Elaine Paige's version is good, if you like that sort of belting; Julie Covington is better - magic, captures the spirit of Eva Peron with subltety and emotion. And it reminds me of 1979 and a very hard time in my life when this song helped me through.

Many have recorded their versions but nobody has been able to match Covington in terms of clarity and tone and in putting power into the delivery while retaining the softness and sense of vulnerability that was required.

Way way back as a teenager I would listen to the radio as I fell asleep. One night, this song woke me from a deep slumber and it moved me to tears. Almost 50 years later, I listen to this, the best rendition, and yes it still moves me to tears as does Peter, Paul and Mary singing Puff The Magic Dragon :) Silly old sentimetal fool that I are :)
I’m a sentimental fool as well. How much has Evita affected me? Can’t measure it. Not the only musical to upend me. South Pacific when I was very young. Camelot. West Side Story. Jesus Christ Super Star. My life has a sound track. And many people can sing along.

Even after 45 years of first hearing this being sung by Julie Covington and hearing others sing it since, hers is the version that I always go back to and it still brings a tear to my eyes, it is so soul searching the way her voice puts so much feeling into that Wonderful song.
I remember her in the "Rock Follies" TV series but it was singing Don't cry for me Argentina that really showcased her amazing voice..

Julie Covington has one the most amazing and beautiful voices of all time. This song broke all of the written rules when it was released, and in any parallel universe, it would never have been a hit. However, the song was so incredibly well interpreted and performed by Julie that it couldn't help being the success that it was. Thank you for posting this. It brings back some wonderful memories.

She was privileged to introduce the world to this song,thus the musical Evita became a household name. The simple emotion in her delicate voice growing in force then returning to the fragility near to the end, fantastic!

She didn't want to do the song and Andrew Loyd Webber said himself that Nicole's version was his absolute favorite. So we can have whatever opinion as such- but what you said doesn't change what I posted.
Anybody can listen to both and see that Nicole is far more powerful, As for Covington, she REFUSED to sing it live and also as a single. So sans a perfect studio recording in orchestra etc- Covington couldn't do it.

In 1977 I was 9 years old and this was one of the first records I ever bought. To me there will never be a better rendition of this beautiful song. The purity of Julie's vocals has and never will be surpassed. Madonna can only dream...

I was only introduced to this version a couple of weeks ago and OMG, it makes all the other versions pale in comparison. Julie's ennunciation is perfect, her tone penetrates to your soul, and her emotional accents are incredibly authentic. And as for those soaring notes of her's they just seem that they could go on for ever. Paige, Lupone are good, Karen Carpenter also did a great version but this is just total perfection.
I was fortunate to hear this as a child. I have scoured the Internet land for it! As you say, all other performers pale in comparison. ❤️❤️

@@doommonger7784 absolutely not!, julie covington is not in karens class at all, just so you know, i am a tenor,who appeared on americas got talent, in 2012, prepared for the metropolitan opera, for almost 3 years, and put on many concerts in seattle!!!, and i know a great voice when i hear one!!!!!!!! when karen carpenter would sing, she could actually make you feel the song she was singing!. no other female singer sang with so much feeling and emotion!!!!!! karen was very special!!! and i am not a fanboy!!! im sure millions of people would agree with me.

I was 18 when I first heard this. I'm 62 next week. Thanks in advance. It's only after 44 years that I've read the words on this site. I'm guilty of not knowing the story of Evita. However, the determination of anyone who strives to change their life, preferable through hard work and education, is not something we see enough of in Britain. (That's the UNITED KINGDOM) in case any of Wee Jimmy Crannies supporters are getting someone to read this for them.

The aweful accident of the two Jumbo's at Tenerife Airport...How many passengers had this song in their heads the moment they died? Probably a couple of them. And Guy and doll's You're my world...when I hear these songs I must think of this great tragedy. They will always be attached to it.

It is definitely the best rendition of this song I have ever heard. The first time I heard it, I thought it amazing. It had just come out, in 1976, and it was on the juke box, in the Scarborough Pub, on Armley Road, Armley Leeds. Now long gone and demolished. But every time I hear it, it brings back memories of the great people, and times in there. This version, has lost nothing of its charm and wonderful voice of Julie over the years since !!!!!!

I first encountered Julie Covington when I saw her on stage in Godspell (with David Essex and Jeremy Irons). Thought she was superb then and still do. Hers is definitely the version of this song that does it for me.
