Quite a coincidence this is uploaded 10 years to the day since 3254 last saw steam. While it's a shame she'll likely never run again, she still was a great part of my childhood that even appeared in a short lived tv show by the name of extreme trains.
Not to even mention the absolutely iconic whistle on her
7:37 no way. NO WAY!! Oh my God its that whistle i know!!! I remember that whistle a lot, especially as a kid when i was watching Thomas and the Magic Railroad
It’s quite a shame that Canadian National 3254 isn’t in service anymore. We can still hope that one day in the not too distance future it would return back to operation. It’s famous CN 5 Chime Step-Top Whistle is still being used in many pieces of media to this day.
If anyone would buy this loco I hope I can think of a few possibilities

Unfortunately with 3254 she suffered a substantial crash in the 1940s when she plowed head on into another train. CN was able to rebuild her to her former glory but the chassis was bent and twisted out of shape. They were able to straighten the locomotive out and it ran for quite a career after that. Unfortunately due to the nature of her steel and the heat, weight and continued use. The locomotive’s chassis began returning to its warped state until in the late 2000’s and early 2010’s she started to quite literally rattle herself to pieces during trips. Steamtown decided for the safety of the operators and the locomotive itself, it should be put on permanent display where it sits majestically to this day. But not to worry, they’re currently fixing up CN 3377 her sister locomotive for use as on of the the excursion trains. Safe to say 3254 will probably never grace the tracks again sadly.
@@iangraham6887 I know. It would’ve been great if someone can fixed the frame of the locomotive, which it had since the crash in the 1940s.
@@nathancorcoran5347 I have wondered that too, but as I understand it the more you bend and twist steel the higher the chances of introducing voids and cracks into the grain of the steel. I do hope that’s not the case and that someone would try it, but as I also understand it, there were other problems with the locomotive and tender that need to be addressed as well before it’s truly rail worthy once again.
@@iangraham6887 Exactly, I really like the CN 5 Chime Step-Top whistle that it had around the 1980s. And it now is used in so many pieces of media over the years, all the way to this day. Even though it’s not in operation anymore.
My father designed that whistle when he was assistant mechanical engineer for Canadian National's Great Lakes Region. He had a friend who was the organist at St. George"s Anglican Church in Toronto. They went in and played 5 part harmonics on the organ until they found the sound they liked. Then measured the length of the pipes to determine the length of the five chambers of the one piece casting of the whistle bell (top). A prototype was made at the Stratford Ontario shops, and a production contract awarded to the McAvity Foundry in St. John New Brunswick. Consequently ot became known as the "Atlantic" whistle.
Amazing! Thanks for the info!

Honestly I almost cried when I finished watching this video, I hope that in this decade the 3254 will still work again.
I don't think she will, but her sister is in the roundhouse now, so we'll have another Mikado running.
But I'm still hoping to restore it by the last year of this decade (2029) and the S-1-b sisters are vaping together again.
@ottodantaslemos5784 well never say never
Fun Fact: 3254 out of tune step top whistle was used in a WHOLE bunch of animated media and some shows
Very nice one, Luke. did watch your video on my friends live stream.
Amazing as always
3254 deserves to go to a good home somewhere else in the future.
Yeah, back to Canada where she belongs 🇨🇦
Awesome job Luke!
Thanks Zane!
I'm so excited to see this video
Me too!
I’m going to miss 3254’s (CURRENT) 5 chime whistle 14:16
Yeah me too

Wow that was very good video of 3254, i hope it will return in the future but the restoration of B&M 3713 is going very slow.
3377 is going to carry the torch of 3254. The Mikado's legacy is still alive!
I think 3254's career might be done for, I was shared a FB post earlier today revealing that they've moved 3377 into the shops and are evaluating her boiler. Though at the same time? I'm excited for that since Steamtown will still have an operating CN Mikado, and not to mention 3377 was part of the original collection.
Yeah, at the time Steamtown’s website said that 30 to 54 was a candidate for a restoration. I understand now that she’ll likely never run again, but never say never. Nobody thought that a Big Boy could be restored.
@@TrainGuruindeed. Wish steamtown could change hands w all the restorations w fmw
It will be nice when her frame is fixed and the cab is centered correctly

7:38 I Love CN 3254’s Out of Tune Whistle. The Whistle is So Popular
Every time I hear that whistle, i always think of large and powerful steam locomotives pulling high speed express trains
@@adventuresofamtrakcascades301For me, I always think of a steam locomotive from the 1880s
I can imagine seeing locomotive 3254 in Durand Michigan someday in the future.
I'll restore 3254.
Best of luck to you, and I hope you’ll assemble the best people you can find.
I was born four years before CN 3254 was taken out of service. But sadly, I didn't have a chance to see it in operation.
Who here misses 3254's old whistle?
✋

Did you know that CN 3254 appeared in some extreme trains episodes?
I did see an episode a long time ago. I can't remember which episode it was.
@@TrainGuruit appeared in Amtrak empire builder and the circus train episodes
I think 3254 is still too sad about what happened in 2012
Poor CN 3254. I hope it will return to steam in the not too distant future

@@TrainGuru np Bro
Love if BR&W, a&a, Canadian RR museum, or Bel Del river RR bought this locomotive.
That would be cool, but I think Steamtown would be too stubborn to let the engine go. It would be nice to see her frame fixed.
@@TrainGuru in my opinion it would be better if NPS cut ties and let Steamtown be an ACTUAL railroad museum and tourist attraction. FMW has better restoration these days.
@@TrainGuru also 3254 was NEVER original Steamtown owned. 3377 was. 3254 was DLW 1271 after she was traded for 1278.
@@nicholasmedovich6729 I feel the same way, I feel like the museum could accomplish more when not being owned by the NPS. However, there would have to be a lot of economical implications to do so, but if there's I way, they better take it.
@@regularguy7266 indeed.
Such a bummer I never got to see 3254 in operation. Despite it most likely never running again, I'm still holding on to hope for her.
I also heard that her 3377 is potential being studied for possible restoration.
That's true.
There is also a possible restoration for CN 3377
Correct.

I'll get to 261...
👍
Perhaps 3254’s condition wouldn’t be as bad nor would some of the problems been as bad if CN fixed the frame
Agreed.
I wholeheartedly agree.
I guess there’s no place good enough to operate this magnificent Ironhorse
Steamtown was the best at the time. But it’ll be a very long time before she ever runs again.
@@TrainGuru I see
@TrainGuru this is all completely their fault. If they actually did proper repairs to the locomotive routinely, (in other words, replaced her damaged frame from 1941), bet 3254 would have either lasted a little longer or still operate today
2317 is not after 3713. They did a feasibility study on the engine and found it to be in worse condition than they thought. 3377 will probably be after 3713
Did not know that. Thanks for the update!
@@TrainGuru Your welcome
Then in that case 2317 might never run again?
It's not impossible, but a lot of work will need to be done.
@@TrainGuru lets hope the best for that 4-6-2
Happily , Steamtown is considering Restoring the other CN S-1 at steamtown Which is 3377. So We might see another CN 2-8-2 running at steamtown in the future. Here's some evidenceen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_National_3377
Also 3377 Is an S-1d And not a S-1b Like 3254 is. This is just for anyone who is wondering
Yeah. That’ll be interesting even she is up and running.
@@TrainGuru 3377s whistle was last used around 1998 IIRC
@@nicholasmedovich6729 on 3254?
@@nascarfan8833 yes. Check out Steamtown 1998 doubleheader. Very different and deeper 5 chime whistle.
