The ending of Dogs has always been one of the most bone-chilling audio experiences in my life.
If the remix had ruined it, I'd never forgiven the people who made it.
    It did not ruin it.
Roger 's voice still sounds like he's both suffocating and drowning at the same time. The biggest difference was the last second guitar fade-out.

    • @chuffy438

i loved the remix but i don’t like how the ending of dogs actually sounded. it was definitely more massive and clearer sounding for the other instruments, but i really couldn’t hear the harmonized guitar part. I really do think that that guitar but is the best part of the ending and the remix kinda disappointed me there.

Pink Floyd’s level of importance in rock n' roll is unlimited. They are, perhaps after The Beatles and Kraftwerk, the most influential band in rock history. They've contributed so much, especially in their first three stages - Syd Barrett's era, the experimental fase trying to find its definitive sound and the Roger Waters' era -, that we fall short.

The whole idea of "the forgotten masterpiece" to me was always borderline insulting as no true Pink Floyd fan would ever forget this one. James Guthrie who remixed it has been working with the band since 1979 so he was perhaps uniquely placed to do this task. I've heard from people who followed the band live prior to Animals being released and they said they were disappointed when it initially was released purely from a sonic perspective as the tracks had sounded different live. The same people have said this new mix has changed all that and given it it's true intent. Like yourself it's one of my all time faves and I needed convincing, but I got there. the remix might now be the mix.

The versions they played live were never intended to sound that close to the originals. Gilmour’s solo during Pigs Three Different Ones was entirely different (no talk box) and the songs entire structure was changed. Sheep was probably closest to the Studio Version. Gilmour sang the entirety of Dogs besides the ending. Tons of improv in the solos.
They shouldn’t have complained, I’m jealous! I wish bands today performed their songs differently live, it becomes a much more memorable experience I bet.

I'm so happy you touched on animals. It kinda feels disappointing for me because people never have patience for floyd's more progressive records like animals. Obviously, Animals is still one of the more widely praised albums by Floyd, but not many people actively listen to most of their discography, so often, out of the big four, it's the most commonly casted out, which is ironic, because most of their diehard fans recognize it as the best Floyd album. the album, as other Floyd concept albums have been, is so thorough and cohesive as a story. my only problem with the Remix, is that the pig sounding key solo was somewhat botched. Other than that, it's pretty incredible.

I started listening to Floyd as a kid cause my father constantly played them in the car. At first I was more of the Wall guy, I guess because it was very theatrical, then I figured that Dark Side was their magnum opus, then I really started to appreciate Wish You Were Here, but at this point in my life, at 28, I find myself gravitating more and more towards Animals as their rawest, mos angry and emotional record. I think it's really underrated because of this raw sound, since Dark Side and WYWH have these gargantuant arrangements and soundscapes that still sound super HiFi. Gotta check out that remaster, sounds exciting.

Animals was probably the most ambitious album at its time. Maybe not sonically but certainly conceptually it is. Imagine releasing an anti-capitalist album based on Animal Farm in 1977. For any band (especially at the mainstream popularity of Pink Floyd), that would be career suicide especially when Red Scare propaganda was proliferating. The album is as relevant today as it was 40+ years ago. Glad the album is getting the much needed TLC it deserves.

I remember reading Animal Farm in high school and didn't get into the album until later on and I absolutely fell in love with it, the main concept of capitalism and how people in power take advantage of those around them to do what they want (as emphasized in the three main tracks "Dogs", "Pigs (Three Different Ones)" and "Sheep") is incredible and definitely has some of the band's best songwriting and undoubtedly one of their best records. Also, semi-fun fact in case nobody knows this is that the final show of this album's original tour back in 1977 actually inspired Roger Waters to start writing The Wall

The older verision mastering was clearly a black sheep in the discography. It felt like it didn't get the same amount of love as DSOTM or WYWH. I'm so glad that it finally happened, as it's definitely one of my favourite Pink Floyd albums. Thanks for the heads up, Anthony :)

I had never even considered that this album could use a remix until I heard that this remix was coming. But I am a full believer in modern remixes of these classic albums, this one is no exception. My only complaint is the lead guitar in Dogs lost a bit of its bite and actually feels like they used a bad tape transfer or something for that specific component. Otherwise it really sounds spectacular

My favorite Floyd album has fluctuated wildly since I discovered them from a commercial when I was about 5. This would have been around 96. They are by far my favorite band and no matter how drastically my music taste has changed through my life Pink Floyd has always stayed with me. All that being said, my original point was that through my 10s teens and twenties different parts of my life yielded a different Floyd album that I considered my favorite. From DSOTM to Wish to The Wall, even The Final Cut had a long time in the sun for me. But Animals was always the one that made me think the most. It’s always the one I came back to and found something new from it. It’s oppressive, it’s political, it’s angry but it’s also deep and gorgeous and ultimately optimistic. So after an inordinate amount of thought I finally came to the conclusion about 8 years ago that Animals is my favorite. I think it’s by far the most well put together and thought provoking piece of Pink Floyd’s music and I think I’m comfortable saying that it’s my number one for life now.

To be fair their list is a bit of a $hit show. Certainly they aren't keen on progressive rock as Genesis or King Crimson on that list, no Deep Purple either, but Mariah Carey's "The Emancipation of Mimi is... and higher up the list than Brothers In Arms, Ace Of Spades and Let's Get It On. Even Britney Spears' "Blackout" is higher up the list than David Bowie's "Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)." and White Stripes' "Elephant".

I told my friend once as a joke that people didn't like animals as much because they were pissed that there was only technically three songs but it's clearly the best album, the lyrics to dog alone could get you through life and it's supposed to be about police or something

    • @michellejackson1522
      @michellejackson1522 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Roger Waters develops the concept that people are grouped into three groups: fighters (dogs, middle-class), rulers (pigs, upper-class) and followers, bystanders (sheep, lower classes, working classes). Pigs come in "three different ones" because they, themselves, are not a single group. There are pigs who rule by violence, others who rule by cunning and others who rule by fitting into a previous system. Also pigs are "on the wing"
Considering this approach, the lyrics can be interpreted as such:
"Pigs On The Wing (part one)" - selfish people (you didn't care what happened to me and I didn't care what happened to you) cannot unite against the pigs who are flying high.
"Pigs On The Wing (part two)" - once you learn to unite (I care what happens to you and I know that you care for me), you feel reassured (a place to bury my bone) and you can stop living the never-ending aggressive brawl, you can enjoy some shelter from the pigs flying (and surely shitting from above).
"Dogs" is about all corporative mumble-jumble that is fed onto workers to force them to keep a grin in their faces while they toil for peanuts. The song strongly remembers me of motivational speech peddled at team-building meetings. The worker is expected to live in permanent stress, treating each coworker as a potential enemy. This is the classical "divide and conquer" strategy employed by the bourgeois to keep the working class in place. Making each worker a rival of his fellow, keeps them from noticing that it is the boss who makes them miserable. But in the end, no matter how good a dog you were, the system discards you when you cannot fight at top league any more. It is just then, when you are old and broken, that you realise that you were used while you believe you were "hot" and the "old farts" were just being lazy and useless.
"Pigs" is about the way politicians exercise their powers selfishly, seeking their own gain. The song mentions several instances of hypocrisy and cryptically alludes to real-world politicians (the "fucked-up old hag" was Margaret Thatcher, by then only famous for cancelling milk as a part of school meals, the "house-proud town mouse" was about Mary Whitehouse.
"Sheep” is about mediocre people, usually very religious, who don't want to get their hands dirty, just want to remain in the sidelines, avoiding trouble. These are the proverbial cannon fodder for wars, since they are the ones who often get elected the politicians who lead to war. The chief characteristic of “Sheep" is not their religiousness, but their alienation from decision-making and their near total ignorance of what is really going on
