Situation in UAE increasingly worrying for international LGBTQ community

  • It has taken years of revolutionary movements to bring about concrete changes in Islamic countries, whether it was about political rights or human rights
The United Arab Emirates has been one of the contradictory regions which poses as an evolved and progressive nation, but at the core of its values and system is almost like any Islamic nation trying to banish human rights in the name of religion
Even though, accepting the LGBTQ community has never been one of its strongest suits the UAE was reported to be becoming increasingly hostile towards the community. By far queer people have managed to live in the Gulf state by laying low
However, that is about to change soon since UAE has been planning on carrying out a new crackdown on the LGBTQ community, which could sabotage their lives
The homosexual community has a completely different life behind closed doors they go to clubs, hotels to party with fellow community members, but only based on word of mouth or social media information sharing, no hotel or club openly. labels itself as a “gay club” or even make use of a similar term to advertise itself
Matthew, a Dubai-based British lawyer claims that the strategy has so far worked in the favour of the LGBTQ community living a double life in the Emirates, since the Gulf state prioritizes privacy and respecting that privacy is paramount
Yet this happens despite UAEs penal code laying out punishment for “any flagrant indecent act” which often translates to ‘homosexuality’, meaning it is a punishable offense. As per Article 358, a saying or act offending public morals is punishable by up to 50,000 dirhams ($13,000) fine or even imprisonment, in some cases
However, problems started surfacing after UAE’s Ministry of Education approved a latest code of conduct meant for education professionals in early September 2022. One of the tenets in the newly introduced framework explicitly banned in class “discussing gender identity, homosexuality or any other behaviour deemed unacceptable to the UAE’s society”
This was bound to affect foreigners working in the country as English teachers which is said to be a ripple effect of the so-called coordinated efforts by neighboring nations cracking down on homosexuality by banning rainbow flag or products of the same theme Per the latest global equality index, Equaldex, UAE ranks 5 out of 100 point. The country also recently banned a Disney movie for portraying a same-sex kissing scene.

Most important thing you'll ever read... They will be throw into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. The righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears let him hear. Matthew 13:42 In the parable of the weeds Jesus talks about two weeds growing side by side one God's children the other the Devil's. To avoid hell you must repent and believe in Jesus son of God.
