Hi. Can you please tell me if a dental speciality training for 3 years in Europe, Romania will be recognized in the UK? I don't know if I should be doing a dental speciality training in my country and after that coming to the UK or not doing one at all and come as a general dentist. How much does it matter in the UK to be a dental specialist from another country? Thank you!
You can apply through the GDC but currently they are not looking at applications from foreign trained specialists. If you go on the GDC website you can get updates over their position. Below is their current statement. Assessed applications For UK and overseas qualified dentists without a CCST, alternative evidence can be considered for entry onto a specialist list. This route is for those who either hold a specialist dental qualification awarded outside the UK or who have gained equivalent knowledge or experience from academic or research work. Assessments are currently paused Applications for entry onto the specialist list via this route are made to the GDC and are assessed by Specialist Advisory Committees (SACs). SACs are intercollegiate bodies that advise on higher specialist training in the dental specialties. While we are accepting new applications, please note that they are not currently being assessed by the SACs. Until assessments restart, applications will not progress and, therefore, applicants will be unable to gain specialist listing. We are working with the SACs to find a resolution and will provide an update on this page once further information is available. www.gdc-uk.org/registration/your-registration/specialist-lists/specialist-list-application-pack
I am senior dentistry student studying in Turkey. I want to do my specialties in UK and continue my career there. But I don't know what path to follow at the moment. Could you please help?
I have a video on this - th-cam.com/video/k04JNLM_oq4/w-d-xo.html The General Dental Council website will detail how you can register as a dentist in the UK. This will also provide information on how you can become a specialist.
Thank you. One question. If I have completed Membership of Restorative Dentistry (MRD) exam. Can I register as a specialist or are there other requirements?
Well done with that achievement. Get in touch with the GDC to find out about getting onto their specialist register. You may find the following link useful:- www.gdc-uk.org/registration/your-registration/specialist-lists
Hello!! What about the postgraduate programme? For example, if I attend a aesthetic dentistry postgrad programme, would be that ‘enough’ to find a job or the specialisation is better for the competition? Thank you so much from Rome!☺️
There are job opportunities available as a general dentist without having to specialise. Having accumulated skills and competencies will make you more competitive when applying for jobs. Also a portfolio of cases you have completed can be useful.
I'm a dentist from India. I am thinking of pursuing masters in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from Glasgow University. I just want to know if this is in any way beneficial or not? Basically will this two years course will be a step closer to being a specialist?
There is a set pathway for becoming a specialist in the UK. The first step would be to register with the GDC. www.gdc-uk.org/registration/overseas-registration-exam
You cant practice as an OMFS in the UK unless you have an MBBS degreee as well. If you only have a BDS from India and you pursue this M.Sc program, to practice in the UK afterwards you will first need to clear the ORE which is the licensing exam, then sit for the MOral Surgery exam, after this you''ll be an Oral Surgeon and not an OMFS, you will be able to carry out minor surgical procedures like extractions, impactions, implants and minor cysts, but not major surgeries like cancer, orthognathic etc. That goes to OMFS.
Yet another insightful video! 👍🏽
Thank you Zaid :)
This is so nice......keep on the good work.
Is dental core training mandatory before the speciality training for international dentists after getting their performer number?!
Can U make a video if an overseas dentist can practice any kind of speciality as Prosthodontics

What’s the point of the core training, is it obligatory?
