In Februrary 2011 FM headed to Amsterdam to spend some time in the studio with French master of House and Tech to talk production, Ableton and hardware.
What a likeable guy and great workflow. Love the way he's not making a big deal out of anything, yet showing a pretty cool way of working things easily in ableton live.
this man is completely on my wavelength. Thanks for posting this video. I have been an admirer of Leger for years and now I can see he makes music the same way I do. A huge confidence boost for me.
What I. like with this guy is that he don't care so much about how he does things like some producers do. He just do things and know when it sounds good.
I love and respect Future Music so much they have shown me artist's that i never knew of and still continue to inspire my sound with all these in studio interview's Cheers guys thanks for the dope videos :)
If he's so bad please explain his success. He may not know all the proper terms etc, but he goes by his ears, which are the most essential part. He's had many successful tracks, can you say the same?
Sebastian explaining the studio monitiors: "[Laughs] my tour manager often says my ears have been touched by God. But I don't know what it is. I just start from scratch every time in Ableton, I never have a template of a preload. Because I come from a hardware background, you always had to finish a track and there was no way to save sounds or settings, so I work like that. I try to finish a track in around two days."
Yes he uses these speakers only. I think I remember him saying that he found (lol) the speakers a long time ago and listened to a lot of music on them, doing this over the years he got to know the speakers well before he began producing. He knows these speakers very well so why not! If you can get your music sounding good on a pair of crappy pc speakers it should sound pretty decent on a big system! You just gotta know your speakers I guess!
He actually uses those as his studio monitors. There's an old forum post from some years ago that you can find on Google where he talks about it. He said he ordered 2 more pairs of these and keeps them as backups because they works so well for him! He just uses those along with a sub and cranks out great music!
He is trolling us though... these aren't monitor speakers just normal pc speakers... He has a very expensive studio setup but no monitor speakers inside there at all... yeah he is trolling us.
+Tasso Dimopoulos I don't. These are my only reference speakers, they are great, sound amazing and most importantly I know them, my ears are tuned to them, I'll never change them. What you use isn't important, it's how you use it.
Sébastien Léger Awesome. You know what they say, if you can make it sound good on some lower grade speakers, they will sound good on any system. Perfect for referencing. I just bought a little sony radio for referencing. Should me fun.
Incredible content! Discovered Sebastien randomly with the help of a Discogs cart suggesion. His debut on wax for like 4 euros!! Now he‘s becoming one of my favorites
Why haven't you guys invested in a device that records computer outpus and allows the signal through so we can hear the real sound, when people are talking about EQ for example we can't really hear the things they're talking about...
has anybody else noticed that whenever a producer is getting interviewed in their studio on camera, they introduce themselves then turn to the monitor to check nothing and then turn back to the camera?
Just an idea to improve audience retention, Put the times of the different subjects, because i don't want to know how he creates his bassline so i'll turn it off, if you had the times for the subjects i'd skip ahead.
Dude, if your mix sounds good on those old-ass speakers, it will sound good on anything. It always pays off to bounce your mix off this kind of speakers and see exactly what's going on because, believe it or not, not everyone listens to music on studio monitors at home
Yeah but they're not playing a great deal of the stems, and they could mix the clean audio in with the mic audio to damage it whilst allowing us to hear the details they talk about, but yeah some things they wouldn't want us to have clear audio of.
To the ones who wonder as to what the little speakers are doing: Most probably he has proper monitors somewhere... And... it may be just a set of test-speakers, like lots of studios have those shitty omnipresent Yamahas NS10's the white speaker: when a track sounds good on them, it sounds good on anything.
Free? future music earn money from these videos and their magazine, additionally it's not a lot of effort, my laptop has a line in (mic) and line out (headphones) in the same way that i record my tutorials by recording the master out..and that really is for free.
Disliking because youtube wont stop recommending this video. It's like it never got the message and i wake up every morning to you holding that really bad 303 pillow.
Very interesting but also confusing as he playing the bass first note is a F but appearS like a G on his arturia keyboard. Also if you look at his arturia setting you can see the tuning is not changed ....
It will sound wrong on these. But it sounds wrong in the same way as your other records, it's good anywhere. But I think he's got bigger loudspeaker out of the camera range.
What is this term 'sychen'(?)? I understand he's talking about something that creates or leaves space for low/similar frequencies elsewhere int mix. But what is the correct spelling/term?
You my friend are are so foolish, this is Sebastian Leger ffs for a start his english is not the best and he's taken the time to do that interview. The guy is a legend in electronic music. I think what matters is his ear, even if he randomly hits the keyboard he knows what sounds good and thats where the skill is at.
What a likeable guy and great workflow. Love the way he's not making a big deal out of anything, yet showing a pretty cool way of working things easily in ableton live.
You guys need to get him and something like with Ben Bohmer 😊😊
i love the way he works , simple , not over mastered , not alot of plugins and samples
this man is completely on my wavelength. Thanks for posting this video. I have been an admirer of Leger for years and now I can see he makes music the same way I do. A huge confidence boost for me.
This style of music still kicks ass, not even aged nearly 9 years later.
its amazing what he can do with something so simple...this is what production is about... its all about your skill not the gear you use!
What I. like with this guy is that he don't care so much about how he does things like some producers do. He just do things and know when it sounds good.
I really appreciate the fact that this guy remains very ableton native as much as he can! Legit.
what you are listening to is not the speakers in the room - its a direct feed with a small amount of room spill from the mic
I love and respect Future Music so much they have shown me artist's that i never knew of and still continue to inspire my sound with all these in studio interview's Cheers guys thanks for the dope videos :)
ha nice speakers bud!
Sebastian you're a beast dude.
Learnt so much from watching this. 🙏
Thanks Future Music too 😉
All the tracks are listed in the video
Two of my favourite tunes and one of my favourite artists... Awesome video, thanks for the upload!
If he's so bad please explain his success. He may not know all the proper terms etc, but he goes by his ears, which are the most essential part.
He's had many successful tracks, can you say the same?
Just love the whole concept of letting Electro music beatmakers come and show their stuffs. They are almost straight forward. No faking.
60 percent of his fans probably initially listen to those tracks on speakers like those. Its a good choice for referencing/mastering
I love that he doesnt really use plug ins, it just shows you how ableton with some samples can be so powerful
I realized I'll probably never own a real TB-303 so I got a t-shirt with a picture of one.
Ahahahah
I got the VSt lol
Get the Behringer TD-3! It's only 115 bucks!
Talented Artist.
Forget Avantone cubes, I'm hitting up my neighborhood goodwill for my next studio monitors.
the first one for make space for the kick drum and minimal glitches, and the second to enhace the "kick" of the bass
. . . had to wait a long time, to see a profi working! - thanks Sebastien and FM!
Respect!! Very cool guy great workflow and personality!!
What a lovely guy.
Threshold -14
Ratio 10:1
'very gentle'
UrbanCrunkMovement But the amount of gain reduction is the important thing
10:1 isn't a 'gentle' sound in my opinion, but you're right if the compressor never kicks in it won't be heard.
UrbanCrunkMovement If it is only 1 db of gain reduction it is gentle.
you are right
+UrbanCrunkMovement really nice synth pillows
Sebastian explaining the studio monitiors:

can we see a new upgraded interview with sebastian? because ableton has updated and im sure he would love using the new simpler ;-)
FM Interview on our website guys where he explains the speakers ;-)
Could you share a link?
I love how laid back this dude is.
I think the best mixed track in the industry, hands down
veryt cool interview in studio. groovy beats =)
Yes he uses these speakers only. OK....those can't be his monitor speakers....where are the real ones?

retop56
Are they just plain computer speakers? They look like those logitec ones or something
What you use isn't important, it's how you use it.

i like this guy .. people hating on his speakers and whatever but . tell me this beat is not crazyfunky ?? greetz from Rotterdam !!! holland !
Yes he does. I think there is already an interview with him up on the channel where he explained that he just knows them in and out!
I love watching these video's!
mad chill and upfront sharin his knowledge.
this was the shit.
4 Kicks!!!! I can't get more than 2 that I love.
Incredible content! Discovered Sebastien randomly with the help of a Discogs cart suggesion. His debut on wax for like 4 euros!! Now he‘s becoming one of my favorites
Hello,
Merci Séb pour le partage de tes connaissances !
;-)
@+DRJ.
high school musicians are attached to rules, best musicians dont have rules.
that remix he did of Dog Tag still sounds neat even after all this years... He was so ahead of everyone with his style lol
was "Harajuku (working title)" ever released?
Impulse still has certain 'features' that are unique. Also the fact that it is only 8 pads or so makes it easier not to load in tons of extra stuff.
Why haven't you guys invested in a device that records computer outpus and allows the signal through so we can hear the real sound, when people are talking about EQ for example we can't really hear the things they're talking about...
"everyone knows what a sidechain is right" haha! tht was too funny mate
2:22 Everybody knows what sidechain is right? no ? ok fuck it hahahahaha i fucking love this guy music!!!!!!
Just want to say big up to the Ikea Jerker :)
Great video!
Great producer!
Love the thumbnail.
He is so cool! :D
Very talented Seb, unique producer!
This guy is great. Lots of good tips.
Nice one! very informative!
I would really enjoy drinking a beer with him :)
What is the KU fat preset he mentions? Cant find it in the presets.
Finally! Thanks! :)
you're welcome!
lol you replied to your own comment
So did you. Idiot!
has anybody else noticed that whenever a producer is getting interviewed in their studio on camera, they introduce themselves then turn to the monitor to check nothing and then turn back to the camera?
everything is RANDOM :) .... I love this guy :)
2 mins after the guy said he doesnt 'add' only takes away with EQ,..he has a bell curve adding around +12 db at about 5k on the kik! lol
Just an idea to improve audience retention, Put the times of the different subjects, because i don't want to know how he creates his bassline so i'll turn it off, if you had the times for the subjects i'd skip ahead.
The tb-303 is a monster itself, but... that one is badass.
more videos like this guy pls
Yes he does!! Weird choice! But that seems to work perfectly for him!! :)
this is Gold!
two 303's? man, he has some money!
the guys from hardfloor have 12 tb's haha
an old picture of kai tracid shows him (and his dog) with 8 Tb's :-0
Stef, TB´s aren´t that expensive.
***** how about getting a job and prioritizing things? You know, ordinary people buy more expensive things than 303s...
Teemu Kuukka real talk :P
Dude, if your mix sounds good on those old-ass speakers, it will sound good on anything. It always pays off to bounce your mix off this kind of speakers and see exactly what's going on because, believe it or not, not everyone listens to music on studio monitors at home

Haha I love when he says he took that FX sweep from a deadmau5-pack and coughs a bit afterwards @13:15
great episode

I need those monitors, would change those for a couple of Genelecs ;)
lol whats up with the waves MaxxBCL under his desk??? That is a serious hardware piece. How come he isnt using that on the master buss?
Hi!
i've been in Seb's studio and.....No..He just uses that monitors he bought on the asian market several years ago..
Tu sais si on peut commander le filter comme tu fais à 28:52 sur une devil fish ?
Free? future music earn money from these videos and their magazine, additionally it's not a lot of effort, my laptop has a line in (mic) and line out (headphones) in the same way that i record my tutorials by recording the master out..and that really is for free.
im still really really confused on the whole sidechain deal if anyone knows of any clips that explain it would help its killin me
Disliking because youtube wont stop recommending this video. It's like it never got the message and i wake up every morning to you holding that really bad 303 pillow.
are they his monitors hahaha legend.
I would like to see how he did the track 'Little Bug'... the synthwork on that one...
Sebastien, show us how Did You do the "Sunset" track it's great !
Very interesting but also confusing as he playing the bass first note is a F but appearS like a G on his arturia keyboard. Also if you look at his arturia setting you can see the tuning is not changed ....
Il est une telle personne réservée
Really cool costume 303!
Jesus, that mod-ed 303 is the nuts.
KINYO SW-6515 multimedia speaker
well done fm! :D
nice to see some videos using ableton
I want those pillows!!!! Where did he get them?
very smoos!
i like his way of working...know the basic and just play with everything intill it sounds right! haha
I liked the song @ 3:00 what is it called?
Cool setup!
Where did he buy those pillows??? Want them, too!!! :))
'Relative success' - look at noisias interview if you really want to learn something.
It will sound wrong on these. But it sounds wrong in the same way as your other records, it's good anywhere.
But I think he's got bigger loudspeaker out of the camera range.
i think they would be for reference.
I'd love to get my hands on a 303!
Wait.. does he really use those old skool computer speakers?
What is this term 'sychen'(?)?
I understand he's talking about something that creates or leaves space for low/similar frequencies elsewhere int mix.

sidechain
