Their own words from their wiki- "The only successful Arab-Jewish partnership in history'. . Haaha!!! Awesomely talented and extremely chilled out, truly, our 'friends in funk'..
Dear Future Music-- all I see on your page is interviews with EDM this, EDM that. This is one of your best interviews. You need more videos with real musicians.
Most of their synths aren't real. They're empty enclosures, made by their kids, or are defunct models from ebay, sold as spare parts. Looks impressive though. Had us all fooled, huh? Most of their music is made with VSTs like Sylenth and Massive. The Pentium 2 is only part of their joke on us. 😁😁😁 (kidding)
Tazmanian Ninja hahahah may as well be. Now days you cant still get all of that without having to get vintage shit. Which is great getting the best of both worlds. Some will argue its just not the same . It isnt but its pretty damn close and good emough in most cases. That n most shit around now is a sample. You dont really need the reel thing you can literally sample a sound u like and pitch it n every key. N bam you got the instrument on the software or sampler.
Finally a feature where the producer(s) aren't sitting in front of a monitor the whole time clicking a mouse and playing souless progressions on their 25 key midi board. This is great!
When I die an go to hell I will be given a computer with that old Cakewalk program and an infinite stack of sheet music, with the assignment to click every note in with a mouse, editing each note's velocity by typing it.
Hah, these guys rule - love that studio! Funny to hear them talk about the velocity for drum hits in their ancient pc software. I used to own a Drumtraks and my mind was blown when a very talented drummer friend of a friend came over to my home studio and laid down incredibly wicked beats by just his own fingertips on my Drumtraks and the LinnDrum I also had at the time. All of us in the room were in awe of his latin percussion skills shining brightly thru drum machine sounds. Made my computer sequencing and other attempts to make some funk seem so feeble. But I stuck to it and once you learn the machines you can do so much, always progressing is the key. Much respect to these two guys for laying it down in an old school way that really works.
I love Chromeo's music - These guys were gigging in Leeds (U.K.) a couple of years ago - Unfortunately I was in hospital at the time - I would have loved to have seen them - Cannot even get a hold of their albums in U.K. -Tried HMV no joy ! - Unless you use i - tunes or use the web - Don't like MP3's & prefer new rather than second hand - Any way there is my gripe - Apart from getting a better distribution set up - There is nothing wrong about these guys - Their music is Fab ! - When I try to describe them to my mates - I tell them that they are a duo who use todays tech. to make 80's style electro funk music - They invite us into their world where if todays tech. would have been available back in the 80's this is what the music we would have been listening to!!! Keep up the good work guys - Keep up the great work guys & I'll keep searching for your albums !!!
P.S.- I haven't bought a copy of future music for quite a while - But I still have a box full somewhere in my attic - Complete with the freebie discs & tasters -Thanks for sharing this docu about/with this great duo Chromeo
For the way they are working, it's probably easier to have a separate computer for tracking (midi) and a separate computer for recording/DI/mixing/mastering/ect. Hell, it's actually a somewhat brilliant way of working, as instead of being distracted by constant tweaking, mixing, eq, and processing during a tracks composition, these guys have figured out that it's better to just compose and track first, worry about mixing later. The reason they are using Cakewalk is because early versions of Cakewalk were midi only. Sure, all DAWs have piano rolls that are capable of drawing/editing midi notes, but I think the point is they like using the old program because it doesn't have the superfluous bullshit of modern DAWs, and being pure midi, it probably has no latency, because it's not running through an audio interface with sample-buffers...although when you are drawing the notes in, latency probably isn't much of a factor, but maybe it is for them! The whole Cakewalk-piano-roll-to-mac thing...I think he's probably being serious. There's probably not a modern equivalent that just does midi sequencing, I think even the most basic DAWs probably have some kind of audio function. I'm sure that old Cakewalk program doesn't run on modern versions of Windows either. They'd probably like to upgrade that Pentium II...but hey, it works! Don't need much CPU power to handle midi events. It wouldn't be hard to program something similar, but I'll be damned if I'm touching the Cocoa API for something like that.
Couldn't they just use Reaper for sequencing on the mac? i get the idea that simplicity of process is key but idk why they couldn't still use that process of tracking on a different pc and sequencing on another with reaper on their mac and leaving all the complicated stuff alone.
lesFunk it's a sequential circuits drumtraks machine, you can find samples online but they will never sound as fat as they do in the video (from the drum machine itself)
This is so cool! Crazy that they click everything in though.. if they want that 'robotic' sound, why not play the MIDI live, then just drag the notes or quantize to where they want it.. that'd be a lot quicker haha
Jesus... I've read some comments saying that they're outdated and that someone needs to introduce them to Native Instruments. People, you DON'T need to use Massive for everything. These guys are all about the retro feel. They make contemporary music using analogue synths from the past. They actually do not want or need to be introduced to Massive, or any other mainstream vst synth out there.
Spring on the key was broken, a piece of paper was stuck between the neighbouring keys to keep it level/in place. Paper fell out; key sprung up. That's it. Looks good though :)
He's talking about using the DAW to send midi notes to the synths, not replacing the synths with software equivalents. The DAW sends the note to the synth and records the audio coming out of the synth in return. You're still getting the same sound out of whatever you're recording the audio from.
I am confused as to why people are stating that Chromeo need new ANYTHING? - They are a globally successful group doing an interview for FM. - How are any of you in a position to tell them what to use? lol Stop hating and work harder.
I know this is 2013, but I really hope they got a midi keyboard. All that sequencing and staring at values must suck. I love these guys to death and are my most favorite artists of all time. You can really really tell that they put effort behind their work.
Loved this! Gotta say, the whole MIDI thing is no problem on Cubase for me. I don't really use VST synths at all and it's fine to just, ya know, not use the features I don't need. Simplicity of perspective can be inspiring though, I get why they went in that direction.
You must admit, old sequencers do have their charm... I think their point is not to not to distract themselves with VST's and in the box editing of sound.
Their own words from their wiki- "The only successful Arab-Jewish partnership in history'. . Haaha!!! Awesomely talented and extremely chilled out, truly, our 'friends in funk'..
what language were they speaking? I know they were arab-jewish but from canada. But it sounds french to my ears
Two sémites
Could you imagine these two with Daft Punk?
Oshh *.* That would be more tha AWESOME!
Dear Future Music-- all I see on your page is interviews with EDM this, EDM that. This is one of your best interviews. You need more videos with real musicians.
***** um no,
Teddy P Then they wouldn't have been as productive as they have. I'm pretty sure there's no weed - neither in a jar nor drawer or anywhere else:)
The instruments doesn't doesn't, only matters is the music.
Without EDM, we would never be able to dance and have fun as much as we can.
Did anyone else see the red keyboard behind him at 13:53 one of the keys just committed suicide! LOL
da fuk was that!?!
ghost producer lol
It got a boner

their attitude is compelling..such a positive energy..love Chromeo
They have this old school essence about them. Their style, instrumentation and methods of arranging. Love it!

When 'P' came in with the sick Moog solo it sounded so cool...
+Thomas Mclaughlin Fantastic ! 19:19, this shows how complementary they are !
I just wish he had gone onto the talk box as well...

Haven't seen nothing as scary as TYPING VELOCITIES IN for a long time.
Lovely video, though. Cheers to FM production team, love your work.
I remember studying this video hard, it's good to see it again :)
by far the best "In the studio" yet.
those synths they got sound SEXY as hell
I love these guys music.
It's just really well done.
And has a nice 80s flair.
P.S.- I haven't bought a copy of future music for quite a while - But I still have a box full somewhere in my attic - Complete with the freebie discs & tasters -Thanks for sharing this docu about/with this great duo Chromeo
I discovered Chromeo 8 years ago and been fans ever since. These guys are humble and just creative af.
Oh dear god that midi sequencer is straight from hell haha what a talented bunch!
Haha, that track is ace :) so funky! They should make a full song out of it!
The high hat programming that Dave did spontaneously is masterful. I wonder if Dave could hold a class on it?
wow thanks for sharing, great video and talented guys :)
sometimes limitations are the key to freedom. :)
After 7y I’m still hoping that chromeo someday will drop this track.
seriously my favorite artists in the Universe, you guys kill it every time, can't wait to hear new music!!
I wish this was a track I could grab I love that beat, Chromeo is amazing! Got to meet them in New Orleans and there great guys
28:44 so funky, huge respect for those guys and their creativity. I was shaking my body to that damn beat

14:07 "this...this is our style, man..." hahaha SO good.
Real music producers awsome
Why do they speak in French when they're talking to each other? I've noticed they do this quite often in studio videos.
They French Canadian
They are so awesome. P is a synth genius!
hell if this will never be released, I'm borrowing some it for my own damn self, got a cool chorus and lyrics. Yeeaaah

Respect, respect, respect !!! This is AWESOME!!! Pentium 2 : )))))))))))))
Nope this is all of it - there is also a gear tour and magazine interview that went with this - check the annotations in the video :)
I found the exact drum samples and put them at the exact velocities of a thing from a Chromeo interview how did you spend your Thursday night
Kyle Beller What was the sample name ?
lesFunk it's a sequential circuits drumtraks machine, you can find samples online but they will never sound as fat as they do in the video (from the drum machine itself)
I really love that they bring back the 80's funk feel.
This makes me miss having someone to collaborate with.
same
Wow Cakewalk Pro Audio. This is old! I don't think I've ever heard a Chromeo song, but it was interesting watching them work.
there is a cakewalk for mac its called "cakewalk metro" and it runs on powerpc
This is so cool! Crazy that they click everything in though.. if they want that 'robotic' sound, why not play the MIDI live, then just drag the notes or quantize to where they want it.. that'd be a lot quicker haha
Maybe that version of cakewalk only transmits MIDI and doesn't accept MIDI as an input.
Yeah, I don't think that sequencer knows how to write the notes for itself...
I like these guys (in a musical and inter-personal way).
Jesus... I've read some comments saying that they're outdated and that someone needs to introduce them to Native Instruments. People, you DON'T need to use Massive for everything. WTF happen with the red Keyboard at 13:49 !?!?!? :D
lol yeah ... some spooky stuff going on down there
LOL, that looked like when a con man in a cartoon shows you something to buy and tells you it's brand new.
Spring on the key was broken, a piece of paper was stuck between the neighbouring keys to keep it level/in place. Paper fell out; key sprung up. That's it. Looks good though :)
Oh my lord! that was amazing. Such cool guys
dam that prophet 5 is making some sexy bass.
God damn it. They make it look so easy, meanwhile i cant even make a simple but using only the basics.
Soul/Funk/Electro - these lads are badass!!! When they playing out in the UK. Check out the Boiler Room mix they done on YT as well!!
Let's Go this music is psychedelic and Groovy BABY YEAH!!!!!!1
these guys are just too cool

Great Musicians! in LOVE with Chromeo
On 13:53, a key just jump behind him!
Damn they're just jamming out! That's so awesome.

Looks like Dave is programming the beats on MS Excel
This is how to do it folks. What a set up as well.
I bet these guys just jam on one groove for hours on end. excellent video. Great Gear~

P is a total fixer. i love it. " oh you need some of that. Ight i got you!" Hahahah
When P drops the funky ass shit maaaaaan
20 mins to make essentially a very well built loop?! Loved it! Most producers spend 1+ hours on just the drums! O.o
They got a great sound.
Loved this! Gotta say, the whole MIDI thing is no problem on Cubase for me. I don't really use VST synths at all and it's fine to just, ya know, not use the features I don't need. Simplicity of perspective can be inspiring though, I get why they went in that direction.
Damn! They play some serious Bernie Worrell flavored stuff in there. Never heard these guys before. I'll be digging a little deeper for sure
Great workflow. Awesome software.
You must admit, old sequencers do have their charm... I think their point is not to not to distract themselves with VST's and in the box editing of sound.
