    I feel the whole discussion of world accepting and world denying religions was very important. One rarely finds such frank discussion about this subject.

      I fully agree, this subject is not always, or never is exposed with such clarity, I like Mr. Arith's straightforwardness to do it in a correct way and leave open paths that lead us to rethink so many things.

    I've always been attracted to the "darker" aspects of spirituality. I put darker in parenthesis because I try to make no difference between left/right, bright/dark etc. They are just human biases and what is good to me is evil to the other and vice versa.
    Love how you mention this dualism too.
    I started out Asatruar but have become more and more animistic as I grow older so your videos ring a bell with me. I felt really attracted to the Norse pantheon but the thought of seeing Odin as just another "sky daddy" felt plain weird to me. I do believe in their existence but they just are. Like gravity. I feel much more connected and alive since I no longer seek "out there".

      Nordic literature of the middle ages brought forth greater awareness of the Æsir myth, discovery of ancient cuneiform tablets 200 years ago gave us knowledge of our oldest stories, and lessons passed from old Canaan to the modern western world largely gave us Abrahamism as we know it.
      Accessibility is a huge factor in the scope and size of what knowledge enters the collective mind. You could and should be the one to scribe it.

    I remember reading in one of ONAs publications decades ago the statement, "I know what it's like to be in prison and to be free" (paraphrased). At first I thought it meant to be a prisoner in prison/behind bars on some occasions and free/not in prison/on the streets on other occasions. I've since come to realise that they probably meant to be free while in prison by not betraying oneself in thought, word, or deed in submission to the jailer. That one retains sovereignty wherever one is.
    In that way we can prosper here while awaiting the day of release.

    "The arrogance of mankind always prevents the development of inner potential." Bingo. I do not agree that we are here as a punishment, however. That, too, seems to be a belief of the Abrahamic system. Being able to live, to enjoy, to appreciate the magic and wonder of creation, being able to create as a god, is a profound gift. We are here to learn how to become gods and to reflect that which created us. Furthermore, it has been my lifelong personal experience that my creator is infinitely forgiving as I bumble around making my mistakes and learning my lessons. Perhaps I am too life-embracing to be Thursatru?

    After a long illness that causes much suffering, the isolation from all I knew due to a transatlantic move and the loss of a career for which I underwent over a decade of rigorous education and training….my physical and psychological suffering opened me up to experiences that are beyond my ability to describe.
    I have had to traverse a Void in an out-of-body state, something which was FAR more painful (eviscerating) than anything I had had to endure so far.
    After this Void, in which my old Self died, I entered a long Dark Night of the Soul, during which I had to relearn “being.”
    After all this….one thing I can say is that EVERY soul is on its own pilgrimage and religions/beliefs/rituals appear to us as beacons in the dark. Most, if not all, are false beacons. It’s not until we accept the dark…stop flailing, crying, seeking, thrashing…and start listening to your own pure essence. No other being can do it for you! You can’t travel on another’s road! Our creator resides in everything and you’ll find the One beckoning you when you let go and surrender.

    it seems to me then...that Odinn himself was following the thursatru path. Considering what we know about him tells us he was a wanderer and he was always seeking knowledge. Which means he was aware of his own "physical" limitations as well, and he too was looking for a way to transcend.

      Thursatru actually comes from the current 218 philosophical background (check the author Ekortu, he wrotes several grimoires), as it is a "syncretic" tradition aiming to group the anti-cosmic aspects of different cultures ; for example: Qliphoth (Qabalah) and Cult of Qayin, Tiamat (Sumerian), Set (Ancient Egypt), Kali (Hinduism), and obviously Thursar for Norse mythology.

    This is the first time I've heard of Norse anti cosmic Satanism...
    I'm familiar with anti cosmic Satanism based off the Sitra Achra... do you feel there could be parallels in the Jewish Qabalah, like the Jewish tree of life/sefirot with Nordic concepts like Yggdrasil and if so what would you say the "norse sitra achra" is?? Does Yggdrasil have an opposite, an other side??

    thank you arith for another fascinating talk. i was going to ask you some questions. firstly, how can thursatru be anti aesir when the blood of the aesir is part giant in its heritage; surely this would prevent thursatru from being against the aesir? secondly, i was going to ask about lokism. how does this relate to thursatru, asatru and heathenry? i have read some of the classic texts, i was wondering whether the christian translators may have placed loki as a satan kind of figure and wondered whether this might be misleading? is lokism like a nordic version of satanism or is it something completely different? thank you.

    Man your perspective on Thursatru leaves a completely different vibe than the articles I've read by Thursatru practicers 😅 every article I've read by Thursatru practicers is very in denial of the fact that they take inspiration from Gnosticism and Satanism, with a lot of insistence that it's the tRuE religions/religious intent of our ancestors. I'm very in favor of people forging their own paths utilizing whatever inspires and feels correct to them so long as their not misrepresenting those paths, but all the writings on that front were filled with misrepresentation and outright lies about their sources.

    Can I conclude that followers of Thursatru seek for knowledge to escape reincarnation or any other means of staying in the created universe (heaven , valhalla, etc.) when they die? Thanks Arith for this elaborate summary and I follow your view that people should seek their own spiritual path and subsequent vessels or channels of communication.

    So, would the mystical branches from the main monotheistic religions (for example Kabbalah, Sufism, etc.) be world affirming or world denying, like their organized religion counterparts? I’m not too well versed in the topic, but it seems to me that mysticism, or at least some forms of it, aims at establishing some sort of symbiosis with the spiritual realm before death occurs, and not just in the aftermath as a reward of a life that has stuck to the rules of a set religion. Is this correct?

  • @arsumbris6392
    @arsumbris6392 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thursatru just sounds like LHP Asatru. The approach to deities like Hel resemble the Greek cults of Hecate, for example. It's reasonable to speculate there would have been people who practiced "sorcery" in ancient times, and contacted or "partnered" with forces that normal people would regarded as evil or "demonic". Obviously, none of those beliefs would have survived the arrival of Christianity. Snorri never would have told the story of someone who made pacts with a "Thurses".

    I think each one of us (including, obviously, ancient peoples, pagan or not) has his/hers own feelings about the surroundings. And some people just feel something is "off". Regarding material life, in the cosmic, three dimensional realm. Of course, ancient heathens didn't write books, so, I guess Gnosticism got the "full rights" to such initial approach, when it comes to pointing out the Archontic Cosmic Lie. But it's a perception that is simply there, in some spirits. This doesn't mean a person can't be a pagan and a gnostic anti-cosmic satanist at the same time. For sure in the past that's how many felt. Actually, in the past they most likely weren't very interested in labeling themselves in such a manner. Or any other. Funny example: the fact that a kid hates school, and doesn't accept its concept, doesn't mean he won't try having the most possible amount of awesome moments while being forced to stay there ;-D Even facing it as a defying challenge. Part of the fun, even.

    Just found your channel and thought tje title of this video was very interesting. I am part Native American, with English and some Scandinavian as well, and i consider myself a heathen. Been reading a lot on the subject. The fact Thursatru exists just shows how the medieval Christian writers inserted Judeo Christian interpretations of the Norse myths. Thursatru is an outcome imo of someone reading the Poetic Edda and taking it literally. Since I'm still kinda new to Heathenry i have difficulty shaking latent Christianity off of me, and im guilty of trying to appease the gods to obtain a "pagan" afterlife. It sounds silly, but it's something im mentally dealing with still. I found this video very interesting and i found the animism part fascinating as well.

    Maybe you didn't read Ekortu's books and so totally missed the parts on animism? Ekortu clearly talks about and even underlines the importance of animism within Thursatru as the spirits in nature have a huge roll within their sorcery. They believe that the 'troll' spirits are directly descendants of the thurses and that the 'troll' spirits are trapped in nature, and so being 'close' to us humans. Why do think Thursatruar give offerings to the tree spirits before they harvest (explained to be a strict tradition)? Why do you think they give offerings to the spirits of the woods when they enter the forest, or giving food and coins to the Tomte, or giving libation to the water spirits before fishing or collecting water, or give offerings to the gate-keeper when they enter cemeteries, etc... ANIMISM IS VERY IMPORTANT within Thursatru. Pro tip, read Ekortu's book Svartkonst and learn about the importance of animism within their path.

      I was wondering the same thing. I am half Hungarian so I know we also do the tree rituals. We have places we go, sacred groves of sorts. It is part of that anti- cosmic element . If you think about it, the way Christian people treat the Earth, it behooves us to do the opposite as Satanist.

    I don't know where I stand anymore. I think I fall in the category "agnostic atheist", but more wanting to be an agnostic theist but my scientific mind sometimes takes the reigns and says fuck it all. Then I watch freyia norling and I'm a believer again. I'm constantly here and there. Completely torn in half about it all.
    I can't be the only person who believes, but doesn't, it's not that I'm "just" spiritual, I do believe something is likely there, but I'm struggling with it... eh. Am I alone here?

    Trying to understand paganism :- in this physical world, there are people everywhere, who you might or might not have a good relationship/encounter with. If you want to avoid someone, you generally can. But there are also invisible 'people' here too, that also seem subject to anger, meanness etc, but you can't see them coming, or avoid upsetting them through say, ignorance - suddenly, the world is even more dodgy! So, my question is, were our ancestors time spent in trepidation, and making obesiences and sacrifices, rites etc, out of a fearful vulnerability? Thank you in anticipation of any replies.

    Hi Arith, thanks for the video. Just curious - did you have a chance to study/compare Hinduism to Nordic Religion? There are few similarities that I'm able to notice but I do want to know from a professional if it's true of if it's all in my head. Would appreciate it if there's a video/read that I can follow to learn more

      I have the same question about similarity. I did some digging around on Wikipedia and we do share some roots, but it was so long ago that it's not obvious how you ended up where you are and we ended up where we are. Apparently, our common ancestors seeded many different regional belief systems from the same proto-religion centered around three 'classes' and three main gods (of sky, land, and sea). I'd love to know more details than I was able to piece together, though!
      For example, did Thor have a net like Indra? How related are Mjölner and vajras? Perhaps you know this one - is there a primordial world tree in any of the stories of the sanātana dharma?

      @saranyamanivannan9677 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@teresaspicer4829 that's right, there are several lores that intersect and there's indeed a primordial tree of life called the "Kalpavriksha" - loosely translates to Tree of Eons (and I couldn't help but connect it to the timeline between 2 Ragnarok) but the epics are vast and dates much older, so I'm not quite sure. Would be happy to know, though

    From this video and your Rokatru video I'm left wondering if a path exists to engage and experience the paganism of my ancestors. You say that the knowledge available to us is so corrupted by medieval Christianity that we can't be sure what is true. You have also said that Western minds are so captured by our collective Christian consciousness that we can't grasp the principles of the old ways. Given that I can see why some would be attracted to an alacarte philosophy combining elements of gnosticism and Satanism. You are a gifted teacher and an acknowledged subject matter expert. I believe the beginning of the end for animism and true paganism began when man stepped outside of nature and left the hunter-gatherer lifestyle and entered into an agrarian one. And over the centuries he begin to rely less and less on nature to where he didn't need nature anymore. Or at least he felt that way. And along with that came cities in towns and the monotheistic religions we have today. Which are authoritarian hierarchical and aggressively expansionist. I seek to wipe that all away in my thinking and engage more on an indigenous level with shamanism. The Earth denying religions of brought us to the point where we have taken what we want from the earth and not given back. And now we find ourselves beginning to pay the price for our arrogance.
    It's impossible to describe God. All religions are just metaphor. It doesn't mean the spirits don't exist. It's just that we can't truly explain them. So good luck with that.
    Thanks for what you do.

    I loved the part about racism, asides from all of it of course. I had a chat with some people from the Vodou community and I find they are folkish, they are a closed group and do the exact opposite of what Asatru is trying to do, i.e the Troth and TAC. Spirit has no color. This is such a limited and ignorant view and I'm glad you mentioned it and dealth with it in the proper fashion. Racism has no pert in spirituality and is a 3D concept acceptable only to unenlightened and closed minds, minds that are focused on immediate surroundings instead of the bounty of enlightenment that the cosmos holds. Racism is pathetic.

    From my limited understanding I figured nationalism would happen in Paganism on a smaller scale, the community. That especially when times are hard you prioritize feeding your neighbors over feeding the world. You would defend your neighborhood and community before traveling miles to defend strangers. Not that you couldn't trade with strangers or would actively harm them, but you should support your friends and help with their problems first.

    • @NevisYsbryd

You have those that agree with John Locke: everyone is born good in nature basically, you have those who agree with Thomas Hobbes: everyone is born evil in nature, and those who agree with Voltaire: Everything is born but it is its environment that shapes it in nature. I'd have to say that it's all subjective. All babies are born unknowing and therefore "innocent". All babies have instincts to be loved and nurtured. However not all babies have the same threshold to endure pain, frustration or discontentment. These differences vary with each individual child and these differences create differing individual personalities as that child ages and has to encounter those things within their external environment...Also not all children are born with the same core personality traits and those traits emerge in differing ways within all of us. We are all connected because we are all the same species and come from the same source of consciousness but we are also all individuals and all unique in our own way as well. That's what I believe anyway.

      The gods were not born with the knowledge of all things. The Thursar, however, who originated from a primordial acosmic existence, had vastly more knowledge and wisdom, being far older than the gods. Odin sought out Mimir's well for knowledge (Mimir being a Thurs), and made a sacrifice to receive knowledge. In Thursatru, it is seen that humans can receive divine knowledge by aligning ourselves with the Thursar and the powers of primordial chaos. This primordial chaos (ginnungagap) is seen as the source of the acosmic (later anticosmic) powers and the knowledge contained within.

    • @krysinski2092
      @krysinski2092 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If by path you mean he worked with giants in the in the way of Thursatru practitioners, then no, the sagas and eddas wouldn't support this literally. It is evident that he and other gods sought out and learned from the giants from time to time, though. This can seem to be in conflict with their interests from a dualistic perspective, but a critical issue lies in the fact that much of our knowledge of the gods and giants and their nature comes to us second hand from dualistic post-christian sources. If you want the best answer to your question, you could ask Odin yourself.

    I’m not into anti cosmic Satanism but I’m very informed on Gnosticism and the adversary. It’s not a “Christian” pov but I understand sometimes secular dating puts things in timelines. It includes Ophite (serpent) Gnostics (nothing to do with COS religion which is atheistic and not theistic) which is animistic in nature. The Sethian Gnostics were much more ab hating this human form than the Valentinians. Overall it was a non dogmatic mystical teaching bc they believed Jesus did not exist (only as celestial flesh). The Nag Hammadi breaks it down. So what I’m gathering here (which is fantastic by the way) is Thursatru is equivalent to Sethians in the Gnostic cosmology and the Rokathru is akin to Valentinian which don’t regard this world as “evil” or more accurately ONLY chaotic, really. I’m a follower of Gnosticism so I’d be considered on the cusp of both Thusatru and Rokathru 😅 to conclude the Gnostic Jesus asserts; the kingdom is within you. Now that is akin to the Monad or the unseen god and not the demiurge (YHVH in particular Torah/Genesis accounts) but passages link Lucifer to Christ in the Bible so in essence also encompassing the true source god.
