That’s what’s awesome about the modern day. The reality tv shows are only for the big dogs not the sled pulling dogs doing the real work now everyone can buy a drone a camera and a computer and make really good videos I completely agree
I love all of these videos, it's such a great glimpse into the nautical traditions that have been a part of my homeland for hundreds of years. Today's video was an incredible example of the mind boggling number of fish a small crew can haul in a single day. I'm glad efforts are being made to find a balance between technology, market forces, and ecology so that these traditions can continue for hundreds of years to come.
That was fascinating! I know it's just a days work for you, but I've lived my life in Tornado Alley. I've never seen thousands of fish like that! You scaling the edges of the boats and jumping into the skiff! You made that look like you're stepping off the sidewalk into the grass. I can tell: you spent your childhood in boats and now you navigate the boats like we navigate a sidewalk. I also greatly appreciate you explaining the legal/politics of the delicate balance of preserving the sea creatures for the future, vs sustaining the lives of those who fish them for our consumption. Thanks for all the hard work, in the edit room, to share your fishing life with us.
Northern cod were once so prolific in alomg the Grand Banks off Newfoundland that European sailors claimed that schools of fish could bring their ships to a dead halt and that they could just drop a bucket on a rope from the deck and when they hayled iflt back up it would overflowimg with fish. Sadly, they were fished to near extinction and in 1992 the government shut down the fishery. At the time, the ban was expected to last two years - more than 30 years later it is still closed (except for a very small commercial fishery) and the cod half not returned.
@@dannyboyNS752 As I said, it is a delicate balance in feeding humans, and protecting the sea creatures. After 30 years, there is something else preventing the fish from returning, and if they aren't looking at that, they're no better than those who fish indiscrimantly. They are not trying to address the problem, or Trudy thinks the carbon tax will fix everything.

10:00 - I wouldn't be surprised but some combo of warmer waters and depleted food for them pushed them into maine. I live in Florida and watch various weather charts in the summer including surface temps, typically it's not until august that the ocean 86 degrees but this year and last it's made it to 90 by the end of June. Say what you want about global warming, but in the 10 years I've followed this data it's the first time I've seen it get that hot and stay that hot, it's no longer 2 months at 30c its now 4 months at 32. Definitely warmer.
Years ago, we could get mini barrels of fresh herring in local supermarkets. Mom made her own jarred herring. Why don't you marinate and eat the herring since you already catch them for bait? It's great in wine or sour cream sauce. 'Viking' makes a great jar.
Pogies are fished down here in the gulf pretty regular. They are used for fertilizer, pet food, and fish oil supplements. It's a smelly operation. Also the main bait for crab fishermen. Good to see they have made it that far up and becoming of use to you. Maybe you could get some pointers from the pogies factories down south but looks like you got it figured out. Good video.
Jacob every state that has commercial fishermen makes it difficult for them 2 make a living. I’m glad that u and your dad can catch your own bait for lobster fishing.
That was some smooth boat transfer looked almost fake it was so smooth. It’s really nice you can catch your own bait and put some up for later or to sell. Helps you a ton I’m sure!!!
Very nice solid chunky herring, .it may not be free bait by the time fuel and your time etc are factored in , but it’s a lot more fun then buying bait, plus smoked herring are delicious 😊
Wow Jacob. You create so much camaraderie and and community on that boat. Somehow I just watched the entire video and wouldn’t have if you didn’t put out such story telling content that made this something I’d click on. Then kept my attention for the whole video. Didn’t think bait catching was that interesting 😂. Kudos to you !!!
I could have sworn there were pogies in Frenchman Bay back in the late 80’s - early 90’s. I remember large purse seine boats circling in and a larger boat vacuuming fish out of the nets. They were directed by airplanes flying over head. We were told they were pogies and would be used for fish meal. After that I didn’t see any large schools of small fish for decades, its only in the last 5+ years or so that I started seeing schools of fish again. I’m glad they are back in large enough schools that you can use them.
12:00 - I'd say count your blessings. Here in Florida the fishing has absolutely died because we have a you find it you catch it policy, no limits, and most of the things that were caught here are nowhere to be found. I don't recall the percentage but it's over 50% of the fisherman that earned a living from Florida waters 10 years ago no longer fish because there's just nothing to catch. Between that and MOSAIC lobbyists dumping water into inland swamps from their fertilizer stations and the farmers who farm next to marsh and swamp using it as well the nitrogen spike flows out to see causing algae blooms. A huge algae bloom killed all the ocean floor plant life something like 2 to 4 miles out, just nothing but sand now. Bad for erosion, bad for fisherman, bad for the economy... all because we couldn't regulate.
What part of Florida? The Southeast coast certainly doesn't have those issues but I know parts of the Gulf up by Orlando have had issues with algae blooms.
Love the information! We know you're not just out there "doing stuff", and that there are rules and regulations you need to follow. I appreciate knowing some of what you need to follow.
In the mid seventies I used to go fishing for Bluefish in the Back River which flowed by Maine Yankee. We would look for Pogees rising to the surface and jumping out of the water, trying to get away from the Bluefish. We would use a 10” solid plastic Rebel lure. The Bluefish would sometimes bite the lures in half. The family business was contracted with the State to build the new bridge for Route 144 above the river and remove the existing causeway that was restricting the tide flow by the plant. It is my understanding that you fish further downeast. It might be that the degree or two caused by cooling the Nuclear Power Plant might have drawn the Pogees up river. And the Pogees were there in the drawing the Blefish, but there were Pogees in the Back River near Wiscassit in the seventies. Scott
Jacob is there any potential for Asian Carp to be used as bait? I know they are a freshwater fish but if we could find a use for them as a bait fish, we could really help reduce their numbers in the Mississippi. I bet you could get tons of them for very cheap. Thanks for all the great videos.

I love your videos! Thank you for all of the fun, learning, and laughter!! ❤
Fantastic! That's gotta help with the expenses.
Look at all those future snacks! 🤪
I’m glad they are back in large enough schools that you can use them.
a true blessing - Pogys have been in years back; you only have to find the old fish mills to figure out where and when...
Nice man I fish in Nova Scotia LFA 34 and we just started using pogies for bait the last couple years
OOh, early to a video, excited to watch it!
@@JeffreySmith-m3y I live in Tampa, so yes, the algae blooms (among other issues).
Great video! I learned a lot about Herring and Pogie fishing. That is terrible that the fisheries are not being supported.
What a world you live and work in! Blessings to everyone and the family.
You're success's cheer me up. Congrats.
Just love watching you all. It makes my day!
Absolutely fascinating look inside the purse seine process, thanks for sharing!!
Love the information! We know you're not just out there "doing stuff", and that there are rules and regulations you need to follow. I appreciate knowing some of what you need to follow.
I Love watching you guys! Thanks for making these videos!
That’s honest work boys, i envy you guys. Thanks for showing us old salts how it’s done today.
the lobster mafia is cheering for you gotta keep those snacks coming 😂.
It might be that the degree or two caused by cooling the Nuclear Power Plant might have drawn the Pogees
up river. And the Pogees were there in the drawing the Blefish, but there were Pogees in the Back River near Wiscassit in the seventies.

WOW! I had no idea that's how you got your bait. You can't say a lobsterman doesn't work hard as hell for his catch.
Jacob is there any potential for Asian Carp to be used as bait? I know they are a freshwater fish but if we could find a use for them as a bait fish, we could really help reduce their numbers in the Mississippi. I bet you could get tons of them for very cheap. Thanks for all the great videos.
You guys are doing very well we commercial fished for years pulling nets in by hand on top boats silvers one day I set we cought 3 1/2 ton
Love this guy, a real American hero family!
This video reminds me of my dad, but you're on a much larger scale ... Sooo cool!!! Yah!!! ... 😊
... Per dad, size doesn't matter!!!; ..., It's all about being on the big water ... in nature ...lovely, educational, Thank You ❤.
