I always felt Annie Lennox was the female equivalent of Prince in terms of how theatrical and creative they were in both the presentation of their songs and lyrically. Both outstanding artists and have the right to be called legends.
David Bowie. There is even the physical resemblance. Intellectual, creative, dramatic, vocal ability. Somewhere down the genetic line, they must be related. Brother and sister in spirit.
She is so unique. Makes me think of the 2012 London Olympics where she floated into the arena in her own galleon with a period costumed entourage and because it was Annie Lennox you went, 'sure...why not?' LOL
This song was written by a British group called The Lover Speaks. They were thrilled with her cover of it. I can’t think of any artist who layers their own vocals the way she does. Certainly not as well as she does. But that speaks to both her artistic vision and her work ethic. By the way, she co-directed this video and was responsible for its concept, She had seen a video of male ballet dancers dancing on point and was inspired by them. She’s a genius.
I think the original is just as good, perhaps even better, at least in my opinion. It has that New Romantic, high drama, historical 'ruffles' aesthetic and vibe that was very much of its time, being the 1980s, and I slightly prefer the yearning young man perspective that it is sung from in the original. Mind you, Annie Lennox's is a very special version and she really made it unique and memorable.
The song is actually a cover of a song by a band called The Lover Speaks, which had been a very mintor hit somewhere in the world. They had supported Eurythmics on tour during the 80's and when Annie recorded the album Medusa which is an album of covers she remembered this song.
All the songs on this album are covers, and in my opinion she does a great job with every song. Her version of “Waiting In vain” is the best cover I’ve heard of a Bob Marley song. “A whiter shade of pale” is really good too.
I know this is my third comment, but I had to say this. I'm totally on the same page as you , the way you have expressed your thoughts on love and the rest of it. You are spot on. You are in a good place mentally and it shows. Stay true to you. God bless.
I love when you review Annie Lennox/Eurythmics! She was such a pioneer with artistic music videos and pushing societal boundaries... I use to listen to this song in the car really loud and people would be looking over at me like i was crazy lol. For me this song is about someone who fell head over heels in love, they fell in love and broke up . All the sudden the spoken words of love no longer have the same meaning--changes are shifting outside the words. The desire to be loved by that person and the despair knowing that they no longer love you in the same way is overwhelming. They might have once cried over a tune they heard in their head or over the radio, but now it is what it is. And it's scarey to start over, when you have been hurt so badly... (by the way I have another eurythmics song for you to review that is a super visual music video that no one else has reviewed before.. let me know where to request it.)

Been a huge Annie fan all the way back to the first records in The Tourists - best live voice I have ever heard in concert right back on the Sweet Dreams tour.
I love you dude, and I mean it. Because you're open of heart and we need more people like you. As others have said - "Love Song for a Vampire" next please - it's a lullaby with a tinge of melancholy, and it's beautiful.
What I always took from this is like “i’m done with saying i love you’s” as it always hurts sooner or later.. and what i love about this video (it’s just a personal interpretation) is how the characters brake free and feel fantastic while exploring their fantasies or even their true selves… when you see the man in the end, you can feel his emptiness for being holding himself back… then again it’s just a point of view 😅
I love her. Beautiful song and beautiful vocals. Great reaction. I've always seen the lyrics of this song being words spoken by a lover who's fallen out of love with someone. She's basically leaving a relationship that proved to be toxic. The part where she says, I used to have demons in my room at night, then she repeats desire and despair a few times which sums up the relationship she's leaving. She also talks about speaking about the monsters which is another hint of how negatively the relationship impacted her emotionally. This causes her to no longer be in love with that person. She also talks about her aching heart and restless nights. She says my aching heart would bleed for you to see, and those are the beginning of the lyrics which kind of frames the song as a heartbroken lover reflecting on a bad relationship, and why she is no longer in love and can no longer speak those 3 words (I love you) to this person. That's why she says the language is leaving me and changes are shifting outside the words.
I enjoy your reactions and thank you for doing them for us. Please check out these artists later works as their compositions and vocals have aged like fine wine: Annie Lennox - "Dark Road" Dolly Parton - "Red Shoes"; and her covers of "The Story" and "Shine" Another oldie but goody is "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You" by Stevie Nicks. I know this reaction is a couple years old now, but I thought of a good one for you. Check out "Sing" from the album of hers "Songs of Mass Destruction" from 2007. It has the largest collection of popular femal singers on one song. And the subject matter had never been spoken of in music before. I'm intrigued what your response would be to it.
I view the whole thing as "i was plagued by demons of desire but now I'm free of it and really genuinely happy for it", I think for the character of this song they were exhausted. Not necessarily jaded, just... learning to love more precisely, more quietly. And I don't think it's even an ending, it may even be temporary while they learn to process things again. It just seems like quite a positive song to me, in that specific situation
I'm going to do an Annie Trib everything Annie. I have 'Cold' on my chan too putting up Money Can't buy it...so far I've only done one first time pass of these songs wait til I fkn nail them. She's a genius
This is a song about utter disillusionment with love, about a former romantic's heart turning cold for good. If you don't believe me, read a couple of interviews with the guys who wrote it.
You are the only one who dissected this lyric. I believe that the jaded ones are just too tired of proving their devotion when the other one would repeatedly hurt them.
i look at it like the cooperative gf/partner always forgiving and accepting the faults of their mate until one day you realize they are not reciprocating ever..
This song to me is about moving on from feeling hopelessly in love and dependent on another person. The lyrics are, "Changes are shifting outside the words'. She sings about being tortured by these 'demons' of desire and despair and is celebrating finally feeling the liberation of letting go.

I'm noticing more and more that a theme of her videos, if not necessarily her songs, is decadence, and surface vs internal. "Walking on broken glass" had that baroque imagery : a ballroom party filled with 18th century characters dressed in wigs. While "No more I love you's" must be inspired by seedy brothels from la belle époque. It's like Anton is saying, her videos are often full of high drama, and striking imagery. It is difficult to remain neutral, and I think Annie Lennox uses both the music and the visuals to reach out to us as humans, shaking us up and making us react.

We stop the dystopian future through education. And education in this country is disintegrating. Purposely, by those who depend on desperately poor people to maintain their oligarchies. Rich people need poor people, willing to do the labor to live. They need us to stay poor and uneducated, so they have undermined our free education system. Our once excellent public school system is crap now, for reasons that benefit the few, not the many.
