Heyyy lovelies, in this video I am finally tackling our kitchen worktops. These worktops are Oak wooden worktops and have been neglected for the past 8 years of living here. This is one of the biggest jobs I had on my to do list. I have been massively putting it off as it is simply a huge undertaking and quite intimidating. After watching many videos - MANY MANY actually lol I put together a list of tools and equipment I would need to get this job done. I have created a list of everything you will need in my Amazon storefront if you would like to get this job done. This link includes the brushes I used and the de nibbing pads as well as the White Spirit I used to wash brushes.

First up I used the BAHCO scraping tools. I had the card and the carbide tool with handles however, I found myself only using the carbide with handle. It was so much easier to hold and control.
I then sanded 80 grit using my random orbital sander. I sanded all of the hard to reach areas by hand.
I hoovered the surface and wiped with a kitchen towel before moving on to 120 grit.
Following the 120 grit I wiped it down and hoovered all debris. I chose the Fiddes hardwax oil after watching several videos on it and it seemed to be an easier application process for me compared to others.
Fiddes hard wax oil recommends using 80 grit and then 150 grit max - I would use 150 grit and follow the instructions. In this video you will see me sanding up to 120.
I applied two coats of the Fiddes hard wax oil. Allowing the first coat to fully dry overnight before applying the second.
I am over the moon that this job has finally been done and I can tick it off my list.
I forgot to mention in the video- but I cleaned the two brushes using White Spirit. This was the recommended way to clean tools after application.

I love this song! Good choice, Claire!
Your work top is really beautiful. You should be really proud of yourself. Even 30 years ago, I would have wimped out and asked my hubby to do it. 😂😂😂 There is no way now that I would tackle that job. Kudos to you!
Thank you so much! Xxx my Hubby is not a DIY kinda hubby 🤣🤣 lucky for me cos I love it 🤣🤣🤣
What an epic project Claire! I loved this! And I wouldn't worry about that stain! Just put a Quality Street tin there to hide it 🤔😂. Honestly, you should be proud! It turned out amazing! 🤩

What a perfectionist and magical woman you are,I can't find enough words to express my thoughts about this video.I mean ,I never saw any woman doing so many things you did, which I can't even imagine.Amazing kitchen makeover, really wonderful 😍😍💜💜
oh Sudha thank you so much xx I am so happy you enjoyed it :) I do enjoy DIY so very much apart from the pain haaaaa xx
@@athomewithclaire and that's why you are so amazing 😍
@sudhagupta4458 ❤️❤️🥰🥰 so are you 🙌🙌 and ypu can do anything you dream of doing 🙌❤️
It looks amazing Claire. You should be so so proud of yourself. In the couple of areas that you're not happy with, just cover it up. You're not going to be leaving the benchtops with absolutely nothing on there so just place something strategically over them. It really does look fantastic.
@karenlloyd1977 thank ypu so much Karen 😍😍 yes I absolutely will find something that looks good there xx
Very well done m'lady! Give yourself some BIG props for this! It's amazing 🤩
thank you so much xxx I am so happy with it - I am also tempted to go back over those irritating areas but I doubt I will haaaaaa
WOW, Claire, absolutely gorgeous!
Thank you so much Stephanie ❤️
Absolutely amazing job Claire, looks fantastic. xx
Thanks so much 😊 xxx
Wow Claire they look amazing... well done you xxxx
Thanks so much 😊
WOW, what a stunning difference, Claire! It's just gorgeous! Looks like golden oak? So clever to hook up the sander to the Hoover! Defo the way to go! I'm so surprised it only took 3 days! You must've worked like a mad woman to get that done so quickly! (used to do woodworking and know how long jobs can take).
A very hot steam iron placed on a folded, really damp COTTON or linen (no other fibers!) cloth *might* have helped lift some of that deep staining...maybe! Just depends on what caused it.
On the stains, if anybody asks, don't apologize. Just say "I chose to leave that to remind me of all the work I did. "
Looks very good. Also, nice glass cutting board will cover area by the stove.
thankyooooooo Gloria xxx yess great idea haa - oh yes I already have glass worktop savers they're great xx
Looks amazing Claire. Well done👏👏👌💕
thankyooooo so much Lynda xx
I always feel so inspired when I watch someone else do a lot of hard work and get a stunning result. Then the urge to do something like that myself pass just as quickly... 😏
thankyou so much my lovely xxx ohh ha ha yeh i do not think I will ever do this again haaaaa
@@athomewithclaire I might actually offer to do this for my mum as my dad can't do it for their kitchen after his stroke. But only because he did it last 4 years ago, the entire surface is about 1/3 of the area you did and he has a proper sander already!
@mizzuzie3338 oh Mizz .. sorry to hear about your Dad ❤️❤️❤️ but absolutely do it ... you'll live it xx ignore all my moaning ... im actually really happy now with the work 🤣😍
Claire, you did a fantastic job. It looks absolutely gorgeous. It makes me want to lose my arborite countertops for wood!
Thank you so much 😍😍😍 ohhhhh goodness ... I thought this video would help put people off getting Wood 🤣🤣🤣
You did an amazing job!! Looks so beautiful!
Wow Claire, this is so beautiful. Do proud of you for completing this project. Lol, definitely something harder. One of the stone counter tops still need sealing once a year. Love the way your counter tops look now. ❤❤
ohhhh Sylvia thank yooo --- wait wait -- theres a stone one that also needs sealing ? ughhh why has the world gotta do us like that haaa I will need to find out what that is and NEVER get it lol
Oh my word what a difference. You did an amazing job. A professional finish ❤️
Thanks so much! 😊❤️❤️❤️❤️
You are such a STUD-ET Claire! 🎉Be safe
🤣🤣 I am the DIY'er in this household - lucky for me .. Tim is happy for me get on with it all 🙌🙌
Every time you have Quality Street you will fondly remember that stain and the pain of removing it 🍫🤣
🤣🤣 you're not wrong ... It did make me want Quality Street though
Well done. What a tremendous effort. Looks AMAZING 🎉

oh thankyoooo xx it was a dream for me too 8 years ago lol hopefully I never need to do this again haaaa
Omg! They look amazing! 🤩. I need you would knock it out of the park! 💜
Thank you so much 🤗
Just saw this and was shocked. The reason being your tile is very similar to mine and I too have a wood counter top. 2 years ago I gutted my kitchen and took the wall down between the kitchen and dining room (non weight bearing wall). I did a butcher block work top with different color wood colors. It came out great very very happy with it wish I could post you a pick. You may want to try next time you refinish the top to see if you can bleach the stain up some. It might not get rid of it but it could make it more tolerable. I painted my kitchen walls a light green. I know you are looking to choose a color IMO I am leaning towards the lightest of them which if I remember is rabbit ? Foot. Anyway you did an OUTSTANDING job.
Well done Claire. Not sure I'd have even attempted it. It looks fab.
Thankyoooooo lovely ❤️❤️ ohhhh honestly that's how I've been feeling since moving in 8 years ago 🤣🤣
Wow looks so good, job well done 👏👏👏👏🤎
Thank you 😋
What a great job Claire!! Watching you do the scraping, I thought 'that's gotta hurt the arms', and then you confirmed it lol Love those carbide scrapers though - seen them on furniture makeover videos and they look fab. SOOOOOOOOO impressed and happy for you with how easily those stains lifted - I thought you were going to have to bleach them or something like that. I hope you're super impressed and proud of yourself for doing it. I agree, you should NEVER EVER do it again 🤣🤣
Ohhh thank yoooo CB yes the scrapers are next level fabulous tools - my arms though - wow I felt like they didnt even belong to me after 3 hours of scraping haaaaa they did the job perfectly xx
Great job. I have a few places on my wood floors that need to be scraped and restained . Thanks for the demonstration of what is ahead of me! Take care, Claire! ❤😊❤
I'm glad it was helpful Deb 😍😍 wow wooden floors that is a commitment 😍😍❤️❤️
@@athomewithclaire yeah it is. Luckily they are only in the downstairs area
@debbrady497 I hope its fun 🤩🤩🤩🤩
Great job!! Totally impressed!!!
Thankyooooooo Roy ❤️❤️🤩🤩
Looks absolutely beautiful!
Thankyooooo ❤️❤️❤️
You did an AMAZING job Claire! I'm soo proud of you!❤❤
Thank you so much Heather ❤️❤️❤️
You inspired me last week to sort out cupboards etc. It's taken me a whole week to do my craft cupboards. Now the kitchen and bedroom 😂❤
Yayyyyy this makes me happy 😍😍😍
What a fab transformation ❤
thank yooo Claire xxxx
Wow looks amazing !!!!! x
thank yoooo so much xxx
That's so much work, but the countertops are gorgeous! Those stains are probably where water sat on the wood where there wasn't any finish. Oak is notorious for turning black when it gets wet.
Thank yooo 😁 yeh totally we were quite negligent and I would often realise too late that something was wet or something had been sitting too long.
Hi Claire well done it turned out amazing 👏 what a difference, it looks beautiful 😍, this is the first time i been able to watch any TH-cam 😂, Rusty is like having a new born baby, i dont have time for anything else 😂 but im loving it 🥰, thanks for sharing ❤❤❤ xxx
thank yooooo lovely xxx I love it :) Awwwww I totally know that feeling haaaaa xx he is utterly adorable xx
@@athomewithclaire 😂, thank you, he's such a wee character already, wild 😜, he doesn't sleep much for 8 weeks 😂, but amazing at toilet training already 🙌 ❤️❤️❤️ xxx
the bench top turned out amazing. the stain near sink wall from a top angle looks like a dogs face. ❤
Love it! You did a great job and should be very proud of yourself! When you tackle it again next year, try oxalic acid on the remaining stains. You will have to apply to the entire surface to get an even color, but if those are water stains, the oxalic acid should take them up in one to two coats.
Thankyou so much lovely 😍 ❤️ I will totally look that up ... but hopefully I won't have to do this again 🤣🤣🙈🙈🙏🙏
Awesome job! 👍❤
thank yoooo OG xxx
Amazing,well done you ❤
Thank you! 😊 xxxx
Wow u go girl u did an amazing job u shou.d be so proud of yourself 😊
Thank yoooooo xx I really am 😍😍
It looks beautiful Claire. You done an amazing job and you should be proud of yourself😊. I absolutely hate sanding...me and sand paper will never be best friends
thank yooooo so much Pam :) same here - I think the most satisfying sand was the 80 grit - just seeing that initial potential of the wood after scraping was very cool :) xxx
I think they look fantastic
Thank yooooo Beth ❤️❤️
The stains can be removed with oxalyc acid after scrqping and sanding. But your worktop looks amazing anyway, just place something on top of the stains and hide them 😂😂😂 I just love it ❤❤❤
Ohhhhh thank you Lilian 😍😍❤️❤️ I should have googled this beforehand 🙈🙈❤️
well done, looks super
thankyooooo Nini :) xxx
Very nice job!!! We need to redo our island, which is cherry butcher block.
Ohhhh Barbara that sounds beautiful 😍 🤩
Wow Claire, that is one heck of a transformation. It looks phenomenal 🤩
thankyou so much Mary xxx
I would have used bleach to clean the whole top it might have helped with the stains. Rinse off with water and wax it when dry.
Looks great though Claire ❤
Bleach ? oh goodness no I would never use bleach on wood - so happy you like the look of it :)
Next time (ouch, sorry) but if you ever do this again, try an oxalic acid treatment on those stains. It might take them right out. But really, it all looks so beautiful and I am sure you will totally enjoy your countertop.
Thankyoooooo Valerie 🤩🤩 I am keeping everything crossed that we will have moved before these need doing again haaaaa although if might spruce them up if needed ... to make it pretty for potential buyers 🙏🙏
great job dont think id have the patience lol. but does look amazing x
thank yooo Steph - yeh patience is why I havent even done it for 8 years haaaaaa glad I finally did
wowwwww😍 waiting for you to come over,......😂
thankyooooo Yvonne xxx
You could have called your floor guy maybe about the crack in the counter.... Just a thought 💭... BTW, when are you getting those finished/fixed in the kitchen?
heyyyyyyy Kera - The flooring guy just told me to contact them in January when I am ready for them to be fixed. I will do that as soon as I am ready :) lol I wanted to get a bit organised first as the new units will all have to be emptied and moved again but luckily we can just move them in to the living room
So what happened to George in your intro? 1:42 Couldn't believe you were alone, I was missing him 🥰
lol Kera :)
WOW!!!!!
thankyoooooo xx
That is truly the work of champions but you pulled it off, especially after that 1st day which I literally thought you will quit 😂😂😂. It turned out beautifully even with the stubborn stains bc it gives it a little bit of character & George was such a trooper, he did awesome too. 😊🩵🧸🎉
Thank yoooooo Jackie 🤩🤩 yeh I was in total agony after all that scraping 🤣🤣 but I'm so glad I stuck with it - it's only been a few days since I fibushednit but we are both still being grown ups and not just dumping on it 🤣🤣
