It's amazing how much Cold Shoulder varies from person to person, like mine has only slight discoloration, but some of them like this have gone wild! But all makeup, nail, hygiene products have a shelf life once opened, and it's rarely longer than 2, maybe 3 years. They put that on their product because they are probably aware that, after that time frame has passed, the product quality/colour/texture etc may have changed, degraded or just flat out expired. So I'm not surprised to see changes so many years later. Although rarely is the degradation/change so pretty! I'm so pleased things are going well for Christine over at Halo Taco, she was the 1st nail content channel I ever watched on YT, and she deserves all the success possible!❤
I have opi polishes from the 90s that haven’t degraded Mam. I have 1000s of polishes. I keep them in dark cool places that are not humid. Same with perfume.
I didn't know that was a reason why they discontinued it. I own every polish too and all 3 have happened to me. Not as bad as yours though but def is more grey. I actually had to add blue freezie to it to make it look more blue but it's not the same at all.
Oh wow, that’s a smart idea to semi save it! 😅 I think there were a bunch of reasons, like it was one of the worst sellers that year, it was difficult to source the pigments, but I have seen sooo many people complain of these discoloration and formula issues so that combined with HT being unable to source the proper pigments probably just created a perfect spell for discontinuing it 😭😭

I immediately checked my "Cold Shoulder" and sure enough...2 years old and a dark teal. The formula is so amazing, I wore it over and over without even noticing the color change. Knowing they took it as a learning moment makes me want to support Holo Taco more.

That's insane. One of the most unique top coats I use is a Sally's prism nails nail color from almost 25 years ago, it was my moms. Idk how it still looks amazing. It's the shade opal and it's gorgeous

I know this video is about the polish but I have to commend the loop on this video. Looping shorts always drive me crazy because they're not done well, the intonation at the end doesn't match the energy at the start, it's a whole thing. But I think this video might have the best loop I've ever experienced, thank you lol, it's so nice. 👏 👏

To be fair, typically it takes 1.5-2 years until a nail polish expires, in which you could experience thinning, discoloration, deterioration, separation, etc. BUT an unopened bottle can last from 5 to 8 years without issue. There are some polishes that people keep for years and years and they’re mostly fine other than having to add something like nail polish remover to revive the right consistency. How it’s stored and things like temperature also play a role of course. But because the shelf life is typically 2 years you should go 2 years without experiencing any sort of deterioration. So it sounds like cold shoulder behaved like any other opened nail polish depending on when these issues started happening. But holo taco is such a good brand they chose to make adjustments to prevent such a thing from happening again, even though they didn’t technically have to.
They’re saying the issues are happening AFTER the shelf life. Polishes deteriorate whether opened or not. Passed its shelf life is passed it’s shelf life! I’m glad you at least said something in her defence because everyone is bashing it for using it for over three years for some and being disappointed. 🤦🏼♀️

I just checked mine rn because of this short. It does a bit more runny and maybe a tad milky but it is still a nice blue. I'm gonna start using it more so I can use it up before it changes more. RN it still looks vibrant

It recently happened to mine, too. HT said that their polishes are good for 18-24 months, and since I bought mine at launch, it had reached its shelf life. This also happened to my Heavy Metal Mixtape. Every other frosted metal formula I have is still holding up. It makes me weary to purchase frosted metals, which sucks because it's my favorite formula.
remember trying to add copper foil to my nails as a decoration a while back and over time they stained my nails green. i’m guessing the silver foil probably had something to do with the polish’s changes too

Oh my god!! I was looking for my blue foil polish, and I thought I was going crazy cuz all I could find was a greyish green one I didn't rember buying! Thank you for helping me with thia mystery lmao
obviously, and rightfully so, it would be pretty disappointing to buy OR make the polish with the expectation that it will be a strong cobalt blue, and it turning into a murky teal (and obviously the thinning and foil deterioration too,) however, i love the color it became. the murky teal is beautiful! i personally think i like it better than the original polish color, and i see others in the comments who seem to feel similarly 🫶🏻 despite how unfortunate it must have felt and been to Cristine and buyers alike that the formula changed so drastically and unexpectedly, this is probably the best case scenario for any formula by any brand regarding a formula malfunction. it could have been much worse, and i think the fact THIS is the worst malfunction any of her polishes have ever experienced, it says a whole lot about the incredible quality of her polishes! the fact the worst deterioration any of her polishes have ever seen still turned out to be as gorgeous as this is honestly insane
Oooo, the end result is surprisingly pretty! Does this happen to any other colors/formulas? So I'm in the textile industry, but used to work for a small bag company, and it's hard to test for longevity, especially as a small business. There's lightboxes to test UV fading, but we couldn't afford one and had to trust the factory. There's hundreds of test methods to determine how fabric will wear, essentially speeding up the process. Now I'm curious how polish is tested! The pigment could also be degraded by the other ingredients, not sure how you could accelerate that process.
It looks like it doesn’t react to oxidization well. Once the air reaches the Polish, it turns into a greenish color. Hopefully she can fix the formula because it really is a pretty color!

I’ve had some major brands go off way worse, idk why but my OPI like to degrade fast 😂 I live in high elevation, high heat and low humidity so try to keep my polishes in the fridge now and it helps a bit lol
I had to go check mine, I got mine when it launched as well. Mine is actually still the same. Probably because the room my polish is in is a craft room so the door stays closed & the blinds on the window are black so there's not much light in there. That worked out & now I know I should probably keep them in that room lol.

Reminds me of when I dyed my hair, they used "peacock blue" (first time having hair dyed and they didnt have any other color I liked) It went from this dark cobalt blue to a more teal that reminds me of...well a peacock, I find that color change cool! I wonder what causes that polish to change? None of my polishes ever did that ^^

It recently happened to mine, too. HT said that their polishes are good for 18-24 months, and since I bought mine at launch, it had reached its shelf life. This also happened to my Heavy Metal Mixtape. Every other frosted metal formula I have is still holding up. It makes me weary to purchase frosted metals, which sucks because it's my favorite formula.
You just said that it’s passed it’s shelf life! How can you say you’re weary when it’s OVER A YEAR passed it’s shelf life??! That’s NOT her fault!!!!!

remember trying to add copper foil to my nails as a decoration a while back and over time they stained my nails green. i’m guessing the silver foil probably had something to do with the polish’s changes too

obviously, and rightfully so, it would be pretty disappointing to buy OR make the polish with the expectation that it will be a strong cobalt blue, and it turning into a murky teal (and obviously the thinning and foil deterioration too,) however, i love the color it became. the murky teal is beautiful! i personally think i like it better than the original polish color, and i see others in the comments who seem to feel similarly 🫶🏻 despite how unfortunate it must have felt and been to Cristine and buyers alike that the formula changed so drastically and unexpectedly, this is probably the best case scenario for any formula by any brand regarding a formula malfunction. it could have been much worse, and i think the fact THIS is the worst malfunction any of her polishes have ever experienced, it says a whole lot about the incredible quality of her polishes! the fact the worst deterioration any of her polishes have ever seen still turned out to be as gorgeous as this is honestly insane

Oooo, the end result is surprisingly pretty! Does this happen to any other colors/formulas? So I'm in the textile industry, but used to work for a small bag company, and it's hard to test for longevity, especially as a small business. There's lightboxes to test UV fading, but we couldn't afford one and had to trust the factory. There's hundreds of test methods to determine how fabric will wear, essentially speeding up the process.
Now I'm curious how polish is tested! The pigment could also be degraded by the other ingredients, not sure how you could accelerate that process.
It looks like it doesn’t react to oxidization well. Once the air reaches the Polish, it turns into a greenish color. Hopefully she can fix the formula because it really is a pretty color!
I hope one day they can release an updated version that can maintain the original color! 💙💙💙
Omg i literally just finished a mani with and old Cold Shoulder and Crystal Skies bc the new Crystal Skies polish reminded me the the muted vibe if the old Cold Shoulder
I’ve had some major brands go off way worse, idk why but my OPI like to degrade fast 😂 I live in high elevation, high heat and low humidity so try to keep my polishes in the fridge now and it helps a bit lol

I had to go check mine, I got mine when it launched as well. Mine is actually still the same. Probably because the room my polish is in is a craft room so the door stays closed & the blinds on the window are black so there's not much light in there. That worked out & now I know I should probably keep them in that room lol.
Im studying manicure and pedicure right now, kinda because of simply, she inspired me. And ouh my... I love the biology classes but there is a lot to learn in basics, before actually doing nails

Haha it is! I am really really grateful to have been able to receive so many of their polishes in PR. With the frequency of launches nowadays, I would never have been able to afford all the polishes myself, so I am very aware of how lucky and privileged I am to get these polishes in PR or for sponsorships! It’s an honor 🩶
Reminds me of when I dyed my hair, they used "peacock blue" (first time having hair dyed and they didnt have any other color I liked)
It went from this dark cobalt blue to a more teal that reminds me of...well a peacock, I find that color change cool! I wonder what causes that polish to change? None of my polishes ever did that ^^

I've been an HT customer since day one and had no idea that cold shoulder did that's I didn't pick it up - I got cheap champaign and gift receipt only from that collection - and I've never seen a polish do that. Wild
