To hell with critics. I've enjoyed the Hollies music for 50yrs. Allen Clarke's vocals on "The Air that I Breathe" & "He Ain't Heavy" are filled with feeling, emotion, and Talent. I also believe that Tony Hicks never got the respect he deserved for his great guitar work. The Hollies music will always be legendary for me.
Amazing band, amazing lead singer, amazing drummer, amazing lead guitarist. Fantastic live band and they were better than nearly all bands around in the 60s live! Above all...timeless amazing music!!
Alan Clarke just released a new album (April, 2023, or thereabouts). Always the humble gentleman, he had no fanfare about its release. I think he even partnered with Graham Nash for it! The video notes they were "no competition with the Rolling Stones for r n b covers"...duh! Because their heroes were: THE EVERLY BROTHERS!!! They aimed for a British Everly Brothers sound... (Nothing Raunchy...There! I said it!)
Not just that, after being swamped by the British Invasion, the Everlies came to England and teamed up with the Hollies for the album Two Yanks In England, featuring some of the original songs the Hollies wrote.@@rmp7400
I Can't Let Go and Look Through any Window we're part of some of the great songs the Hollies played live. I always thought of them as a great band that had their act together. The harmonic balance and unique style was captivating.
Saw the Hollies at Southend a couple of weeks ago. A fantastic show. Bobby Elliott - superb drumming. Tony Hicks - wonderful guitar work. (He looks so young - whatever he's taking I want some!) Ray Stiles showed everyone how to really play bass. Fantastic harmonies, fantastic performance. Thanks for keeping the music alive.
Great harmonies and fabulous melodies, the lyrics were also very fitting to the time and the melody. Loved the Hollies and I can recall liking everything that they did at the time. Thanks for this, excellent story of a fantastic band.

I would say the Hollies are highly rated and their music widely popular, enjoyed and respected by their peers and fans all around the world. So how does that translate into being, "under rated"?
Well I saw them live in about 2018 in Australia and they are still touring. They just change the line up as needed. Tony Hicks was still in the band. They sounded just like I remembered from the 60's. In Australia we were fortunate to get a lot of British artists played on radio so we were already fully aware of them and their music is still as popular today as always. Not bad when you think of all the other groups that have come and gone but the Hollies just keep on.
Anyone wondering... The Hollies are still touring and still performing, I have tickets to see them in just over two weeks time at The Sage in Gateshead , this will be the third time I've been there to see them in the last few years. In addition about 5 days from now Nash is performing solo at the same venue with what seems to be part talking and part music telling the story of his life.
I love The Hollies, they are one of my absolutely favorites bands from the 60s. Although they were very great musicians and songwriters, I think their major problem was that they were not as innovative like other bands from the same period. So when the 60s ended and the musical movement they were originally part ended too, they started to decline. Still they manage to make a few great hits in the 70s. Long live to The Hollies
One of the few bands where all of the members from the '60's are still alive - Allan Clarke, Graham Nash (or Terry Sylvester), Bernie Calvert, Tony Hicks, and Bobby Elliot.
At the root of it all, the Hollies IS Allan Clarke's and Graham Nash's group. It ALL started with them. What "happened" to the group was...time. Eventually, Bernie Calvert and Terry Sylvester left the group, being replaced by a rotation of musicians...many of them quite good. Graham Nash returned in 1983, and upon his leaving again, he was replaced by Alan Coates, a brilliant musician and very capable singer. By 2001, Clarke stepped down as lead vocalist. He was replaced by Carl Wayne, formerly of The Move, an embryonic version of what would become the Electric Light Orchestra. When Carl Wayne died, Alan Coates eventually left too, after almost 21 years with the group. Both were replaced by new faces that could hit the notes, but little else. Their last two studio albums were faceless, generic outings...at best. They've since put recording new material behind them, concentrating on the live act which keeps European concert attendees happy.
Saw the original lineup with Graham Nash back in the 60s then a later incarnation although still with Alan Clarke. A great band with some inventive lead playing by Tony Hicks.
Work with facts, Their Biggest Hits came after Graham Nash left. Give the trio of Clarke/ Hicks/Sylvester their due. You can't find Harmony like that anymore. He Ain't Heavy and The Air That I Breathe are Classics. Fact not opinionated.

I was around 17 living in South Africa when they really hit the music scene. I was then dating someone who would later be my wife. Amazing group with a distinctive sound.
Seems like Long Cool Woman keeps resurfacing in short videos on tik tok. Although I never had a keen intrest in bands this band’s hits are memerable in the 70’s when i was attending High School and our Art teachers had an FM radio playing in the back ground and Cool Woman in a black dress would play, radically nostalgic sound that stuck with me like old peanut butter that get stuck to the roof inside my mouth. Although i could never quite articulatr the words being sung till recently when I read and followed along some one’s contribution on You Tube. Anyway thank you for sharing details of the Hollies.
I saw the hollies on a package tour at Manchester odeon wait for this with small faces and Roy Orbison on the same bill they where all great for me especially small faces I also think the hollies version of Springsteen's sandy is one of there best even better than the bosses great days
there were a lot of girls named Carrie Anne who were born in the mid sixties...if anything, I believe that is one of The Hollie's great legacies....having a generation of girls named after your song..
Never have they joined the 60s explosion tours. They have always toured on their own and still continue to do so today. Which tells you they are still relevant and have a Big fan basis.
Without Nash they just weren't as good. Long Cool Woman was my favorite back in the day. I thought at the time, this had taken them to a new level, as good as anyone else was doing!
The drummers son used to play drums with a group called Bushfinder General playing regularly at the Mayflower club in Liverpool in the 80's. Had Bushfinder General stayed together they would have been a force to be reconed with. I remember spending time with the group as they laid down their first and only demo tape my oldest brother used to do the sound and lighting for them and I actually had a small part on one of their songs which was a clapping solo. The best song they did in my opinion was called All or nothing. Anyway jut a short bit of info.
Sorry, you are completely mistaken. Allan Clarke was a schoolmate of Graham Nash and after having written many great hits with The Hollies he started Crosby Stills NASH in 1967/68. Please do your homework first.🎸
Absolutely right, they were school mate and when Graham went to the states he met up with Crosby & Stills and they started the band together, for me I wish he had stayed with the Hollies

I saw the Hollies in '66...opening act for Herman's Hermits. The Hollies were going to tour America three years ago. Then...Covid cancelled everything.
I listened to the radio when I was pregnant not knowing what to name my daughter if I had a daughter. I struggled with a name and couldn’t think of any I liked, then the song Carrie Anne came on. I instantly said That’s her name! Indeed I had a daughter and named her CariAnn.
Absolutely the best in there day, yes i know the Beatles and Stones were another level, but for me i could relate to them more, i am 79 now and went to see them at Cliffs pavilion in Southend last year, it was fantastic the place was rammed, ok all silver tops were there, but we all remember how good they were, unfortunately only Tony and Bobby left but they still had that fantastic sound

i was a committee member to a social club my job was to book bands for Saturday night entertainment the Hollies were regular,,,, Searchers,,, i remember helping carry in there equipment from a battered old van ,, i then locked up the club ,, they went off into town to get something to eat yeah we had all the top bands long before they were famous ,,,,,,Edwin John
Some songs in the seventies where hits but only in the Netherlands like I'm down, the day that curly Billy shot down Crazy Sam McGee, man without a heart and the obscure song The Baby. All great songs ( about 1972- 1975) They are all on the CD the Dutch Collection ( with DVD )
Too young to be Married went to no 1 in Australia and New Zealand.. great song but for some reason didn't do much anywhere else and no mention of that song here.
The Hollies were good. However, they did lack the depth of the Beatles (no insult; no one did), nor did they demonstrate the capacity for artistic growth.
The Hollies, in their current guise, are still touring. I've got tickets to see them in Sept 23. Americans will pretend to, but will never, ever understand 60's Brit Pop. They just see Austin Powers.

I was a session musician/singer and worked with the Hollies in the mid 1980s - the record producer passed the news on to me.
I loved the honesty and conviction in the singing of lead vocalist Allen Clarke , expressed both vocally and visually .
No disrespect to other members but Alan could have led any collection of musicians and it would still have been the Hollies.

'He Ain't Heavy' was a mountain of a recording! Right up there with 'What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted' by Jimmy Ruffin.
It was Bobby Elliot, not Don Rathbone, who had played in the Dolphins along with Tony Hicks and future Hollies bassist, Bernie Calvert.

Some songs in the seventies where hits but only in the Netherlands like I'm down, the day that curly Billy shot down Crazy Sam McGee, man without a heart and the obscure song The Baby. All great songs ( about 1972- 1975) They are all on the CD the Dutch Collection ( with DVD )

Too young to be Married went to no 1 in Australia and New Zealand.. great song but for some reason didn't do much anywhere else and no mention of that song here.

The Hollies were good. However, they did lack the depth of the Beatles (no insult; no one did), nor did they demonstrate the capacity for artistic growth.
You pronounced "Midas" wrong...it is pronounced "my-dus", not the way you say it. "King Midas In Reverse" is one of their best.
The Hollies, in their current guise, are still touring. I've got tickets to see them in Sept 23. Americans will pretend to, but will never, ever understand 60's Brit Pop. They just see Austin Powers.
