Mind you, I started young, even younger than you folks because my father played Dixieland and swing trumpet professionally. So I heard it, and Latin music, from newborn on, my brother became a jazz drummer, I became a dancer, including swing dancer, and an Afro-Latin percussionist. I adapted some of my instruments to swing and blues and played in jazz and Latin bands for years, AND I STILL CAN'T GET ENOUGH GOOD SWING MUSIC (or good salsa, for that matter), and VERY HAPPILY SO. It'll keep you young (I dance high-end salsa literally to this day, for lack of much happening around me in uptempo swing). It will all keep you energized, it'll keep you enjoying life and otherwise pay you enormous benefits, SO KEEP IT UP!!! But know, my friends, that bands can be a demanding labour of love at times so when it's an uphill task keeping it all together, know that that is just part of the swing musician life sometimes. Keep up the splendid cooking and good luck! You do something VERY IMIPORTANT for society by keeping the spirit of swing music and dance alive because the joy and spontaneity of it is, among other things, healing for people.
A great song with quite a history. Originally a Yiddish song "Bei Mir Bistu Shein" (to me you're beautiful). The name changed to "Bay Mir Bistu Sheyn" when used in a musical in 1932. The name changed again to the German flavor with the Andrews Sisters 1937 hit and now known as "Bei mir bist du schön" as in the video title. It's really a Yiddish folk song that works very well in a jazz environment.
Nothing changed. Yiddish is written in the Hebrew script, so any transliteration into the Latin alphabet is not the REAL name, but an approximation. "Bei Mir Bistu Shein" is an accurate transliteration, as it accurately conveys the pronunciation of the Yiddish. "Bay Mir Bistu Sheyn" is simply the sort of mistake you would expect from an American who can't speak Yiddish. "Bei mir bist du schön" is just wrong: it's German, not Yiddish, and the pronunciation of the last word is totally different. What MATTERS is how it is sung, and that is most correctly reflected by "Bei Mir Bistu Shein."
