    Magnets are made from a material like an iron powder compressed into the desired shape and chrome plated for protection, Once that chrome plating deteriorate the magnet materials starts to crumble, The best way is to remove the magnet and glue in a new one that has the same shape.

      Thank you, that makes sense.

    Neodymium magnets are plated with nickel iirc to protect the pretty fragile ceramic like magnet inside and prevent oxidation. The problem is old magnets always seem to have this issue with the plating disintigrating and the magnet inside powderizing.

      Thanks. Someone else said similar and I was checking Wikipedia earlier, and I agree with you, that's exactly what seems to be happening. Thanks.
      PS, I'm part way through your Switch Lite repair. Getting inspired for my vintage calculator repair, but the disassembly and soldering are putting me off. Must be brave 🙂

    I really like those Sharp MiniDiscs I didn’t know Sharp had branded discs. Cool color….

      I really like them too. I have a feeling they're re-badged Maxells, but I have no evidence.

    You spent so much time and energy on a "useful" device that does nothing. I have never used such a device. I had 2 or 3 minidiscs in my collection with some dirt from the previous owner and I cleaned them by hand with a cotton swab. But thank you for sharing this and reminding us to never use such a device. Thank you for the effort.

    Disintegrating (old) neodynium magnet, have seen this before in a speaker, it was even worse, it started to crumple.

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't know it was neodymium, nor that they disintegrate. That explains it, thanks.

    In all the years I've used a mini-disc, I have never cleaned the media. Ever! Using a device to clean a mini-disc, is like buying a device to clean your floppy disks. IMO

      I agree. It's the first MD cleaner I've seen in four years of searching eBay for MD stuff. I can only conclude that this product was a complete flop and didn't sell many, or people bought them, realised they were useless, and threw them away.

    Is it possible that the sponge ring should be the other way around, so the sponge part upwards?

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question, so I checked the instructions and it says to put the fluid on the pad, not the sponge. Thanks anyway.

    It looks like a chrome coating the magnet had when it was new.

    This “cleaner” is the perfect way to destroy your mini discs.

  • @fuzzybobbles

    Must be dirt on that felt pad as you can see fine circular scratches on the disc surface as you took it out of the cleaner. Looks like it's doing more harm than good. If I get a dirty disc I use a foam cotton bud (q-tip) dipped in IPA and carefully clean the disc surface by hand.

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. I won't be using it again. I've never had a disc that was dirty, despite buying over 200 used ones I think.

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  ปีที่แล้ว

      PS, I agree, cotton bud and IPA works best. However, I shot a video yesterday for a 50+ bundle MD haul, and the J-card on one disc instructed not to use cotton buds and fluid. It also suggested keeping them away from magnetic fields, so either they didn't know what they were talking about, or we don't 🙂

      I have never had a really clean cleaning fluid until now. Maybe liquids for gas chromatography are really clean. All this stuff you can buy leaves a residue after it evaporates.

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dorfschmidt4833 99.9% IPA is supposed to leave no residue (I think), but if the thing you're trying to remove with IPA isn't taken off the surface with the IPA, then I assume that once the IPA evaporates it leaves a film of whatever it is you're trying to clean off.

    Can you somehow make another one of those foam pad things to insert inside?

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  ปีที่แล้ว

      I suppose I could, or keep the foam part and attach a new felt pad, but I've never needed to clean a disc so I don't think I'll bother.

      Sorry for the delay in replying. The IPA is Isoclene. If you look in the description box of this video, I have added an Amazon link to it. I've used it for years and it lasts for ages.

    From my own experience, I can tell you that there is no easy way to clean minidiscs! Any machinery that touches the bottom of the minidisk is not ok, because it will leave fine scratch marks. I use an air jet pump that blows all the lint that collects on the minidisc and inside the shell. The device must also be blown from time to time, because eventually the fluff from the device will end up in minidiscs. A mini vacuum cleaner can be used.

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've still never had a Minidisc that needed cleaning, but yes an air blower would work I suppose. The players do, as you say, collect a lot of dust and lint. Thanks.

    It's a cheap Chinese, degrading neodymium magnet

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think you're right. I didn't realise they degrade.
