’s totally possible to get excellent results from a cheaper set ($20-30). probably get a better, more consistent result in a lot less time. you can’t complain about what you managed to achieve though

But I do think you could’ve saved a lot of time and effort by hiring someone to do this job for you. Just your labor cost alone for the help you hired could’ve easily been used to get this professionally installed. If I took on this job I would’ve been done in about 2 hours and charged 400

Definitely on budget. All by yourself and a lot of hard work, but nicely done and good results at the end. Hey to fill the seam, ask some of your local stone fabricators to give you a little bit of "Knife Grade Epoxy" and some "Hardener Paste", mix it up quickly and dress the seam with it. Scrape off the excess with a razor edge. It will look like from prefab store.

I hear ya'. We just had few people asking how to do seams, so we helped them with their 3 months countertop project where it already cost them an unpaid vacation, a mess all over the basement or garage and a pile of unusual tools that now has to be soled on CraigsList because they will never again use them in their lives. However, I always tell them that it is unpatriotic to buy this prefab Chinese and Indian crap!

I was merely trying to paint the picture of the fun part of our business where we don't mind so much helping out but in fact we are glad to see them in our shop, and then you realize that you are actually helping out some Indian or Chinese business that pay their workers $0.32 an hour until their backs break or until they die, but far from blaming makers of prefabricated countertops in India or China I blame Americans that buy it from them!
Was that short enough for ya'? :-)

man I live in brazil and actually we do have a P120 sandpaper speacial for granites. In addition, while going up the grits we follow a sandpaper combination given by an European norm. The combination tell us to follow either the 36,50,80,120,180,240,320,500 or 40,60,100,150,220,280,400,600 sandpaper numbers. I also believe that yo could have saved a lot of papers if u used the special sandpaper for granites.

There is an easier way, go to the granite store, pick out a beautiful piece of granite, find a professional granite cutter to cut, install and polish the stone. That’s what we did. Our kitchen is twice as big as his, we got a 32” x 60” piece cut for our coffee bar and we have another granite slab for our master vanity, which is 22” x 60”. This includes a backsplash for the coffee bar and bathroom vanity. Total cost $3300.00. Not bad right?
Hey, there’s some things I do myself. I ripped out and demoed the old kitchen and installed the Kraftmaid Kitchen Cabinets. I’m doing all the trim work, arabesque tile backsplash for kitchen, new Flooret Rigid Vinyl plank flooring throughout the house and remodeling two bathrooms. But the granite...no way baby!
I give this gentleman major, major kudos. I just told my wife that I know my limits. Awesome job!

In addition to the previous comment regarding attaching the filler piece before sanding the edge, why didn't you use stone polishing pads and your grinder instead of 30+ pieces of sand paper? Amazon.com has them fairly inexpensive and you would have saved a lot of time with better results...

    • @jenniesgarage

Polishing with a grinder requires a variable speed grinder; a decent one will run you about $150. Also, polishing must be done wet, which complicates things and requires extra safety precautions.

Disclaimer I'm not a pro and also an amateur...I almost made the mistake of doing what he did and was going to use sandpaper on my sander to polish. After a few more videos and research thank God I didn't. I actually went to the store and didn't get the and paper only because i wanted 5" and they only had 6". I'm so thankful. His result looks pretty good I'm sure but if you have more than 1 edge you will be there for days and develop tennis elbow. Also I don't like how he eased his edge with a cutting wheel, I feel could possibly look rough and splintered . For the amount of sand paper he bought he could have just bought a set of Wet/dry diamond pads for his sander instead. That's probably the best thing to do but I didn't do that tho...I got a set of polishing wheels for my angle grinder from harbor freight for $15. Came with 40, 80, 220, 400, 600 grit wheels. I used to ease the edge and polish and came out great. If I want to wet sand with something higher 1000+ I could but looks fine. I Took 5-10 minutes per edge. I can't imagine sanding out the blade swirls with just normal 80 grit sand paper! I'm in no way hating, I appreciate the video just sharing what worked for me. I probably did it wrong also I am sure. Thanks

you did such a nice job and the videos are great but I cant stop shaking my head at this step, just cut a strip of unused slab then epoxy it in place before you sand and polish the edge is the "proper" way to do it. all that nice work and you create such an eye sore hack job to finish the job, what a shame when it wouldnt have been any more work to just do it right the first time. why, why, why, why??????? not just do it right by doing a little more sanding for a professional looking invisible line on that edge. also the epoxy filler needs to be added to your seam joints when it is installed so the entire seam is filled and not just added on top as you intend to do later which only gets a very small fragile amount of epoxy onto the very top edge of the seam.

Hahahaha I like your enthusiasm, I respect that you tried but the work is so bad I think it gave me cancer. A+ for effort though.

WTF!!!!!! This is so bad, sandpaper?! On granite?! Ally you have done is burnt and destroyed your edge, waves and bumpy. And one more thing you have been cutting and fitting that granite for a couple of days, it's an 8 hour job to template, cut, polish and fit, you should be ashamed
