Why You SUCK At Writing: Fight Scenes

  • What makes a fight compelling is not always the fight itself, but the reason characters are fighting in the first place. However, it's not all about the build up, and sometimes a good fight scene is a result of clever tactics and well made description.

    Agree. This one of the reasons why I love Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee’s fight scenes so much. In my opinion, Bruce’s fighting style is more aggressive than Jackie’s. Jackie often use the his agility to move around his environment and use anything he can find. In some ways, his style fits his personality. Jackie said it himself that he is a pacifist.

    As quick and absolutely dirty as possible. Thats how i do it. Do it fast, do it grimy. I love writing fight scenes, the moment to monent to flow is soo satisfying.

    Solid work dude I didn't notice that your video length shortened back to seven minutes. I know that most of your videos I believe have been about seven minutes. I'm sorry if the longer ones I think those 20 minute ones weren't holding peoples attention. Those were also good Content. I just want you to know.

      lol, they're all holding people's attention. I kinda just write the script with what I wanna say on the topic and leave it there. I don't really like padding out videos so if I don't have anything else to say I just keep it at whatever length it is. If I wanna say more on the matter I'll just make another video lmao.

    2:16 honestly jotaro vs kira for the first time was a great fight scene since we were all begging for Josuke to come or maybe jotaro to get back and beat the shit out of kira after everything
    I say while build up is great for a fight i also say a fight scene can be even better if the people watching want it to happen and go in one obvious way just like how in jjk everyone wants itadori to fight sukuna and beat him up after everything

    I don't know if this is odd to ask, but after seeing several of your videos when it comes to the creative process, ESPECIALLY when it comes to novel writing, this right here feels like you were taking a jab at one of my major weaknesses, in a good way of course.
    I write VERY detailed fight scenes in my series, due to imagining what it would look like once it gets animated. I've been told by some of my readers that they can see the fight happen like a movie in their head due to the way I write it, but I have heard criticism from others that it becomes too much for them. My problem is that I carefully implement exactly what you suggest here, shedding light to tactics, fears, and confidences within the characters' fighting style or trying to counter their opponent. This goes into things like close quarters firefights too for my scenes; the more intimate I can make it, I tend to try and do my best to paint that scene with as much detail as possible, but it seems I am doing myself a GRAVE disservice from the sounds of it.
    I know you have no reason to, but I want to ask if you could read through a fight scene or two of mine, to see what it is I actually would need to cut. And for the fear of losing so much detail, how would you suggest I retain said 'choreography' so that way when my material makes it into other mediums (comics/manga, anime, and video games) it won't be a vague memory on how exactly I wanted that fight to be perceived?

    • @ScritRighter
      @ScritRighter  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Sure I could look over it. Although I would say the main thing you seem to be getting caught up on is that you're not writing for your medium. You're writing for several different mediums at once because you're afraid it won't translate over or you'll forget.
      The simple truth is, books are not manga nor are they animation or video games. And regardless of how you write you fight scenes, those other mediums will always take liberties to properly adapt the fight for those mediums. Focus on the broad strokes of the fight. The big emotions behind it, the turn of tides, and how they use their environment. Put a 'feeling' into the fight scene itself, and adaptions will do what they can to recapture that feeling in their own way.
      I say, don't fear the changes, look forward to them. Allow the book to be the 'rough draft' of the fight for which only a visual medium can truly complete.

      @@ScritRighter I appreciate it! And you are right, which I suppose is why I became aware of this problem in the first place due to previous onlookers and you basically confirmed it for me with this video that it IS a problem. The next step however was never found, as I never came across anyone that specifically spoke about fighting sequences while also being avid anime watchers. Is there anywhere I could possibly reach you to give you the material to look over?

    Can you give an example of simple vs detailed fight?

    • @ScritRighter
      @ScritRighter  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Detail isn't necissarily bad, but any detail should be focused on the internal motivations and strategies in the fight.
      'detailed' fight:
      Bob threw his left fist at Jimmy's nose, but Jimmy ducked to the right and gave him a left knee to the gut instead. Bob doubled over coughing up blood from his stomach as he pulled his fist back and threw it at an upward angle for Jimmy's chin, hitting it with the force of a brick and flinging Jimmy's tooth onto the pavement below.
      DETAILED fight:
      Bob was sick of Jimmy. The bastard always had something smarmy to say, but this time he had gone too far. Bob figured a sucker punch would shut him up, but Jimmy was a quick one. Jimmy weaved, countering with a gut-wrenching knee. Bob could already hear all the shit Jimmy was about to talk. So a swift uppercut snapped his stupid jaw shut instead. He was lucky he only lost a tooth, he'd been hoping to make him bite his tongue off.
      SIMPLE fight:
      Bob swung a haymaker at Jimmy's nose, but Jimmy pulled back, countering with a knee to the gut. Staggered, Bob twisted, knocking Jimmy's head back with an uppercut. A soft clatter as Jimmy's tooth hit the pavement.
      In the 'detailed' fight we are too concerned about 'rights and lefts' and it just bogs down the combat. No one cares if Bob threw his left or right hand in the fight. describing too much direction can get confusing for the reader and it's hard to imagine.
      In the other detailed fight, we get to peer more into the motivations between Bob and Jimmy. Now we've established the motivation behind the fight, and the emotional drama inside Bob's head.
      The simple fight is the bare bones while still giving you just enough to imagine what happened in the fight. Bob swings, misses, gets hit by a knee, bounces back into an uppercut that knocks Jimmy's tooth out. We can see it play out in our heads while we read it, and it's easy to imagine how the fight happens even if everything is not fully described.
