This film was a box-office disappointment, and, after the huge flop of Davis and Harlin's film the year before, "Cutthroat Island", Geena's film star status all but died. But I think this is a great movie, and Davis and Jackson are an incredible double (or triple) act.

    • @ToniMcGinty
      @ToniMcGinty 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

The film wasn't really Jason Bourne before Jason Bourne, as Bourne was based on a novel that came out long before Kiss Goodnight, and was even made into a miniseries in 1988 with Richard Chamberlain and Jaclyn Smith.

@@Cybertron-cs7sk This is a general character writing win. An unstoppable perfect hero is possible to write well. but significantly harder to do. A character with flaws who struggles during their journey is easier to relate to and root for. Peter Parker isn't loved because he's an unstoppable super-hero. he is loved because he is an every man given greater abilities than the casual person who struggles to do the right thing. it's so weird there are so many writers in general now that don't understand simple rules of writing. especially since they've largely been through college courses to teach them.

"Easy, sport. I got myself outta Beirut once, I think I can get outta New Jersey."
"Yeah? Well, don't be so sure. Others have tried and failed. The entire population, in fact."
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Shawn Doyle.
Pay Day Fact: Shane Black became the first writer to sell a script for $4 million. He later admitted that this caused a lot of envy among his fellow screenwriters, as well as accusations of commercialism.
Location Location Fact: The resort Windemere House in the Muskoka region of Ontario, Canada burned down while filming scenes there. The production company had to re-work the scenes in Collingwood, Ontario. Windemere House has since been rebuilt.
New Ending Fact: In the first draft of the screenplay, Mitch (Samuel L. Jackson) dies of his bullet wounds. Test audiences liked his character and performance so much so that the ending was re-shot, letting him live to save the day and redeem himself. On the The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (2014) on January 14, 2019, Samuel L. Jackson listed Mitch as his favorite role.
Action Star Fact: Geena Davis and then-husband director Renny Harlin checked how long she could hold her breath in their bathtub to prepare for the "water torture" scene. This film and Cutthroat Island (1995) were attempts by director Renny Harlin and his then-wife, Geena Davis, to not only further her career, but to generate more public interest in female action stars. The ice skating scene was scripted to end with Samantha performing a double axel flip and simultaneously firing over her upside-down head. After two aerial-rig configurations (in sub-zero conditions) and several attempts at greenscreening failed to hold any convincing fluency to the action, it was dropped from the final cut of the film.

Geena Davis's Charlie is one of the greatest action heroes of all time. This is one of my favorite movies, easily. Her and Sam L Jackson are great together, and his humor makes the movie work. I would love to see a sequel before they get too old; it might be refreshing to audiences today.
(At the time this came out, a female hero was still uncommon, and I loved the movie a bit more for not bending to stereotypes, which still happened then.)

I think, Geena Davis did a wonderful job with these alternate characters, I wish it had led to more action movies for her.
I`d like to suggest another 2 film`s that lack reactions. The first is the 1971 British Crime/Thriller film (Get Carter), starring Michael Caine, Ian Hendry, Britt Ekland & Alun Armstrong. The second is the 1980 British Crime/Thriller film (The Long Good Friday), starring Bob Hoskins, Helen Mirren & Pierce Brosnan.

"Bourne before Bourne"... Well, no. Robert Ludlum wrote the book in 1980 and the television movie screened in 1988 starring Richard Chamberlain and Jaclyn Smith. Which is 8 years before long kiss goodnight. If anything - it was a female-lead re-invention of the story. Still, the association is correct, the time order isn't.

Good reaction, guys. But per what you said around the 9:55 minute mark, that's actually not true. The 'Jason Bourne series of novels were written by the late great suspense thriller author, Robert Ludlum back in the mid-to-late 1970s to 1980s. Many of his other suspense thriller novels were actually made into Hollywood movies in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. The very first Jason Bourne movie, though, was actually a popular TV movie that aired in 1988....it was a 2 or 3 part mini-series. So, the Bourne novels were already out there, along with a Jason Bourne movie in 1988.
Btw, Robert Ludlum was such a prolific suspense thriller author who wrote very intimate detail about the operations of the CIA, that many believed that the author was actually a CIA Ops officer (or CIA Analyst) prior to becoming an author full time. That's how great he was.

Partly because I think they'll really enjoy it and partly because I know I'll enjoy their experience with it. I just can't figure our how I missed this for four freaking months. Edit: Re Mitch being one you your favorites SLJ roles, he said the same thing. After 110 other roles, Mitch was his favorite.

I saw this movie in the theaters with my wife, then I bought it on VHS and later bought it on DVD, you could say I love this movie. So when I saw that interview with Jennifer Lawrence where she said she was the first woman to play the lead in an action movie I just laughed and said that would be news to Geena Davis and Sigourney Weaver not to mention many others. I am pleased that you also enjoyed this movie.

I’ve never seen this one either. Thanks to you, I’ll see the abridged version. Thanks! lol. I do love Geena Davis and Sam Jackson. Working at a video store in the 90’s, I’ve heard of all these- IF not an avid geeky fan. But now I want to watch this for real. It looks pretty good. 90’s movies were the bomb. LOL. LOVED so many.

Really glad you two decided to react to this Shane Black classic! Great film, with terrific performances from pretty much everyone involved especially Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson. Loved it when I saw it the theaters back in the day. The fact that is was filmed in Ontario Canada, near where I lived was an added bonus. Kept seeing locations that I grew up around. Always wished they had done a sequel.

So, it was great revisiting The Long Kiss Goodnight. It’s been such a long time since I’ve seen this when it was released in 1996.
Geena Davis and Samuel L Jackson nailed their roles in this gem 💎 of a true classic movie that seems to never get old.
The rollercoaster ride of action sequences are timeless and always seems to keep you on the edge of your seat wanting for more

According to an interview with theundefeated (now andscape) the role of Mitch Hennessey was Samuel L. Jackson's favorite roll of his career. The movie was a commercial failure basically because the studio did not know how to market it. Despite coming just four years after _Thelma and Louise_ "Girl Boss" movies just were not a big thing in the 1990s and the previous year Geena Davis' _Cutthroat Island_ was a mega-flop at the box office. So, the studio didn't have much faith in this film and failed to market it effectively. Jackson claimed to have told the studio execs to just market it during daytime soaps and women would drag their men to see it. But they refused to listen and this film also failed financially. And this film basically ended Davis' movie career. It's too bad since writer, Shane Black, had a sequel planned. In the original script Jackson's character dies but they re-wrote the ending to allow for him to reprise his roll in the sequel which would never be made. This is a movie that I would want millennials to see when they claim Hollywood never had _strong female characters_ prior to movies like _The Hunger Games._ This is easily my favorite Geena Davis film. Her ability to switch between Samantha and Charlie is chilling at times and that is testament to her acting chops. I am glad that you ladies enjoyed it so much.
