I started running just under a year ago and in that time I have managed to go from a 30 minute 5k, to 25 minutes, I am running Manchester marathon and have a self designed 70 mile run from my childhood home to my current home for British Heart Foundation in June. I'm not going out for record times, I'm going to grind out the distances and prove to myself I can do it. Doing it to show that inner child who was sitting inside them all along.

"My fitness is not where I want it to be..." is what I have said to myself after every other run past age 50. And then I gratefully reflect on the times that I couldn't run at all.
You can run, just keep going! Love your work, James et al at TRC❤❤😊

Such a great motivation! "Use that as fuel" is so recognizable. I once had a manager who was a runner and when I said I ran half marathons before she said "Ow I assume that's a long time ago". I was depressed and was trying to eat that away. I left that job during covid. Lost 35 kilo's, found a way better job, cycled for 8k km's a year for the last few years and training again for a half marathon.
Sometimes I wish to see that manager again, just to show her how much happier and fitter I am despise her comments.

Enjoy Your first 100 miles! Or at least try to as long as possible. I'm also awaiting for my first in the beginning of May. In fact, it's a strange format: 24 h race on foot, starting at one point, and ending 24 h later as far as possible from the start point, every participant can choose their on direction and path. Needless to say, there are no aid stations, I'm on my own, relying on shops and gas stations. My plan is to cover about 100 miles within 24 hours. And so far I have also finished some 100 km races. I'm excited, but also a bit scared. Scared of the unknown. I'm rooting for You!

You just made me laugh out loud at the period comment... classic! Re: PE teachers... the only time my PE teacher ever took an interest in me was when we tried hurdles, and he realised I could jump over things. But I was too slow running between the actual hurdles... so I was once again dismissed, because if you run slow, doesn't matter how good you are at jumping, you'll lose. I distinctly remember that initial hope that I wasn't a lost cause, and then the disappointment of being relegated back to the no-hopers. I didn't try running again until I was 37. I'm still slow, but I run on trails, so I enjoy myself now. Looking forward to seeing you smash 100 miles.

I started running last July with a goal to do a 100 miler in the next 2 years. I’m 52, I’ve been an avid hiker the last couple of years but it will definitely be a stretch to get to 100 miles. First marathon last September, First 50k in October, first 100k planned for April. Battling through the niggles has been the biggest issue. I am doing 8-10 hours of time on feet (40-50 trail mails, 10,000 ft of elevation/wk). It is amazing what a positive mindset will get you. Best of luck on your journey.

Absolutely loved this James, thank you so much! I was excluded from PE when in school as I have Beckers' Muscular Dystrophy. I gained a lot of weight and started to use a powered wheelchair about 7 years ago (21st) and now down to just under 15st having started running then. People telling me i can't or shouldn't do stuff just drives me more.. I've since done London Marathon and GNR amongst other running events. with GNR again this year and a place in London (although deferred to 2025). My plan in the next 18 months or so is to try and do an ultra marathon. Just need to find one with good cut offs.

Just here looking for inspiration and motivation as I'm on my own "first 100 miler" journey, except I've chosen to do a less flat one (Pennine Journey North - 112 miles and 4,300m elevation) and now wondering the wisdom of that 😂 Good luck James, I'll be checking back often for encouragement and tips 😉😎

@@runningchannel didn't get off to the best of starts in the new year with a nasty flu bug but since then it's ramping up to the point where it makes me realise I need a lot more hills in my legs and a lot more "time on feet" but it's going well right now. That said, any edge I can gain from others is invaluable 😉

    39 marathons 😨😨 that’s incredible! !!
I’ve never done even 1 😁…although I do exercise and run 20 milers consistently….may eventually do a 50 miler some day (no marathons) and perhaps a 100 to follow it…will see…

Cheering you on, James! I'm training for my first ultra (52km), and have also recently done a training race. One feels safer when the organisers make sure I check in. Do you train to carry all your kit or do you train with a lighter load?
