    Hi ... not sure if this is still being monitored, but I had a K2 Home pressure washer. It was 15 months old - well taken care of and used about 2 dozen times during this period. Stored in garage with water drained from the system and hoses.
    The last time I used it ... I washed 2 cars, and took a short break 5 - 10 mins before attempting to use it again. Whilst it was sitting idle it was powered on at the switch but with hose pipe turned down to about 50% of mains full pressure. When I returned a short while later and getting ready to use it again I turned the mains tap back up to full pressure. I then noticed intermittent humming and what appeared to be 'smoke' coming out of the unit. I took the lance and jetted some water through which seemed to be working okay, but the 'smoke' returned after I stopped the jet. At this point I decided to turn the unit off, and then wanted to unplug the cold water supply ASAP thinking water and electricity don't mix to well.
    When the hose was unplugged scolding hot water shot out of the cold water inlet - and what appeared to be more water than what would normally appear when unplugging the hose.
    I have had the unit checked - and the verdict is that there is no fault with the unit at all.
    In your view, what could have caused the water to get so hot even though the unit was sitting idle. Surely if the power switch is on and the trigger is unpressed then there is no electricity running through the motor windings and therefore no heat is being generated as a byproduct of electrical to mechanical energy.
    I have seen references to pump bypassing - is this something on this model - and in this mode what is taking place? If bypassing is taking place then I understand that a thermal protection device (valve) should be fitted at least for safety reasons.
    You thoughts are appreciated.
    Thanks.
    J

      Hi Jay, nice info for us to work from. OK lets break this down, reducing the tap flow will only reduce the pipe pressure when operating the machine, when stopped the pressure will equalise to full main water pressure. Humming when not running and heat from water indicate the motor must have had some power as the pump does not produce measurable heat and will be cooled by the water. The smoke may be from the switch arcing or the motor so check both.

    Hi, Very nice understandable video !!! I have a problem with my Karcher 3.55, It has given great service, but while using it yesterday, and after stopping it for awhile, it refused to start...just makes a buzzing noise, and when I was disconnecting the water hose, a jet of very hot water sprayed out of the machine from the input connection. it was really hot. Is the motor "cooked" ??? Any advice appreciated.
    Thanks Jim.

      @@eSpares thank's for your reply, I was very surprised myself, as it's a cold water power washer,,,,it does not have heating capacity. So must be something radically wrong with the internals....I pressed the snap-on connector to release the hose, and WHOOSH, scalding hot water gushed out. Will strip it down and see what I can find. It has never been otherwise than a perfect power washer up to this. Thanks again, for your help. Best Regards, Jim.

    Hi, found your video/s useful and although my Karcher is slightly different (K4 Premium Ecologic), managed to apply it to mine. My problem was that it seemed dead, not running at all when turned on (had it a couple of years, but not had much use from it). Stripped it down and did checks you suggest - but not sure about last motor bit. But have found that it runs with a quick turn on turn off of the switch with the little cylinder head and piston assembly removed (ball race / cam mechanism exposed, but all electrics sealed and safe). Starting to reassemble and partially tightened down doesn’t run again. Loosen off to about 3/4 way and it runs again! Any tips or ideas as to what’s going on? Cheers

    So if resistance between both neutral and live across the switch, AND the resistance across the motor terminals are all 7.5, what does that mean? The only ones that are low resistance in my non-functioning motor are the live and neutral wires from the plug to the switch.

      Hi Wake up People, the switch is a micro switch that makes and breaks the contacts inside when the trigger is released, if it has gone faulty it should be replaced.

    Your video gave me the confidence to check the machine using a multi meter (bought one ,so useful as you showed).It would be helpful if the video expanded on how to check the switch and capacitor and motor(what the readings should be when healthy) using the multi meter. My K2 compact suddenly stopped, electrically dead ,no inital kick,no pressure,water flows through machine and lances .Any idea what it could be.I have checked and i think it may be capacitor .

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi William, the easiest way is going through the circuit as shown in the video, you would expect a low resistance reading from the live to the motor, neutral to the motor. The switch you should get nothing across the terminal when off and a reading when on, the capacitor should be tested on a high ohms range and expect it to start at zero and move up but normally there is signs of damage.

    • @williammaxwell7600
      @williammaxwell7600 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for replying .The meter reading across motor +/- to switch +/- is 8 Ohms each.The capacitor terminal (brown +black) to terminal with two black(over capacitor) gives 7-8 Ohms.I have a multi meter which shows open circuit when checking capacitance .The switch checks out giving 0.2 Ohms when on +/-.Everything checks out apart from the capacitor ,i am confused as to why my multi meter is giving a resistance yet no capacitance value.

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi William, it sounds like everything else checks out OK so it is likely the capacitor if you have no reading through the capacitor.

      Hi Joel, have you have traced through the circuit as shown in the video? if you have an open reading across live& neutral you need to test each individual circuit but if you have nothing through the motor it does suggest the motor is faulty.

      There are two switches so if the problem was one being a little lazy and sticking the machine should still stop. Disconnect and open the machine then remove the switches as shown here: th-cam.com/video/cEGv7s8aqpM/w-d-xo.htmlm51s then check if they are sticking when manually operated.
      If the switches look ok suspect the piston on the cylinder head that operates the switches may be sticking.

    i have an older Karcger 320M

    What could be the issue?

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The switch on most Karcher's works with the knob and the 'spill valve' that turns the appliance off even when turned on if the water is stopped by the gun. Check If this does not happen when you have connected the machine to both water and electricity and used until the air has been purged.
      Then check the switches are not corroded or stuck.

      That switch does not operate properly. i took it apart, cleaned it, reinstalled and the pressure washer worked perfect. but after 10 mins of using it, it went back to the constantly on state again.
      so i think its safe to say i need to replace that switch!
      I believe it shorts out internally and does not interupt the current to the pump when the unloader valve kicks out.
      Thanks for your help.

    • @eSpares

      If the machine does not hold pressure it will not auto stop. A damaged gasket will cause a leak and loose the pressure. If replacing the switch order a new gasket as well.

    • @coryoconnor4795

      eSpares I ended up just buying a new GFCI plug because my old one was cracked and it’s possible that it sustained water damage to the inside. I looked everywhere for a fuse on the inside and went thru the owners manual and couldn’t find any Info on checking the fuse in there. On your video it seemed to me the fuse was very easy to locate on the Home lite. Either way the plug head was cheap enough so hopefully this will solve the issue! If not I might have to run a few multimeter tests like in this video.. so do you set it to like OHMs 20k on the meter to get accurate reading since your measuring resistance?

      Hi Richard, The problem is likely to be one of a couple of reasons. If water has got on the electrics it may have resulted in a partial short hence smoke. More likely is the motor capacitor has failed and requires replacing, for more information see this video:

    HI i have a K855 hs 240v washer on the wires for this motor i have 2 x white 1 x Yellow 1 x Black do you no what way it goes with the capacitor im lost on this one.

      Not sure of the colours Paul but the motor on your machine is an induction motor. After the switch there are two winding that connect to one side of the power cord (Neutral) and the live goes to the one of the other wires and then through the capacitor to the other wire.

      Hi Jarrod, test the switch first before checking the motor and use the methods shown in the video.

      The cylinder head does crack if allowed to freeze. If this is the case it will need replacing.

    Also my multimeter doesn't show any resistance on any plugs it's set at 200.... and on the right settings

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Frazzle, if you are testing components make sure you touch the leads together to test them, you should get a resistance through them.

      @@eSpares when your testing the plug you say because it hasn't changed it indicates a break in the circuit but my multimeter works fine and you never get a ready from the neutral and live. I don't know why

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      When Mat tests the pressure washer circuit on the live and neutral pins and you don't get a reading it indicates there is a fault somewhere in that circuit, so if you do the same test what do you get?

    • @frazzle657
      @frazzle657 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@eSpares no reading indicating a very high resistance... but that's the same of every plug I've tried lol

      OK let's start at the beginning what is wrong and what have components have you tested.

    Where's the capacitor?

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi dacads, the capacitor on the K5 is located inside and usually fitted to the side of the motor.
