setting goals with uncertainty during unemployment | time to change the goals

  • I'm usually looking forward to the end of the month or quarter to see how I did with my goal... But without a job, it's been feeling less fun. Month after month I find myself moving the deadline for "Land a Full-Time Job" and considering other goals I set for myself (reaching 300k net worth or moving out) are tied to this ONE goal, it's demotivating.
SO it's time to make changes for how I'm thinking about my goals during unemployment... maybe don't just tie my identity to landing a full-time role??
if you're unemployed, how are you setting goals and staying motivated OUTSIDE of the job search?

I understand where you are coming from. Being unemployed and looking for work isn't fun. Been there. I've learned that sometimes it isnt you for not finding full time work. Employer have become picky with who they hire. Have you tried temp agency like robert half? You said you like making these videos, so maybe this a chance to start your own business.

I can 1 million percent imagine it'd be so so hard to go from super saver finance person to unemployed long term and still making videos, grappling with identity, and also how to see goals and expecations of yourself. OOOOF. I'm considering the idea of trying for part time as idea for my financial life once I reach a certain plance and I know it'd pronably hard to switch to making less, saving less, and also even switching to spending instead of saving. Its all super intensely psychological and existential! Have you read Die with Zero?? I'm reading it now and it's intense on my brain and good to be considering

THIS! Let's say I did reach FI/RE but never figured out who I was outside of work, I'd still be very lost and maybe even want to go back to work for my identity back. It's something I've heard comes up for people after FI/RE and only recently are people recommending you try the part-time to see how you would manage.
I haven't read that one but did listen to a few of the podcast interviews the author did so I'll have to check it out!!!

@@FirstGenMoney For sure, we all need to figure out LIFE not just work intensely and then expect free time to be cure for all ails. Its not. I personally am going for slow fire, coast fire ! It's seriously something so freeing . Semi retired- so many advantages. I say that as if I've done it already, which I haven't, lol. have you checked out the Fioneers stuff?
