Diagnosing the Detroit Diesel 471

  • In this video Adrian and I teardown the Detroit Diesel from Renko to find the source of the oil leak, which ends up to be leaking wrist pin / gudgeon pin seals. While the engine is out we also add an air compressor along with several other improvements to make the most of the opportunity.
    This particular leak allows oil to flow up through the conrods, along the wrist pins then out the sides of the piston. It then travels through the liner ports and into the airbox which should only have fresh air and exhaust in it. The oil will then leak out through the airbox drains into the catch can and/ or out the exhaust pipe.

    I probably should have explained a bit about how these Detroit Diesel engines work any why the gudeon pins need to be sealed. Because Detroits are a 2 stroke motor there is an airbox between the combustion chamber and the sump. The bottom rings on the piston separate the airbox and the sump, the top rings separate the airbox from the combustion chamber. Without the gudgeon pin seals oil would go into the airbox, not drain back down into the sump. Oil in the airbox can go into the cylinder and be burnt, out the airbox drains or straight out the exhaust pipe as a liquid. In my case I was getting all symptoms. This video explains more th-cam.com/video/Xa2x5vrie-o/w-d-xo.html

    This video/tutorial has to rank in my mind as one of the best most instructive lessons I have ever watched. Adrian is obviously at the top of his trade and, respectfully, no bells and whistles, just solid honest facts from knowledge and experience. It never ceases to amaze me the lengths some “shady” characters will go to in order to avoid doing the job the right way. Many years ago,,, I was fired from a garage in the UK because I found a crack in the cylinder head ( combustion chamber) on a customer car that they had bought from the garage workshop i worked for and I had refused to fill the crack with araldite glue. No wonder the motor trade attracts so much cynicism. In this video, Adrian not only points out the issue but then explains why it should be done correctly. Great info.

      Thanks Todd, glad you liked the video and good on you for refusing to do the dodgy fix. As you say, things like that are what give the general public a very suspicious view of mechanics.

Heelers have a huge amount of energy, bordering on insane and they never give up.

    Adrians a pure petrol head, nice to see knowledgeable and skilled ppl. A relief actually. Glad you decided to tear the engine apart again. Its gonna run better and probably forever now that the errors have been corrected. I really am bummed, that all the prior effort of building that engine was, well... shoddy. Man the cam lobes, the effen bolt in the bottom of the pan, and oh wow the pistons and wrist pins, then the connecting rods at their limits. My gosh that engine was gonna fail way sooner than it should. Gosh Stu, not an easy position to be in. I hope it all gets sorted financially with as little pain as possible.

    Having said that, not knowing everything about something is not a reason to not work on it, if you take the time to learn what you don't know. However, learning on someone else's equipment and charging them for it while doing shoddy work (oil pump bolt in the oil pan, not tightening the roller parts to specs, etc.) is reprehensible. Having that engine stop working while offshore and putting lives at risk is beyond the unthinkable. The previous rebuild should be refunded. Period.

    In my years of dealing with 71 series Engines, I found that a good shop is worth their weight in gold! We had a problem child Inline 6-71 Generator Engine that was out so much I swear I could have done it with my eyes closed. Finally we tried a different shop. This new shop looked a lot like this one and man they new those Detroit's inside and out! As a rule, if I walk into a shop and it looks like you can eat off the the floor, I'm worried. Nothing wrong with a "clean" shop but when one spends more hours cleaning rather than working it worries me. As for the first shop, I would be having a long talk with them and they would be paying for parts! Good for you that you got to find a shop like this one and I hope you got to really pick his brain about any "quirks" that this series have so in the future you will be in a better position to do some of the work yourself! Thanks for another GREAT Video!!!!

    Thankfully they are in the past and I can just remember the good times.
    Your friend Adrian is a great mechanic!

    As a mechanic Stu, I found that so many small things we take for granted can really bring us undone, It's nice to see a pro engineer showing us the casual mechanics of how every engine has its differences, Thanks Stu and Adrian, I always enjoy learning from the best. Cheers, Sam. p/s Dive Master next.

    That Blue healer is too cute ! We have one and he loves to play ball too . It's either play ball , or , chew on me and listen to the funny sounds I make . Smartest and most loyal dog we ever had . I was a bit surprised at the oil pump bolt laying in the oil pan . I never saw that before . LOL

    Blokes- We always used a Golf Ball to smack the wrist pin lock into pace on the 71's. No problems, no worries. Cheap and soft , works well. Good job diagnosing.

    Good timing on the rebuild. Yup, if you haven't had a reverse start on Jimmy you have never driven one. Freaked me right out the first time. Smoke pouring out the air cleaner. Haa. Daisy is such a sweetie. I gave been seeing these t-shirts on Facebook lately. Makes me think of you Stu. It says " Yeah, I talk to chickens. What of it". So wish I could get you one. Lol.

    Adrian is a very good natured and wise man in the ways of Detroit's. Easy to see he knows his stuff and likes to share his knowledge. It would be interesting to hear the outcome of any conversation you have with the manager of the shop that did the original rebuild. The video evidence is pretty compelling, they didn't get it right and should make a contribution towards this repair.
    Also, I hear bush turkey makes an excellent holiday dinner.

    Hi, I am a retired diesel mechanic from North Carolina. I really enjoy watching your videos, especially the ones about detroit diesels. I have heard that if you don't have the kent-Moore tool to seat the wrist pin seal, a golf ball will work. Keep up the good work!

  • @normanboyes4983
    @normanboyes4983 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Stu that video was an education. The really good thing (apart from tapping into Adrian’s expertise) is that you were not wasting your time in pulling the engine and transporting it ashore.
    Some good saves there anodes, oil pump securing bolts, cam followers(?) damaged pistons and of course the small end bushes and the small end (wrist pin) sealing discs.
    At least you are now better placed for a leak free engine, reduced oil consumption and with a fair wind - longer engine life.
    Bummer about the $$ but gotta get it right come what may.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Getting the old screamon demons to stop leaking oil is going to break you but there will be many videos of mechanic work we will enjoy watching you perform through the future.... I suggest 1. Drink the beer 2. Enjoy the boat C. Wear earplugs and wipe up the oil...

    Thoroughly enjoyed seeing the Detroit getting fixed. My kudos to your friend Adrian. Also enjoyed “bird time”. If my10th and last dog (a killer Cairn terrier) goes before me, I’m going to get a few chickens. Back to the motor though, having been a machinist and my own mechanic for the the previous 40 -50 years, I feel you are getting set up for long lived success. That is a great thing as I enjoy the fishing trips, the diving and exploring also. Keep it up.
