  • Many RV's are keyed the same. Change your locks to RVLock keyless entry and tumbler storage door locks so RV owners can't unlock your RV with their keys.

My RV keys probably unlock your RV's storage bay doors and possibly even its front door. That's right, much of the RV industry uses the exact same key - code CH751 - for storage bay doors. It is also my understanding that the front door locks aren't as uniquely coded as we would all hope.
In an effort to increase the security of my travel trailer I changed my RV locks by installing a new front door keyless entry handle by RVLock as well as new storage bay door tumbler locks. This severely reduces the chance that another RVer can unlock our RV locks merely using their keys.

Nice video! Let's be honest the RV manufacturers shouldn't be using the same key lock on all RVs. It's unacceptable and consumers shouldn't have to pay hundreds of dollars to fix this design flaw from the factory.

    • @FateUnbound
      @FateUnbound  5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Agreed, it's pretty ridiculous that this same key is reused on most brands across multiple manufacturers. They don't care though, it's all about keeping production costs as low as possible.

And simplified access for dealer staff in sales, delivery prep, and service. CH751 was one of several common keys when I was an RV tech 25 years ago. It's good that you changed your locks to different keys and locks on both sides of the hatch.

@@FateUnbound I'm sure keeping cost down is the reason. I use to be a school bus driver & learned that 1 key worked in all the buses.

Nice upgrade. Just remember that door can be pried open in a second with a long pry bar. I'd hookup magnetic sensors to all windows, doors, hatches, wheels ect. Then, hook those to at least two ungodly loud hidden sirens so they couldn't easily pinpoint the source of sound. Activate the system for when you leave. Thieves hate noise and light.

I just replaced my RV lock with one of these as well. Like the convenience and it allows me, as well as to allow others into my RV in the case I am delayed getting back, or of there is an emergency, so my pets can be let out. The beep the unit makes is pretty annoying though, but RVlock allows for a silent mode....just hold the #1 key down until the unit beeps. No more loud beep every time you lock/unlock the door.

Very good advice; I'm always aware and cautious, even securing outdoor chairs with cable lock if not stored into the trailer!
Adding 2 more locks on upper and lower sides of the main door might also be a good upgrade.

Because of the many keys alike and just plain bad people out there ( only a few) I installed i- bolts in the floor near the doors and use quick open Ratchett straps from the i-bolts to the holes in the door handles to secure them at night ( hidden sissors near, just in case)! I also have always thought a center lock with bars ⬅️ 🔑 ➡️ on the back to lock the cargo doors on both sides!

When you lock the door, can you pull the door latch without it being stopped by the lock (neutral) or the door latch stops halfway because the lock is stopping it? Neutral is important because the locking mechanism cannot be damage if someone puts torque on the door latch while it is locked.

But isn't true that their keys are also duplicated to one extent or another. Do you know if it is 1 out of 10? I never worry about it, honest people are not going to break in to your trailer even with the same key. Dishonest people are going to take a rock, screw driver or hammer and bust a window or just punch through those flimsy doors including the entry door. Travel trailers just take a little more effort to get in than a tent even with the best locks.

The upper key is a 'master' key so dealers only need 1 key to unlock units on the lot.

It looked like you would have had the same issue as I did for the baggage compartment where the locks were too deep. How did you fix that?
Since I left the handles on one side mine still close tight with the handle but are secured with the shared key lock but yours probably have a lot of play.
Also, I have the opposite problem with my outdoor kitchen where the shaft of the lock is deep enough and right now I do not have any security on that because of it (the old key broke off in one of the locks after I had ordered these locks and before the new ones arrived which made this a fun process). I contacted RV Lock for both these issues but they could not even provide any reccomendations let alone adapter parts.
Also, while I did get enough locks to do the main doors of my unit and one lock on each of the compartments, it is unlikely that I would be able to do the dual lock because they will only produce the key for a limited time and reportedly by them these are not servicable by a locksmith. If that had not been the case, I might have moved one of the two electronic locks I got to a second trailer I have and bought new passaive locks (one for each trailer) and baggage compartment locks for it as well.
Also, I am not sure if I did not get something tight enough or something, but mine did not like winter weather and not only iced up a couple of times but the electronics stopped workimg until it warmed up (I thought I just needed to change the batteries but that turned out not to be the case which was good as I have owned these for less than six months).
All that being said, I do like the product but still have some challenges to work through.

I like the one key concept. The door lock looks to be battery powered. Is it rechargeable or does it need to be replaced, and if so, what kind of battery is it and how long is the life? I am inclined to keep things simple and stay with a mechanical only door lock. Thanks for this well done review.

They are double or tripple A batteries (I actually think they are double A but forget and would have to check though that should answer your question). They say that they require alkaline but come with lithium.

So I have 2 new 2019 travel trailers jayco and coachman and was concerned about security. After watching a few vids saying these keys can open other rv door locks I decided to take each set of keys and visit some local rv lots with several different brands... guess what? After trying maybe 20 different doors on 4 or 5 different makes I was able to work zero of the locks. I tried storage hatches and keys also and struck out. All my keys have different numbers on them not ch751. Looking at my two sets of rv keys I own they are cut very differently. So why is this? Have you tried different rv doors with your keys? I wonder if manufacturers are doing a better job of keying these things differently now. I'm sure eventually I would be able to open someone else's door but I'm feeling okay about the locks I have. A professional thief or evildoer with some tools will get in easily regardless of the lock/key.

On Amazon it says those camlocks cannot be removed in the unlocked position... so installing 2 would require 2 keys to unlock. Is this the case for you?

The new tumbler locks I purchased have gaskets but my factory ones dont. So I don't think it's that big of a deal

One locks the handle and the other is a deadbolt lock. Much like the setup on a house door.
