    I heard a sound I've never heard in all of my 65 years of loving summer night sounds as an avid outdoors person around ponds, swamps and creeks and a farm owner. Warm, damp early June 2024 I was out at night at the barn to feed. The frogs were exceptionally loud. Then I heard it....I stopped because I thought it was a baby animal or an injured animal at my second barn. With cellphone flashlight in hand I took a closer look to find the source. Eventually I figured out the sound was coming from the gutter of my second barn. The ....?.... was hanging its head over the edge and I could see it's throat filling. It had a more rounded mouth line, appeared gray in color from underneath. It made a sound I can best describe as almost a "turkey-like" call when they rub flat wood together in a sideways stroke, before the gobbling. I was able to record the sound but you can't see the source. You either have a flashlight or a video but not both. I've played it for friends who are avid nature and wildlife people and no one has heard it before. Nothing in this video came close. The video does identify the background chorus of that night. Thoughts? Always Movin' in SW O-H-I-O

      That is interesting. Are you on iNaturalist? You can join for free and than post the video of the sound. They will be able to ID it for you.

    Thanks! Just got back from a hike where we passed a small pond with a loud chorus of what I now know are spring peepers.

      You may have. I thought I heard one about a week ago. I think the warm weather has been keeping them active.

    I love the frogs calls from the eastern US. Lots of variety. In California, we get the typical "rib-it" Pacific Chorus Frog calls which are cool but pretty much the only ones you hear.

    Can't tell if I heard a Mountain or Western chorus frog here last year. I'm in Northern Ohio.

    • @jasonashley9853
      @jasonashley9853 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      So that would be a Western Chorus Frog. We don't have the Mountain Chorus Frog here.

    • @meeshu6156
      @meeshu6156 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mountain chorus frogs are restricted to the Appalachians so you definetly heard a western chorus frog.
