The Scandalous Life of Pastor Ted Haggard... And His Dark Return | Documentary

  • In the early 2000's, Ted Haggard was recognized as one of the most prominent pastors in the United States. He was President of the National Association of Evangelicals, a best selling author, served on several state boards, and spoke with then-President George W. Bush by phone every week. He pastored a megachurch of 14,000 and taught conservative values... But Pastor Ted was living a double life, one that was more shocking than a chemistry teacher cooking some blue sky. In 2006, what Pastor Ted did in the darkness, literally, would come to light in front of the entire world.

Lordshippers are some of the most prideful, wicked people you will ever meet.
They talk grace through faith but then redefine faith as obedience and belief as total commitment.
They say that you must repent of your sins to be saved.
That's law keeping and has never saved anyone or contributed in any way to salvation.
Saving repentance is realizing that you are a sinner deserving of God's just punishment in Hell and turn (repent) from whatever you trusted in before, if indeed you trusted in anything; to trusting in the person and finished work of Christ "alone" for salvation.
Repentance of sins is a service issue.
Salvation is absolutely free and not conditional upon service.
I serve God faithfully out of love and gratitude for the free gift of salvation, whilst the faith plus works equals salvation crowd serves God to help out with their salvation.
Therein lies the difference between us.

Many a day I sat on our front porch while he traveled for work and cried and asked God was i such a bad person that i deserved being lied too, cheated on, screamed at that everything was my fault? I had quit dressing myself up...Quit wearing makeup,,,cooked for him, making sure he had everything he wanted, never denied him sex, mowed the 5 acres and maintained the house so he wouldn't have to do anything but rest when he came home. Lived thru alcoholism and screaming and yelling because he made the living and believed I did nothing, everything was his, and I had sold my house that I had before we married and put the down put on, let my kids live thru his greed and selfishness...a job I had written his resume and sent in for him being a Corp Dir. Of Facilities over 37 facilities over multiple states which involved traveling, but of course he landed the job thru his interview because of his knowledge and abilities, but it went too his head and he was the boss of everything..me, the house, my kids (that weren't his, and he always let me know that) he had made me give up my business and my license years before that, saying it cost him money for me to work but I was stupid to realize it was the control of not being able to control the money i made and what i could give my kids. I don't pretend to know what all the victims feel or felt..but I do know that how OR what one chooses to forgive or not forgive is their prerogative...their choice. One thing is for sure the amount of unforgiveness one holds-in can weigh very heavy on one's soul and it can physically & emotionally tear and bring one down even to the point of death depending on how added anger hooks onto a person's being. I believe the Pastor's wife is simply trying to live her Faith out in forgiving her husband. In Matthew 18:21-32 the Lord Jesus was asked by one of his disciples(Peter) on.."How often should one forgive their brother ( in Faith) who sins against them? Jesus answer was..."not only 70 x 7 BUT 70 X 70...." meaning an infinite/limitless amount of times. Christ's Word (The Holy Bible) speaks in his prayer (Matthew 6:9-13), "...and forgive us AS(same as) we forgive those(others) who trespass (sin/do us harm) against us..." encourages us to forgive AS we would want others to forgive us. DO NOT judge the Pastor's wife for wanting to forgive...ONLY God knows what he has asked of her and PRAY God's strength & blessing is over her and her children. In the end each one of us will face our Maker & Creator as to how we lived our lives; what we did with the breath of life HE bestowed on us during our human journey on this earth and/or whether or not we took to heart to love and forgive AS HE did with us...To be true to God's Word.
ONLY he knows what sin lurks in our minds and souls...God have mercy on us. NO ONE is above God..., "...for it is written, Vengeance is mine, I will repay, saith the Lord.".

Thank you for the documentary. I was angry & saddened by it all. I knew Ted & other pastors there. I was a pastor at another very large church in Colorado Springs. One of the things I noticed in my involvement with New Life church, was a lack of real accountability… I often wondered, does Ted have anyone in his life who is holding him accountable and vice versa? We all need those kinds of people in our lives, to help us with our own potential blind spots. I remember after the initial scandal and his admission, there were people that were involved in a restoration process and eventually Ted allegedly came out from under them. That raised a pretty big red flag for me. One of the people who was mentoring him was Pastor Jack Hayford out of the Los Angeles area. Jack from all accounts was an incredible man and passed away in Jan 2023 at age 89. Jack wrote dozens of books, was on the radio, and was very well known. When I was 12 my bestfriend and I met some girls at our neighborhood pool. We all became friends. 1 of the girls was the daughter of a pastor and the other girls went to that church and their private school. While we went to public school and I was raised catholic. Anyway we were invited to go to a summer camp and we went. While there were fun things to do at the camp like horse back riding and go carts and water slides, we were expected to go to church services every morning and every night. This is where things got crazy. There were all these exdrug addicts getting on stage and saying how the lord changed them and everyone was speaking in tongues and people were passing out. The 2nd night we were there we walked out of church service and there was a boy around our age acting intoxicated. I was concerned and asked if he was ok. They responded to me that the boy was drunk in the holy spirit. This boy was thrashing around and acting insane. That night my bestfriend and I decided to call our parents cause we wanted to go home. My mom came and got us 2 days later. It was like a 10 hr drive. I'm 41 now and remember it like it was yesterday.

I will tell you about a passage in the Bible about the Apostle Peter. On Pentecost, Peter went out and was telling the people about Jesus Christ. He was speaking in every different language of the people there. Jews, Greeks, Samarians, etc. People thought he was drunk because he was speaking in different languages so everyone would understand what he was saying. It was 9:00 in the morning. My point is, that people are affected by the Holy Spirit. I know for a fact. Some people fake it, but it is also a fact that the Holy Spirit will impact that person to an extent that they are filled completely with the Holy Spirit, and they laugh and dance and are filled with joy from the Spirit. Some people would think they were drunk, but they were NOT. You have to read the whole Bible to understand just what the Holy Spirit does in someone's life.

I’m sure your dad was affected as well as the entire community. Nobody wants to feel deceived especially within a religious community. Mike Jones most likely had been dealing with his identity his entire life and because of the non supportive side of peoples opinions, it unfortunately got the best of him. That’s not saying what he did was not wrong but there’s a lot more in-depth reasoning to why people do things like this. Hopefully over time everyone can move on from it with more understanding and knowledge.

As a bisexual person, it’s weird hearing Ted say such accurate things about bisexuality like “gay men who have heterosexual sex aren’t asked to come out as straight [so why should I come out as gay?]”
But then refer to his sexuality as the problem. His problem isn’t being bisexual, it’s cheating on his wife.
Unlike what Ted seems to think, bisexual people can be faithful to their partners just as well as anyone else can.

I knew he was about to make a life-changing move and it was going to be tough. I have to say I was a bit shocked by the story, however, I was more shocked at Mike's side job and that I was in a "six degrees of separation" situation. Christian hypocrisy and the fall of another hypocritical pastor stopped being shocking long ago, it's par for the course. The ones screaming the loudest are usually the ones doing the most dirt. If one studies the new testament on the "functions" not leaderships of elders, deacons, wot not, using principles of exegesis, hermeneutics, history, one finds elders ( men + women who were and still should function as bishops and pastors) who were comforters within, not above the priesthood of believers in Jesus Christ.

Even Churches that have boards of "elders" or the "Eldership" which is basically the same as the one pastor, elders under him/her system!
The above is the office, wethers the elders were merely functions by elders for the weak, + new to the faith, not for those who are mature in the faith, who go directly to God, not a person, although one can still go to the above for help?

And its sad that people are still following his religion. Arrogant men like Trump and Haggart believe anything they say is true, or at least believed. Most important is that homosexuality must be acceptable and therefore open. This is why Christianity, which teaches differently, cannot ever be relavent and healthy in society.

Mad respect to Mike for being a man of integrity. I find it utterly despicable that sex workers are treated as somehow less than anyone else and I also find it sad that potential partners have run a mile , like whyyy? All he displayed was honor and integrity and care for other gay people particulary young ones being forced into conversion therapy. He did a brave thing and honorable and if that's not attractive then I don't know what is. I truly hope you find happiness and peace because you deserve nothing less Mike. Shame on you gayle for basically calling him a devil in your pathetic book. And shame on you Ted for messing with young men in your congregation and then lying and trying to manipulate them with your forgiveness crap. Thanks Josie for telling this story.

Prostitutes are not less than anyone, their actions are however what drags them low. We can't treat these actions like they make the world a better place when infact they often do the opposite.

Any potential partners have the right to not want to be involved with a sex worker, even ones who were not involved in any scandals.
While sex workers should be allowed to practice their profession in a safe and legal environment, it is also the right of their prospective partners to pass them over due to it. People are allowed to have their dating preferences.

Prostitution is the oldest profession-by your logic, society has only gotten increasingly worse since the advent of agriculture.
Also, greater false moralizing there, claiming you think prostitutes aren’t lesser than everyone else and then immediately calling them low.

In 2009 l read an article of the evolution of "Church" leaving Jerusalem and getting to Greece it became philosophy, further to Rome it became an institution finally getting to America it became and enterprise. This was the author 's summation and man was he right?(yes he was right!) What a weird thing to say. At 23:15, the report asks "Have you ever used meth before?" and Ted responds with "No I have not. And I did not ever use it with him." It's like a child lying about taking a cookie from the cookie jar. "No, I didn't eat no cookies. I definitely didn't eat the chocolate chip cookies in the cookie jar."
