  • I show how to remove a stubborn wedge cotter pin from a cottered crank using a hammer. This bike is a 1969 Raleigh, so the cotter pin may have been in there for 45 years.

I used the C Clamp and socket over the pin just today on a 67 Dunelt. I’ll need new pins but those are obtainable. I had not seen the block of wood method before. That’s a keeper.

What I do, is go to HF and buy a six
inch metal “C” clamp (around four dollars), Next lub everything
(on the cotter pins) up with PB Blaster. Now get a socket that is
bigger then the head of the cotter pin. Hold the “C” clamp so
that the socket is on one inside end of the clamp (position over the
head of the cotter pin) and the other end of the clamp is on the
loosen nut of the cotter pin. The idea is, as you apply force, by
tightening the “C” clamp, the head of the cotter pin is moved
into the open inside space of the socket. This should work even if
the cotter pin is bent. Three final thoughts, one is loosen the nuts
as the video shows. Second, is you might have to use a small brass
drift to tap out the pins when they are almost out but still stuck
inside the cranks. Third, is use a pair of vice grips on the “C”
clamp if you run out of torque. Take your time!

Looks like a great meathod! I'll have to try it out. I've alwayd had luck with a c-clamp and a socket. A couple of shots from a hammer on the top of the clamp if its stubborn usually does the trick.

Great video. The only thing I don't like is smashing the crank with the hammer head. I would use a wood block to protect the chrome plating.

I learned about Liquid Wrench, you refer to it as penetrating oil, many years ago. I've had many stubborn parts succumb to its persuasion. In this instance, it didn't seem to work its usual magic but we'll never know what the outcome would have been here without it. I'm sure it helped. The way the crank just glided off the spindle can surely be attributed to it---that, and the vibrations that all that banging produced, allowed the solvent to penetrate.

One time my crank started to get some play in it. I rolled into the nearest bike shop and said i needed to borrow a couple of hammers. I held one on the back side of the crank to absorb the shock and tapped on the pin with the other. Then I took up the slack on the nut and I was good to go.

When I bought a used three speed in Norfolk, Virginia in 1969 the bike shop had a set of pincers similar to bolt cutters for removing and replacing crank pins. I got to use it. A lot nicer than using a hammer which I had done many times.

Not familiar with those. There used to be some tools that worked like C Cla,ps. but they are out of production. You can find them used on ebay.

Thank you! I wasn't even sure what the terminology was for these parts until I found your video.
My suntour centurian had the cotter pin's threaded end come off with the bolt (my fault for over tightening). I'm going to try placing a small chisel on the remaining part of the pin and using your hammer technique to free it up.
Now to find a place to buy a new cotter pin...

Brilliant videos. Thank you. I had a stuck stem and your method of tapping the bolt to free up the clamp worked perfectly. Unfortunately I'd already mushroomed the cotter pins in the crank but on another bike the methods in this video worked perfectly.

F McEwan I don't know about MokeyShred, but I ran into one cotter pin that just would come out using either of my normal methods. I ended up drilling down through the cotter pin. You can see it at about 2:30 in this video: Overhaul Bottom Bracket On Vintage Peugeot Bike

Restoring two his and hers early 80"s steyr cruisers, the hammer method made me cringe, im thinking some kind of vice or punch press, your method is counter productive to the preservation process of these extremely rare bikes, is essentially a hurried hack job,
