Heyyyy lovelies, in today's video I am bringing you with me because I need you here and I would love to hear your advice - We are heading to the garden centre to look at shade loving plants and partial shade loving plants. One 5th of my garden is in complete shade 365 days a year. We have an East facing garden ( who knew ay ) something to look out for when we move. I am heading to the garden centre with a list of all of your suggestions and looking at the plants I find.

What a great day at the garden center. Leave them in pots and you will be able to move them around as you wish. ❤❤

Claire, I would put them in pots. Then you can move them around, bring them in if the weather is bad, and yes, take them with you when you move.

Absolutely take pots and whatever plants from the garden you want!! As long as you tell them that's what your doing it's fine.

Claire, put them into slightly larger pot, and they will do well. Keep them watered and next year pot them up into larger pots again. Do this every year or so to stop them becoming root bound. If you put them into the ground then you have to leave them when you move, unless the buyer agrees to let you take them.

If you keep your plants in pots, watch out for vine weevils. Google for when and how to treat the compost. Good luck!

I love a good shade garden. I live in very hot California, and they don't do well where I live. So I made a terrarium. 😂
Pots always go to the new home. We moved my mom's half wine barrel planters. That was a chore.

The marmalade one is gorgeous. I would definitely get one more of those and also put them in pots. Improve their chance of survival, I think. Looking lovely.... ❤

Very nice choices, Claire! I would definitely get another large fern and another marmalade for the other end. I'm really torn about the planting vs. potting dilemma though. Been there/done that! Plants thrive much better being in good soil, where they can stretch, breathe (yes!), and grow a good root system. They survive harsh weather better when in plenty of soil. Obtain a good weather shield (plastic with micro-holes for oxygen) for them to drape over them if you're expecting very cold temps. Drape old towels around the bases for the Winter, too.
If you can get it, Spray 'N' Grow is a micro-nutrient liquid (tiny amount in warm-ish tap water, used within 1 hour), hand-sprayed on the underside of leaves, that does wonders for all plants, from grass to trees, veggies to flowers...even cactus and succulents. I've used it for 30 years...great stuff!

I love potted plants and they almost all moved with me last time I moved house. My beloved massive hosta in a pot had to be left because we couldn't squeeze that one last thing into the van or my car, but all the others came with me. I love pots because you can chose different sizes/shapes, add some annuals into smaller pots in front and change things around if you get bored. Pots all the way for me 😊

Love those plants and the alternating colors! After thinking a bit about pots vs ground I concluded that if in pots you can put them in the shed easily if a snowstorm hits. I can't remember if your shed is insulated, or even heated, but it's a more sheltered place anyway.

I'd keep them potted myself that looks like a pain in the butt to dig into. Potted plants you take with you. A lot of people will take cuttings of their other plants to propogate when they move as well. As long as you disclose whats being taken you are good. Ferns need to be repotted in larger pots pretty quickly they are usually rootbound at purchase time and will grow to the size of their pots and they generally spread and can be split up and repotted yearly.

Claire, I’d completely do pots. It gives you the flexibility to move them around if the mood hits you. I’d get larger pots to give them room to grow. Great choices. Sorry to hear that hostas are bad for George. 😢

I would put them in pots that way you can move around. Yes,take them with you when you move. Just bare in mind that hopefully they won't outgrowth pots. Don't want to overcroud the roots cause that may cause an issue. That is down the road.😊❤

I can't grow anything but if I were trying to I'd put them in pots so if a snow comes you can put them inside. Also yes! Potted plants go with you when you move!
Make sure they are large enough so you don't have to repot them any time soon and they will grow larger. I asked my green thumb friend lol

Claire leave them in the pots. Just have to get bigger pots probably yearly as the plants grow. Also as many have said to can move them around, shelter them in bad weather & take them when you move. Win Win !!

Hi Claire😊 I'd definitely put the shade plants in larger pots. I agree with with @cholman4248!! Also, pick pots that would look good in your house, then you know they'll match anywhere inside. Ferns luv luv bathrooms! And the flowers would look great in the kitchen or entryway. If you want to "plant" something, have you got hostas over there? They love the shade too. They die off in late fall and come back in spring😊

Try to use the biggest pots you can manage to move later on. The roots will need plenty of room to grow. The pots can be pretty, too, to dress of the garden even more. Then they can be sturdy enough to not be knocked over. We have a plant we got in Virginia over a decade ago and it is in a pot and thriving.

If you do keep them in pots, you are going to have to water lots as they will dry out quicker in a pot. if you put in the ground, cos you have weed mat carboard etc. you would need to add in new compost to give the soil a boost. soil covered in weed mat etc that sometimes does not drain properly or dries out, will lose nutrients. but the upside with planting in the ground is the plant can take off growing instead of roots being hindered by a pot. example my mum had a lemon tree in a pot for years , done ok but still did not produce many lemons and did sometimes dry out, she put in the ground and wow now its huge and loads of lemons and looking lush.

I would leave them potted, easier to arrange as you add more plants. I would take them upon moving, after leaving several flower beds behind when I moved, I very much regret not at least taking slips off them.

They will be fine in pots, i would love a jungle garden aswell but they cost so much. I have 3 Fatsia Japonicas which grow very quickly and love the shade. The one you saw was very pricey but you can get smaller ones, i got mine from B&M x

Not mean not cruel Claire put them in pots I did with mine got big pots for each plant they thrived and I rotate them whenever I choose plus you definitely can take them with you if you move by that time they will be much bigger and more expensive to buy PLUS no digging win win 👍👍👍

It is a dilemma, they take more attention in pots, they need to be watered more often and they can get root bound, but on the other hand there’s no planting and if they don’t make it, it’s easier to get rid of them…. Lol I’m from the northern US, but have lived in Florida for a long time, I can’t grow my favorite plants, because it’s too hot for them….😒

Leave them in pots Claire they will thrive in them and then when you move, they can move with you. When plants are in pots they are not classed as an established garden, they are considered ornaments. So, unless you say" the garden along with contents" in your for-sale contract you have no problem taking them when your house is sold.
