I completely agree that I feel safer camping in the woods than I do in cities. I'm much more concerned about people. I'm here in the US so I'm always armed in case I need to defend myself, but I stay out of situations where I need to defend myself and that's the best solution. Thanks for a great video.
Picking a safe camp site. Before choosing a ground check the trash cans, if the cans are full of beer or liquor containers it's a sign the campground maybe used by locals for partying. Look on the ground for spent gun cartages, you don't want drunks shooting in the middle of the night. If possible talk to local Police Officers, ask where there is a safe place to camp. They have to deal with AH's in campgrounds and will give you good information, sometimes even camping in their yard.

Good idea for you would be to park your motorcycle facing the exit. This way if you have to leave quick you don’t have to start by backpedaling your heavy bike.

I am severely jealous of the trip you’re taking! My dog and l did a 27 state trip and some of the best memories of my life. Correction for having a gun. Most handguns holding less than 10 rounds or revolver is legal across all 50 states. While you may not be able to have it loaded on you or the bike, a campground becomes a temporary domicile and is seen as your home and you can legally have it loaded in your tent. I personally carry a gun when out in any areas that will not have an emergency services response like when out camping, because politics aside it is an ultimate equalizer if you know how to use one!
I stand corrected! I've had a few people bring me up to speed on this....but yes in my case, not being able to use one would make it both useless and dangerous. My satellite phone has an SOS function that tracks my live location and sends it to the nearest emergency services - that, with the addition of my bear spray & air horn helps me to feel safe.
@Lunch Cutter Productions I have to say as well, even being a ‘gun totin American’ I still carry personal pepper spray because shown in police stats it’s more effective than a taser. Combined with I’d rather not shoot a stray scared and aggressive dog and shooting a person is something I hope never to have to do. Seriously though pepper sprays are usually seen as something “as a deterrent for women to carry” but that’s all BS, it is very underrated in its personal defensive capabilities!
I think I'd be more inclined to use a rock than a knife too! I don't think we're allowed bear spray in the UK but an airhorn in the face and a rock to the temple would deffo do the trick. Some really excellent, well thought out ideas in this vid. Enjoy the rest of your trip, looks like great fun!

I had coyotes barking (not a lonesome howl) at me all night outside Ajo, Arizona. 20 feet away in the dark and very unhappy. Started my bike and hit the horn to scare them away.
Great and valuable video for motorcyclists. I already use most of the tips mentioned but I learned a few new ones so thanks for those! If I might mention a few that were not covered. 1) Dental First Aid Kit - Encountering dental problems on the road can be trip ending so I include one of these in my Medical First Aid Kit. The items in the kit will help you until you get in to see a dentist. 2) Fire Extinguisher - I have a portable bottle of foam type fire extinguisher primarily for camping but you never know if you might need it for other reasons. 3) Emergency Pouch - I put a small pouch in my Riding Jacket (in addition to my Garmin In-Reach Mini) that contains a micro flashlight, micro leatherman tool, waterproof matches, whistle, powerbar, etc. in case I get separated from and can't get to my bike in a crash. 4) Motorcycle Cover - If I'm going to be away and out of sight of my bike, I'll put my Half Cover over the bike. It covers the upper half of the bike and all my camping equipment. Out of sight and out of mind will keep prying eyes away and honest people honest. I don't think you can anticipate everything that might happen to you on and off your motorcycle on a trip but your 3 P's is good advice anytime, anywhere. But never hide anything in your helmet lining it could damage the lining/your head if it slips free during a crash. As for riding in Canada it scares me a bit because of the distances between places you can get help if you need it. I would need to feel much more confident in my mechanical abilities
It's not illegal to carry a gun in America. Different states have different regulations on it. Just research before you leave. You can protect yourself if need be.
It is kinda sad that woman feel unsafe around men! I understand why but it is a shame non-the -less. As an occasional male solo camper I worry about punctures (no puncture repair) and the weather. Mostly I get to feeling a bit self conscientious being by myself, particularly in a busy touristy area! Great advice, thanks
Yeah it sucks, but important to be aware of any potential danger and mitigate as much as possible. I never had any issues in the 6 months I was on the road, thankfully!
I wish I could join you on your camping trip, but I have to get all the gear first. Thanks for showing what bags you use besides your saddlebags from Vikingbags. I'd like to get the hard case saddle bags as well, but I'm going with the lockable other one which is cheaper. Of course, their Mother's Day Sale event with 25% off is going on at the moment, so those hard cases are mostly sold out anyway. I like the yellow bag you use, but I'm going to get The 100L Black Bag. I've also been looking into dry bags instead of using luggage Sissybar Bag. Just need to find those straps you used that he said that you obtained at a Hardware Store. I want to so much take a trip across The United States on my VTX1300. Have fun out there. As for stove and stuff, I'll find something good. I might not have a Maverick Drone which I'd like to have as well, but maybe one day.

Hi there, just thought id share the importance of securing your gear and whats holding your gear to your bike. I was 4 days into a ride from Sunshine Coast QLD to Darwin NT when a Ocky strap came loose, went into my rear wheel and locked the bike up at 90kms per hour. After 11 broken and displaced ribs, broken collar bone and fractured back, helicoper ride 90 min to Townsville hospital for 3 weeks im finally out and up and about. Im lucky but could have been avoided if i just took the time to check my gear and straps during the course o fthe 450kms we road that day. Take care all. be safe. Bretto

Good points, but please DO NOT hide keys in helmet lining. In case of crash, it can become pressure point and dig into the skull. As for the weather app, try Windy if you haven't already. Works well.
I am a personal protection and firearms instructor with more the 30 years experience. Your video is very good and you seem to have studied ways to survive many situations. How you seem to be in uneducated or misinformed about firearms. Although laws very from state to state. I have inquired on line to many states and been able get copies of their laws. I hope that you will find someone knowledgeable and learn more because even using other means of force can get you in legal trouble. I've had many people since correct me that you can indeed carry a firearm over state lines (my mistake!). My decision not to carry a one or learn how to use one is a personal choice however. I'm happy to report that in 6 months camping across 48 states I never regretted my decision. I have no judgement on those who make a different decision for themselves!

If bear spray doesn't stop someone then your pocket knife won't either. Go old school, Fiskars/Gerber/Mora camp axe.... can also be used to cut wood for a camp fire ! If a camp axe in one hand and bear spray in the other doesn't deter someone nothing will.
Lol I do have a pack axe but I would be very unlikely to ever use it against a predator....I think I'd be inclined to whack a rock to the head, air horn to the ear, and bear spray to the eyes. I keep everything handy. I guess I'll have to see what I grab if the situation ever arises...hopefully never!!

You thought of everything! Speaking of weather, how do you deal with high winds? I know that Sunshine is lighter weight. I sometimes get tossed around on my Savage.
My worst crosswinds were in Wyoming and South Dakota, but I just dialled back on the throttle and tried to stay in my lane despite the limited propulsion. It was really difficult
Some of these tactics are smart and could be useful. However as a man and trained in defensive and offensive tactics, the choice of weapons here will give someone a false sense of security. Someone in the mindset of causing harm, none of these weapons would actually do much to prevent it. The absolute fact is, the only real equalizer is a firearm. There are a lot of States where its legal to carry and if its not then that State probably isn't worth visiting anyway. You can gamble with your life, but I will not. Good luck and ride "safe".
Everyone has their own comfort level and personal requirements that need to be met for them to feel safe. That is subjective, and a choice for each person to make. There is always a risk when travelling, the large majority of which wouldn't be mitigated by having a firearm. But when it comes to the very, very rare circumstance where I've felt threatened by another human, I've handled it successfully without a deadly weapon. Ive also been solo motocamping across New Zealand and Mongolia for many months at a time. Places like these, firearms are not an option to make you feel safe - so if you want to enjoy what other countries have to offer, you'd need to learn how to lean on other safety methods. All that being said, I have no issues whatsoever with people who need a gun to feel safe. I'm just not one of them.

This, th-cam.com/video/apw-e1oRhJA/w-d-xo.html is US marines reactions to pepper spray which is 3 times less potent then bear spray, bear spray also has way more in a can. bear spray + getting on your bike and leaving is going to work fine in 99% of situations that a gun would help in, and the odds that you'll end up in a situation like that are quite slim anyway. Also bear spray, can and should be, always on you and available for bears, whereas guns cant be always on you everywhere. I love the air horn too, its not always about stopping someone directly, if you get other peoples attention that's normally enough. Also air horns are great for scaring off bears so you don't have to waste your expensive bear spray, definitely going in my kit on my next bicycling trip. p.s. "There are a lot of States where its legal to carry and if its not then that State probably isn't worth visiting anyway."
@@LunchCutterProductions I knew one bloke who was paranoid about sleeping in any tent believing he would undoubtedly be stabbed through the tent walls if he ever did My horizons are limited to the "Great Southern Land" I can ride wherever I like and weather allowing would sooner sleep next to an open fire than be bothered to hang my hammock or set up my hoochie and I'll guarantee 110% I will not be stabbed or shot doing it Than again I'm no pretty young thing, but you always sound like you know what you're doing
I loved the trip! Would 100% recommend doing it - but you have to time it right with the seasons of you want to make it around each state before/after the winter months. Or you could just buy some great heated gear!
that was pretty cool. i have been watching moto camp videos. my biggest concern was safety. i carry, but would rather scare an intruder, than shoot them. i did see your other video on the gear, like the rain suit duck taped. i must say, going all around America solo is pretty darn incredible. my first time after a couple practice local camps would probably be Daytona Beach. it's only one and a half hours away, but still far enough for a first timer. will you or do you ride back home? i think you said New Zealand.
It's a good idea to get comfortable doing short trips before any big ones! Yes I have done a motocamping trip in New Zealand this time last year (I documented it on my Instagram @kiwicruisette). I'm based in the states for now though and hope to do more trips this summer
Some very good tips thank you. Don't agree with everything, the key inside the helmet will be very dangerous in a crash. Also I I don't think you are using good enough hearing protections.
Very true about the key in the helmet, many people have corrected me on this. Another location I like to hide the key, is inside the brake light cover.
I’m investing in a lightweight tactical axe/ tomahawk that will cut kindling hammer my tent pegs and be an intimidating weapon with anyone that has a knife when comes to someone that has a gun ya pretty much up the creek 😆
@@LunchCutterProductions Peaceful De-escalation only works in movies and well meaning but totally useless self-defense classes. Please explain how you plan to peacefully de-escalate a 250 pound man violently attacking you in your tent in the middle of the night as he beats you into unconsciousness? This kind of attack happens quickly, usually without warning and is extremely violent. My suggestion gives you the best chance to survive that situation. If you do decide adopt my suggestion. Get training and continue to train to prepare yourself for a violent encounter. People never regret having a means to defend themselves only NOT having the means. I spent 6 months camping alone in the national forests across every state in the country and I never once felt threatened, never mind by this mythical violent 250 pound man that you seem to think is out roaming around campgrounds looking to murder people. Statistically speaking, for every criminal killed in self defense, 34 innocent people die from idiots who are just trigger happy. If you feel safer from having your gun then cool 👍 I don't care, you do you. But for me, it's no thank you.

It's not illegal to carry a gun in America. Different states have different regulations on it. Just research before you leave. You can protect yourself if need be.
Try Wasp spray. Stronger than Bear spray and shoots 26 feet.
It is kinda sad that woman feel unsafe around men! I understand why but it is a shame non-the -less. As an occasional male solo camper I worry about punctures (no puncture repair) and the weather. Mostly I get to feeling a bit self conscientious being by myself, particularly in a busy touristy area! Great advice, thanks
Yeah it sucks, but important to be aware of any potential danger and mitigate as much as possible. I never had any issues in the 6 months I was on the road, thankfully!

I wish I could join you on your camping trip, but I have to get all the gear first. Thanks for showing what bags you use besides your saddlebags from Vikingbags. I'd like to get the hard case saddle bags as well, but I'm going with the lockable other one which is cheaper. Of course, their Mother's Day Sale event with 25% off is going on at the moment, so those hard cases are mostly sold out anyway. I like the yellow bag you use, but I'm going to get The 100L Black Bag. I've also been looking into dry bags instead of using luggage Sissybar Bag. Just need to find those straps you used that he said that you obtained at a Hardware Store. I want to so much take a trip across The United States on my VTX1300. Have fun out there. As for stove and stuff, I'll find something good. I might not have a Maverick Drone which I'd like to have as well, but maybe one day.

Hi there, just thought id share the importance of securing your gear and whats holding your gear to your bike. I was 4 days into a ride from Sunshine Coast QLD to Darwin NT when a Ocky strap came loose, went into my rear wheel and locked the bike up at 90kms per hour. After 11 broken and displaced ribs, broken collar bone and fractured back, helicoper ride 90 min to Townsville hospital for 3 weeks im finally out and up and about. Im lucky but could have been avoided if i just took the time to check my gear and straps during the course o fthe 450kms we road that day. Take care all. be safe. Bretto

Not illegal to carry a gun across every state. You can. It’s “how” you carry the gun in each state that makes the technical difference. Just wanted to clarify. Safe travels.

Good points, but please DO NOT hide keys in helmet lining.
In case of crash, it can become pressure point and dig into the skull.

I am a personal protection and firearms instructor with more the 30 years experience. Your video is very good and you seem to have studied ways to survive many situations. How you seem to be in uneducated or misinformed about firearms. Although laws very from state to state. I have inquired on line to many states and been able get copies of their laws. I hope that you will find someone knowledgeable and learn more because even using other means of force can get you in legal trouble.

I've had many people since correct me that you can indeed carry a firearm over state lines (my mistake!). My decision not to carry a one or learn how to use one is a personal choice however. I'm happy to report that in 6 months camping across 48 states I never regretted my decision. I have no judgement on those who make a different decision for themselves!
The video was great it answer all my concerns about personal safety when solo bike camping. also some great tips like spare keys and separating my cards.

Bear spray is regulated, Pepper spray is not. Pepper spray is much stronger. Also, tear gas guns are completely legal, except in New York.

If bear spray doesn't stop someone then your pocket knife won't either. Go old school, Fiskars/Gerber/Mora camp axe.... can also be used to cut wood for a camp fire ! If a camp axe in one hand and bear spray in the other doesn't deter someone nothing will.
Lol I do have a pack axe but I would be very unlikely to ever use it against a predator....I think I'd be inclined to whack a rock to the head, air horn to the ear, and bear spray to the eyes. I keep everything handy. I guess I'll have to see what I grab if the situation ever arises...hopefully never!!

You thought of everything! Speaking of weather, how do you deal with high winds? I know that Sunshine is lighter weight. I sometimes get tossed around on my Savage.
My worst crosswinds were in Wyoming and South Dakota, but I just dialled back on the throttle and tried to stay in my lane despite the limited propulsion. It was really difficult

Some of these tactics are smart and could be useful. However as a man and trained in defensive and offensive tactics, the choice of weapons here will give someone a false sense of security. Someone in the mindset of causing harm, none of these weapons would actually do much to prevent it. The absolute fact is, the only real equalizer is a firearm. There are a lot of States where its legal to carry and if its not then that State probably isn't worth visiting anyway. You can gamble with your life, but I will not. Good luck and ride "safe".
Everyone has their own comfort level and personal requirements that need to be met for them to feel safe. That is subjective, and a choice for each person to make. There is always a risk when travelling, the large majority of which wouldn't be mitigated by having a firearm. But when it comes to the very, very rare circumstance where I've felt threatened by another human, I've handled it successfully without a deadly weapon.
Ive also been solo motocamping across New Zealand and Mongolia for many months at a time. Places like these, firearms are not an option to make you feel safe - so if you want to enjoy what other countries have to offer, you'd need to learn how to lean on other safety methods. All that being said, I have no issues whatsoever with people who need a gun to feel safe. I'm just not one of them.
@@LunchCutterProductions if someone gets bear sprayed they're not gonna be able to function well. This, th-cam.com/video/apw-e1oRhJA/w-d-xo.html is US marines reactions to pepper spray which is 3 times less potent then bear spray, bear spray also has way more in a can. bear spray + getting on your bike and leaving is going to work fine in 99% of situations that a gun would help in, and the odds that you'll end up in a situation like that are quite slim anyway. Also bear spray, can and should be, always on you and available for bears, whereas guns cant be always on you everywhere.
I love the air horn too, its not always about stopping someone directly, if you get other peoples attention that's normally enough. Also air horns are great for scaring off bears so you don't have to waste your expensive bear spray, definitely going in my kit on my next bicycling trip.

My horizons are limited to the "Great Southern Land" I can ride wherever I like and weather allowing would sooner sleep next to an open fire than be bothered to hang my hammock or set up my hoochie and I'll guarantee 110%

I loved the trip! Would 100% recommend doing it - but you have to time it right with the seasons of you want to make it around each state before/after the winter months. Or you could just buy some great heated gear!
that was pretty cool. i have been watching moto camp videos. my biggest concern was safety. i carry, but would rather scare an intruder, than shoot them. i did see your other video on the gear, like the rain suit duck taped. i must say, going all around America solo is pretty darn incredible. my first time after a couple practice local camps would probably be Daytona Beach. it's only one and a half hours away, but still far enough for a first timer. will you or do you ride back home? i think you said New Zealand.
It's a good idea to get comfortable doing short trips before any big ones! Yes I have done a motocamping trip in New Zealand this time last year (I documented it on my Instagram @kiwicruisette). I'm based in the states for now though and hope to do more trips this summer

Some very good tips thank you. Don't agree with everything, the key inside the helmet will be very dangerous in a crash. Also I I don't think you are using good enough hearing protections.
Very true about the key in the helmet, many people have corrected me on this. Another location I like to hide the key, is inside the brake light cover.
I’m investing in a lightweight tactical axe/ tomahawk that will cut kindling hammer my tent pegs and be an intimidating weapon with anyone that has a knife when comes to someone that has a gun ya pretty much up the creek 😆

@@LunchCutterProductions Peaceful De-escalation only works in movies and well meaning but totally useless self-defense classes. Please explain how you plan to peacefully de-escalate a 250 pound man violently attacking you in your tent in the middle of the night as he beats you into unconsciousness?
This kind of attack happens quickly, usually without warning and is extremely violent. My suggestion gives you the best chance to survive that situation. If you do decide adopt my suggestion. Get training and continue to train to prepare yourself for a violent encounter. People never regret having a means to defend themselves only NOT having the means. I would never recover and obviously neither would the person who made a genuine mistake.
I spent 6 months camping alone in the national forests across every state in the country and I never once felt threatened, never mind by this mythical violent 250 pound man that you seem to think is out roaming around campgrounds looking to murder people.
Statistically speaking, for every criminal killed in self defense, 34 innocent people die from idiots who are just trigger happy. If you feel safer from having your gun then cool 👍 I don't care, you do you. But for me, it's no thank you.
