Ken McNabb: Colt Starting (Part 2 of 7) - Preparing for the Halter

- This session is a continuation of a 7-part series on colt starting. In this session, we will build off of what we accomplished last week while horseback (getting the first touch), and start getting the colt ready for a halter.
To prepare the colt for a halter, I'll start by getting him focused and locked on to me, working similarly to when I was horseback in the last session. To work up to touching him from the ground, I'll do a lot of approach-and-retreat, and I'll keep reminding him of what he learned in the previous session. When the horse touches me, I'll release by backing away. If he leaves, I'll get his feet moving and remind him of his lesson to turn toward me. Once I can approach and touch him, I'll work on touching him with two hands, preparing him for the feel of the halter on his face.
A Few Keys Points to Remember:
- Stay calm and cautious, but not SNEAKY. Predators sneak, so sneaky behavior will only make the horse suspicious of you.
- Be aware of when the horse is stuck in a corner. You always want to give him a way out to keep yourself safe.
- Don't try to reach out and touch the horse, allow him to touch you. Back away when he chooses to touch you.
- Take the time it takes.
