EDIT*11/25/2018* Thank you for all the views! I did the English subtitles on this video myself for a class project my sophmore year of college. We had to present a piece of media to the class on the topic of deconstructing fairy tales and I chose utena. I couldn't find English subtitles at the time so I decided to do my own translation. I want to apologize for the subtites being subpar I only had 4 years of Japanese classes under my belt and when I didn't understand the Japanese I fell back on the Spanish subtitles since I undertood that much better. So these are not very accurate.

Nobody seems to be talking about that, so I will - the god damn directing and sound design is beyond perfection - the beggining scene when Utena takes the ring on while the closing gate is getting louder to ultimetly close to sgow that she can't escape, the bell that start to play when the duel over the rose BRIDE starts and ends.
It's all so frigging hype I can't.

A lot of people don’t know this, but this movie actually takes place after the anime, even though it tells the same story. Remember that utena disappeared at the end of the anime and that anthy left to find her. Utena ended up in a reality prison where she experiences a repeat of her entire life (the same events from the anime). It took anthy years to find this place. By this time, her personality has changed. In a way, anthy manages to enter this reality prison to help free utena.
Also, I should probably tell you that this is an alternate continuity, an alternate world that exists alongside the original one. The original universe is the anime’s setting and the alternate universe is the movie’s setting. In the end (don’t keep reading if you didn’t see the whole movie yet), after they escaped, they returned to the original reality and yes, that’s the anime’s universe. The castle we saw in the distance at the end must be the original reality.

I feel Utena's anger at the whole system of setting up girls so they're 'rescued' and that then leading to romance as an expectation ala fairy tales - and Anthy only reacting and moving to arm her after she explicitly states this - is one of the biggest clues this is an Utena after the series even if she's been reset in some way.
I can never tell if Utena's hair grows or just comes undone
been wondering the same thing for ages, but there is actually concept art for the movie that shows Utena braiding her hair up to make it look shorter!
it also becomes obvious in shots like 2:53, once you know to look for it.
That being said, her hair is ten billion times longer than that amount of braiding allows for, but that's the art style, so... the answer is whatever you prefer. Both are right.

@@olivergaspar6729 surprisingly, about half of his screentime. Here, on the other hand, he looked like he was about to turn into a dragon or some shit and eat Utena alive. At best.
One of the most badass anime fight scenes of all time!!
Basically the 1st clip means that this is actually an extension of the anime and the rest of the student council are not there for the rose bride but to wake Utena up

I genuinely believe that this author especially adores this japanese artistic idea of portraying ideas via complex relations of esoteric symbols and disjoining original meaning from the intended aesthetics. One's hair doesnt grow from pulling an ephemerical sword from a lady's breasts now, does it?
