Anyone who doesn't like this song is wrong. LOL.... i really love his song. perfect for an ending track. Seems like a finale or end of a movie song...like every time I hear the song Everybody wants to rule the world I can't stop thinking of the movie Real Genius from the 80's. Neil's drumming on this track is awesome. He mixes it up so much on each verse and chorus. Flows nicely.

One of the crying shames about Rush's career is that they never performed this song live. And I understand why because it's a pure production piece but still, it would have been something. So much power and emotion in this one. And dear God, those lyrics! Dare I call this a Rush power ballad? Cheers!

Yes, they never played it live. I've seen them 10 times, and it just so happens the Presto tour was my first rush show ever. I remember when the inflatable rabbit was on stage. It was a running joke until one tour, and the guys decided to blow the rabbit up. Great memories, presto was indeed a very magical album...

This is one of the most beautiful songs in the huge repertoire of Rush. It's also incredibly versatile in the range of different musical techniques they use. And - as usual, the most humble and underrated Alex Lifeson employs different styles of guitar playing in one song.

This is one of their most fully realized songs. The moody piano, the palm-muted bass (Presto is the album of the percolating bass part), the bluesy guitar licks in the second verse, the part where Neil switches it up by adding the open hi-hat, Geddy singing higher than he has since Permanent Waves, and a typically great Alex solo. Everything works together and builds up to a great ending. One of my favorite album closers over a discography where several of them haven't been great (Countdown, I'm looking at you).

I never understood why a lot of Rush fans don't like this album. This was my go to album to use songs from to convert people to liking and appreciating Rush. I think Presto has some very pop oriented radio friendly songs which are easy to absorb for the non-musicians ear which is why the loyalist may disregard it. This album came out my senior year of high school. I listened to it often on my Walkman. One day in 8th period chorus, a friend of mine said she wondered what I was listening to all the time. I lent her the Presto cassette and she took it home to listen to it. Next day she returned it and said "Rush overall isn't my kind of thing but I absolutely really liked that last track (Available Light)." I kept in touch with her on Facebook over the years. She died 2 years ago from Covid. I cannot hear this song now without thinking of my friend from high school...

The producer, Rupert Hines was a vocalist himself and was known for getting a good vocal performance in the albums he produced. I think the fuss about Counterparts is a function of time. I was born in '77 and my first time hearing Rush was Counterparts, and I wouldn't be surprised if many in my generation had the same experience. It creates a bias that I share, honestly. The only thing that would have made Counterparts better was more guitar in the mix. And it was still great

I'm 4 years older and Presto was my first Rush record. All of the Counterparts tracks were leaked in advance onto the Internet as mono files at roughly landline phone quality, which I think was a world first. I was in college in 1993 and a member of a worldwide Rush email list called The National Midnight Star (after the line in "Red Lenses") so I saw the hype first hand. Hearing "Stick It Out" for the first time from the lo-fi file was mind blowing. I'd play the cassette copy I made for non-fans and everyone thought it was Soundgarden or Nirvana.

Glad you liked this one, it is such a well written and emotional song for sure. Geddy's vocal performance is stellar on it and Alex as usual with the beautiful layered guitars and emotion. Nice to hear harmonies on a Rush song too! I think you will like this album more on repeated listens, the songs are all really good. Production wise, it is still lacking and too small and thin in many ways but there are hints that is going to be corrected soon. Roll the Bones....another interesting album. The thin drum and bass sound still prevails on that album, but Alex starts to sound much more fuller sounding and better. I believe Roll the Bones is the record where he switched to PRS guitars and it is noticeable, the riffs get a little thicker and overall sound is bigger. There is some filler on it for sure, but I think you are going to like Roll the Bones even more than this...spoiler alert, the "rap" on the title track is very polarizing to Rush fans. Some saw it as a pathetic attempt to sound hip, others saw the humor in it. The production style is not fully brought back to good until Counterparts though....Roll the Bones still has that paper thin snare drum sound and no bottom end really, but it does sound better than this record. Presto overall is a good album, not great, but so much better than HYF. Roll the Bones is better than this one I think, look forward to seeing your reaction!

Some good songwriting and arrangement on this record. It does sound thin, and I don’t think that’s Ovation. I think it’s Hine’s love of direct input guitars. But yeah, it’s a curveball. Yeah for me when I first listened to the album, show don’t tell, scars, and this song were the three I liked. To me this is some of Geddy’s best vocals on this song. He really shows off his range in this song and it sounds so smooth. Over time I really liked the pass and presto. Sorry, but the rest of the songs just don’t do it for me. But as stated numerous times now, music is subjective. There are rush songs I like that other people don’t and vice versa. In the end it’s all good. Once again, Rush IS variety as stated in the movie😂. I think the reason a lot of people are pointing to counterparts is precisely because of the production, which we know that is something you’re always looking for.

Still amazing 30 to 40 years into their career they could make albums as good as they were. Headlong Flight and The Garden are just plain incredible.

Clockwork angels is the perfect way to close their career. Even though that was not the intent, to go out after that album which brought back much more prog elements worked well for them. I actually didn't care for the album originally because my brain was used to the prior few albums. I agree that there are no albums left that don't have throwaway songs but the net set of albums do have some amazing work and get heavier. Between Counterparts and Vapor Trails, they reentered the harder rock category after living in the more adult rock sound that started with HYF. Some hiccups but I think Justin will find plenty to like.

    • @enriquemora9272
      @enriquemora9272 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Of course things got better if you considere they almost rock bottomed with HYF. Obviously they had their ups and downs and the music never reached the level of Permanent Waves or Moving Pictures, until they recorded their swam song album Clockwork Angels. That's a hell of a last record.

@@rgp8038 respectfully disagree. I think this album and all the rest of the subsequent albums had great songs on them but none of them had every single song that I loved like permanent waves or moving pictures. I would argue that this and some of their subsequent records are every bit as good as their first four or five. Even 2112 had duds on it.

But at the same time all I could think to myself at the end of this video is whew!-you are finally out of the '80s and going on into the '90s thank God. Roll the bones gets better and after Roll the Bomes it's like they take a few steps forward instead of just one or two at getting back to that hard progressive rock of a decade before and they become absolutely incredible again through the 90s and the 2000s up to Clockwork Angels, and I feel even get better in the 2000s then they were in the 70s ending with the Pinnacle of their career.

Available Light is a great closer to the album and to the 80s Rush. IMHO, they always maintained a certain degree of excellence throughout their career. One thing I will say is their opening track of every album is one of the best on each record. No, 'Presto' is no 'Permanent Waves' or 'Moving Pictures,' however, it's an overall great recording after HYF.
And to me, the next 5 albums are similar until their last release, 'Clockwork Angels' in 2012. Many of the songs are heavier in their styles, musicianship and production. I'm enjoying the journey with you! ✌🐇

Going through these albums top to bottom, there's usually a song on most albums that just stands out. They are slightly not like the others, a bit more melodic - or just plain weird. It's Available Light on Presto. Entre Nous on Permanent Waves. Vital Signs on Moving Pictures. Countdown on Signals. Red Lenses on Grace Under Pressure. Curious what you think of Roll the Bones... Bravado is a standout, but the real sleeper is Ghost of a Chance, just some beautiful change ups. First song I think of on Roll the Bones.

Great insight as always, you’re right that there is nothing like this in the catalogue to date, it’s like Rush wrote a “song” if that makes any sense. Really glad you dug this song, I wasn’t sure what you’d think of the piano/vocal verses. Like many others, it’s one of my favourites, particularly the dissonance in the choruses and the fact that each is slightly different in rhythm. It’ll be interesting to see what you think of Ghost Of A Chance off Roll The Bones. And if you haven’t started it yet, it’s definitely not a replay of Presto, for me it’s just slightly better regarding the production (though you can tell it’s Rupert H) and the song writing. I feel like Presto was an experiment that led to Roll The Bones.

Nice bit of blues-y guitar from Alex on this one, even though his solo is criminally short.
Rupert Hine was known for art or even proggy pop, in his solo career and with bands like The Fixx and Saga. IMO he was a good fit, although I wish Rush could have worked with Steve Lilywhite at least once, just because he does awesome things with percussion (and wouldn't have allowed this paper bag snare sound.) Anyways, you now get where a lot of were saying "Don't worry, things get better with Presto," even if it still has some holdovers from the synth pop days.
Roll the Bones is another step toward power trio purity, although IMO from a songwriting standpoint Presto may be the better album overall. I haven't listened to RtB all the way through in a long time so it'll be fun to go through it again with everyone. Plus I think it's the last album where Geddy uses the Wal bass.

Leave it to Lifeson to wait till the end of the freaking album to actually have a decent guitar tone. Weirdness. I think this tune is definitely a high water mark in Gettys vocal development. The harmonies are beautiful, and his delivery is just passionate and spot on. One of my favorite Rush songs in terms of vocals. Hell the song is very cool in general. I don't know where this was in terms of the timeline for material they were riding on this record but this one has a lot more in common with the next album, roll the bones. Mars.

The only one that I seem to consistently lose in the shuffle is Snake and Arrows, though it’s tour was pretty killer. As you can see most people are skipping right over Roll the Bones and going to Counterparts, I think because Roll the Bones sounds almost like a continuation of Presto as far as the style of the songs and production, like they could be sister albums, example much like the Beatles Rubber Soul and Revolver. Everybody keeps talking about counterparts and yes the production is thicker and packs more of a punch and the songs are heavier but for me personally I only like about half the album, there's some filler songs in the middle of it IMO

Yes, I think a few songs are ok on CP and RTB, but its only one or 2 on both albums. I bought Vapor Trails and I never listen to it. Do I like the "sound" of CP? Yes, heavy and guitar centered, but no song compares to available light, and that makes me sad.

I think you'll find ROLL THE BONES to be more of the same with about the same amount of good tunes and overall thin sounding production. Rupert Hine did rescue them from their "drowning in synthesizers" sound but did little for the sonically weak quality of the Guitar and Bass sounds. You'll Have to wait for COUNTERPARTS (to me, their last GREAT album) for that to be rectified courtesy of Kevin "the caveman" Shirley. He was the recording engineer who had Geddy plugging his 60s Fender Jazz into vintage Ampeg tube amps and forbidding Alex to use reverb and instead plugging straight into amps. Much more ANALOG sounding as you will hear!

Overall I would rate Presto as a rather good album. I would rate it somewhere in the middle. Not a top 10 but not among my least favorite albums either. It’s a welcome change of pace from 80's keyboard-dominated Rush. A back-to-basics approach that we will see improved upon Roll the Bones and especially on Counterparts.

Problem is this becomes the crux between 'old Rush' and 'new Rush', whilst the songs are melodic and have some great parts, they become forgettable in the main, and this IMO opinion became a problem as the later albums became increasingly longer. IMO Rush, up until Hold Your Fire were trail blazers in musicianship, sound and production but then they tried to adapt to the music trends around them at the time. Coming up are what I call the Yin and Yang albums, totally different from each other, I won't spoil it for you. I have difficulty recalling actual tracks, and I sold one of them.
