  • The 5 line is a unique subway line. Out of all of the NYC subway lines, it has the most variations. Its most basic service pattern is a shuttle from Dyre Avenue to East 180 Street. The 5 operates as a shuttle during late evenings, nights, and early Sunday morning. During early evenings and weekends, it operates from Dyre Avenue to Bowling Green. On weekdays during the midday and early evening, it operates from Dyre Avenue to Flatbush Avenue.
During rush hour in the peak direction, the 5 operates express in the Bronx. Alternate 5 trains go to or from either Dyre Avenue or 238 Street/Nereid Avenue in the Bronx. Most 5 trains begin or terminate at Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn. A few 5 trains begin or terminate at Utica Avenue or New Lots Avenue. This is done to relieve congestion at Flatbush Avenue (also, there is direct access from the Livonia subway yard to New Lots Avenue).
In addition to having multiple terminals, the 5 (along with the D) is the only subway line that operates express in three boroughs. In this clip, the 5 train is operating from Utica Avenue to 238 Street.Nereid Avenue. The train left Utica Avenue 3 minutes before its scheduled departure time. That's why part of the beginning is cut off.
