- Campus Reform correspondent Kaia Lehenbauer went to the University of Virginia to ask students their thoughts about Presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy's proposal that all high school students must pass a basic civics test to graduate. Student responses were mixed, with one claiming that the requirement is "elitist" and another saying students should have a basic understanding of civics. Tides took another turn when many college students interviewed could not answer the civic questions correctly. Watch now!

Sure, but these "basic" questions weren't about rights. It would be better for people to know what the contents of the amendments contained than to know the number. Your point is true none the less.
I would add that if a country doesn’t know it’s past, how can it properly create its future.
Many people are more clued into their rights than their responsibilities.

Just as she said later, I'm smart in certain areas. She believes she should be able to choose what to learn to define her intelligence, even at the basic level. If she didn't believe reading, writing and math were needed, she wouldn't do it.

@@josephpearlman4010 That's insane. A BASIC level of education is necessary to be successful as an adult. We need to know just the basics of our country and government to be able to vote. Otherwise you get situations like, well, the current state of our government. It's a mess. And it's making many states and cities a mess. Look at the west coast.

Back in the day we called that "passing grades". Do the indoctrination centers pretending to be schools even use a grading system anymore or do they just give everybody participation As and pass them on along?

I'm curious to know how he thinks that would work. You only have to get six out of ten questions right to pass the citizenship test so would students just get ten random questions (out of the 100 questions on the test) and if they got six right they'd pass?
Sadly even people taking the citizenship test can't even answer these questions even though USCIS gives them all of the questions and answers to practice with. When I was studying for my test I saw lots of practice test videos on TH-cam where people would ask the channel owner who their governor or state representatives were or what the capital of their state was. I was so disgusted.

I'm 50 years old and was able to answer the questions correctly. When I graduated you had to pass 2 yrs of History, 1 yr of Geography, & 1 semester of Government.
If I recall, Vivek said that u had to pass a civics test to vote, not to graduate. Although, I think it probably should be both.
It's a problem if he's saying it should be a federal law though. Both voting and education are left up to the states. He should read Article I, Section 8 of the constitution.
Illinois used to require us to pass a civics test in junior high!

@@MOH717ablea lot of schools require certain specific classes. My school required Women's Studies or Native American Studies, so I'm sure others also have gender studies in the mix too.
@@SomeonesGhost That’s strange my school never required that. We’re talking about college right? Course requirement would likely be tied to the major you chose or planned on taking you’d only get any of these classes unless you actually picked them.

I had to pass both a civics and government class, with at least a C, in order to graduate HS in 1981.

Vivek is spot on with his goal of having a requirement to pass a civics test. He wants people to understand what makes this country great and he wants people to appreciate the freedoms we have. He will be a great leader - Vivek 2024!

Basic understanding of your state government positions and terms could be taught in an hour. Also, yes, a diploma should be based on basic aptitude.
Another important civics lesson: Knowing the Constitution. The federal government should have NO control over education. Education is best left to the local level.
Civics and US history are two different courses. Funny, question that should be asked is, Is the system broken? If you don't know what the system is or how it works aka Civics, then how would you know if it broken?

Some of these answers are shameful considering they were asked on the campus of the university founded by Thomas Jefferson.
This was a great video to do. I disagree with the girl who says "it's elitist because it's like if you can't meet a certain level of standardized intelligence, you can't graduate."
What seems elitist is getting into University of Virginia, a very competitive school, and then not thinking the average high school student can answer questions like "Which state is the Statue of Liberty in?" and "What's the supreme law of the land?"
I think the proposed test would be one of the easiest requirements in graduating high school. It's not even an extra class.
They don't know because they haven't studied it since high school so what they're saying is they didn't retain that knowledge for what three years? There's the future leaders of our country folks. Everybody should be able to breathe a sigh of relief right, right?

Considering these are questions people take to become a US Citizen and ones that many elementary kids could answer, this should absolutely be a requirement for high school graduation, no matter who wins the presidency.

Interestingly, I learned most of this stuff in eighth grade, then learned more in depth in high school in my junior & senior years. But then, I’m 73 years old. 🤔
If you say the word like, I can never take you seriously. I got out of that phase when I was 12 years old.
A glimmer of hope in that a couple of them acknowledged their ignorance and wanted to do something to correct it.
I had to take and pass government to go to high school 1962. I had to pass civics in high school also. Really don't know why it was taken out. Everyone needs to have an understanding of how our form of government works. If you know than you can hold the politicians accountable when they try to bypass the rights of the people.

I graduated from Alhambra High School in 1986 and the U.S. Government class was a requirement to graduate.

I'm surprised they didn't know what "required to graduate means". It just means the schools would add a required class to the curriculum. Gee, they just graduated high school in the last few years. They should had seen a list of required classes to graduate.

This is the bitter grandchild of the Enlightenment, where the “old” philosophers (Aristotle in particular) are thrown out the window. Aristotle, among others teach that there is truth and goodness outside of us; that there is a universal standard of virtue that we are all made to achieve; that there is a good and proper way to relate to one another that will benefit ourselves, the other (friends), and society.
Fortunately, you don’t have to go to college and get a BA in Philosophy to figure out what’s wrong with our society. You just have to step back, turn off the TV, internet, and your opinionated friends and think rationally….(Sadly, that’s a big request for most people).

A most important question that should have been asked before the "pop quiz":
"Did you vote in the last election, and/or are you registered to vote now?"
You don't need to know how a car works to know how to not get scammed into buying a lemon. What we need is parents who will teach their kids how to think for themselves. Public schools will never teach them that.
Voting is not a right, regardless of how many nonsensical amendments are made to the Constitution.
Civics was a mandatory class when I went to school (Ohio public school system, graduated 1980). You also had to take one foreign language.
Same here in PA. Graduated in 85. All seniors had to take it.
Civics was part of my ninth grade high school curriculum one semester was civics. The other semester was geography. I remember doing a report about the electoral college
It is not elitist to require a person to be competent before allowing them to perform an important task (like voting). We have to take a driving course and pass a test before being allowed to drive. Why do people think that voting is less consequential than driving a car?
That these students don’t know so much is not a failure on their part, it is a failure on the part of their teachers , administrators and school boards.

We had to memorize and recite the Gettysburg Address in front of our class as well as pass a test on the Constitution before we could graduate from middle school. (It was the year 1984. I have no idea if they are still doing this). I hated it at the time-but I am so grateful for it now.
Civics was a required class when I was a youngster. Late 60s, early 70s time frame. I'm not sure when it went away.

In 1968 we had such a test we needed to pass, if I remember correctly.
I don't remember there being an "exit exam" when I graduated from HS, but I do remember teachers that didn't feel bad about failing you if you didn't get good grades (or were inappropriate) in their class. (current age - 77)

I think this should also include a basic understanding of logical fallacies and how to spot them....This should go a long ways in preventing them from being manipulated by deceptive political leaders.

When I was in school Civics was a requirement to graduate high school.

Wow by eighth grade I could answer everyone of those questions. We had a civics and government class before we graduated from grade school.

What happened to testing in school and if you don’t pass you don’t go to the next level? That was the standard knowledge you needed to pass and build upon to harder subjects.

In Illinois, all high school students are required to take a minimum of 1 semester of a U.S.Government class. They are also required to pass a Constitution test with a minimum of 75% in order to graduate.
And this video proves that we need this mandatory course , how can you even vote if you don't understand how it works and what it means . Mind you, these are university students.
You SHOULD have basic knowledge to be productive in society, math, reading, writing and civics. It's not subjective. Civics is not just about history as some said here. It's also about the services provided and when you should or shouldn't use them. Not calling 911 because your hamburger had too much onions would be taught in Civics.
Maybe when the pediatric neurosurgeon who’s about to operate on their infant’s brain didn’t have to pass exams in med school because it was “elitism “ does a bad job, they’ll be forced to rethink their values.
Or not and just let everyone sail through higher education and create the world they want.
