Picked up a faulty MZ-N1 and this video really helped me through the process of disassembling it, hopefully I shall be transplanting a laser from another player to get this going, thanks so much :)
@@sjm4306 Just finished putting it all back together. Used a laser from an NZ-MF610 which had a faulty motherboard and fortunately the laser was an identical model to go in the N1. I am happy to confirm it now plays discs perfectly again (so far) and I was even able to record some tracks on there via Net MD which previously never worked properly, the laser would just struggle to read/write to the disc and just give up. The only trouble I did have is with the split pin on top of the gear that is connected to the worm gear - that was a real PITA to remove, I thought it wouldn't go back on again because of how much I mangled it but it seems to have gone on okay and hasn't popped off yet! I just stripped down my MZ-E90 to fix corroded battery terminals that are in the inside and a bit of a pig to get to. I did it and now it's working with the gumstick. The E90 looks to be a bit simpler than your one here. While it was open I put a small amount of vasaline on on the gears. I have seen another youtube clip of broken gears, so hoping this will give some more longevity.
Beautiful video! i have a md player same this video but with failed optical unit. Where i can buy a optical unit for MZ-N707 (optical unit name: LCX-5R)? Somebody knows? Thanks!
I'm definitely up for that if any of my players develop problems. I'm mostly out of buying more md portables though at this point as prices are getting up there even for really poor condition units.
Great video. I have the same MZ-R900 model in the same red color that I bought in USA brand new in 2000/2001. The first Sony MDLP portable recorder. The same original gum stick Sony Stamina battery after 20 years still keeps the charge, the quality of those devices are top-notch. My only issue is after many years unused the REC button doesn't work, so I don't know if the contacts are dirty, so when slide it the red led keeps off and I can't put it in recording mode. Do you have any idea about this issue? I read that ribbon cable connector can become dirty and the buttons work by using a resistor ladder that are readed by an ADC.The circuit is very sensitive to dirty or grease varying the ohms resistance, affecting the read and recognize the right command. Then is very frequent press a button and be wrongly interpreted as another command.
I'm changing the internal battery of my MD-Z10, it's my first minidisc. It works perfectly but when I turn it on the gears apparently make a lot of noise (scratches), is this normal or can it be softened? Thanks from Seoul.
It could probably use a good cleaning. The grease on the mechanical bits tends to attract dust and gunk which could be increasing friction and causing things to scrape.

The laser mech seems to be running straight into the disc surface when it reads and scratching the disc surface although it still does work. Is there a way to adjust the lens distance/focus so it stays away from the disc surface, or does the whole laser module need to be replaced?
Never seen that before, usually the laser sled is far enough away that there's no risk of touching the disc surface. I'd check for what part of the laser sled is touching and see if something got loose and stuck to the the sled, that's all I can think of.
Great great great video! Any chance you have troubleshooting tips for no power on these? Soldered a couple of leads to the pcb pads and nothing using my psu.
sjm4306 Thank you again for your generous and prompt advice. My MZR90 that has been in a removal carton for 15 years works perfectly but sounds like a blender when it seeks. I’m hoping it’s just the transport rails.
To be fair my r90 needed to be relubed too when I got it a few years ago but even after that though it was a bit quieter it was still much louder than my other md portables. I think the design was just mechanically louder than later models.
Yeah unfortunately. Also a warning, make super sure the lubricant you use on the plastic gears is compatible with plastics (ie not petroleum based) otherwise the gears can melt/shatter due to a chemical reaction.
That's odd, so it doesn't even give an error message? Also how long does it take to shut off? A quick thing you can test is if you open the disc lid and carefully move the laser sled to the end and shut it/turn it on does the player move the laser back to the center. If not then it may be the rails need to be lubricated. A stuck laser sled is a common cause for units that wont recognize/play discs (and for some reason may be causing yours to shut off).
