How To Remove Stuck Crank Cotter Pin With A Vise On Vintage Bike

  • I use a vise to remove a stuck wedge cotter pin from the crank of a 45 year old Raleigh bike. The pins in cottered cranks can be VERY difficult to remove. There are multiple ways to do it. The best way is to use a pin press if you have one, but most people don't. You can also hammer the pin out. In this video I use a vise to press the pin out. I also use penetrating oil to help get it loosened.

Brilliant idea! I’m restoring a 1963 Armstrong. The hammer wasn’t doing anything for me, so I gave this a shot. It took a lot of setup, since I had to remove and transport a bench vice, but it worked well. The resulting explosion of the cotter pin letting go was fantastic. Thanks!

Thanks fella. It worked a treat.

This worked perfectly for me, thanks! The only thing I would change is put the pin in the center of the vise jaws. Looks like you have a good old vise, but a cheap vise might break. I put my bike sideways balanced between 2 chairs so the pin was in the middle of the vise and after some penetrating oil and a cheater bar it came out easily.

Yeah, my vise is pretty heavy duty.

I modified your approach using a socket and an 8" C-clamp to get the pin out of an 1890's bike crank. I had not been able to drive it out with a wood block and hammer. With the C clamp tightened down just enough, I gave the clamp a whack with a hammer and the pin popped out instantly. The clamp makes a nice big target for the hammer, BTW.

As a lifelong cyclist, I am puzzled as to why it took me forty odd years to learn this secret to removing cottered pins! I've read that some cycle tool manufacturers used to make special cotter pin removing tools, an one time ("...at band camp...!"), I even saw photos of some of them ; but honestly, do they even exist??!! Get a vice----- everyman needs a vice!. Notes: penetrating oils/ heat/ tapping(ultrasound!) ----- all are unnecessary as the power of the Acme threads in a vice are supreme. Do however ensure the pin is centrally located in the jaws of the vice. Lastly : the perfect spacer washer to use over the end of the cotter will be found on the old style five speed blocks ; it's the axle spacer washer on the drive side.
This is a great resource channel for cyclists, please keep it up. 🚴🙏

Great idea....Only thing I do different is when using a hammer on any bicycle, I use brass or bronze hammer.

That was pretty smart using that socket like that, a large clamp might work too possibly, but so now are the threads ok?

I have a tuck tricycle wheel that the pin is rusted on so bad that i can't twist the pin to move but you have me a good idea with the vice & the socket so i can remove the wheel.

I'm restoring my dad's shimano aerodynamic and has also the same pin from the crank. I have a problem with the pin because it's broken and vise grip(small one) wont unscrew it. I don't have tools to do the things you did in this video. BTW your vids helped me a lot :)
    Sorry for bad english.

If you don't have a spare loose vice, you can use a G clamp instead. Put the moveable foot on the socket side, the fixed foot against the pin. Do it up tight and then go and get a cup of tea, you'll find all the pieces on the floor when you get back.

2:39 at this stage i tap the vice with a hammer a few times, and continue tightening more but without a cheater bar. This way the impact force really helps breaking the pin loose without damaging it.

question...before I saw this video, I tried removal using a hammer and now have a mushroomed over pin. Any thoughts on how to remove a pin once mushroomed?

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  10 ปีที่แล้ว

Yep, sometimes they just don't want to come out. Drill down through the pin to relieve pressure, and then pound it out with punch.
I had to do that in this video: Overhaul Bottom Bracket On Vintage Peugeot Bike
