From Wikipedia: (John) Fogerty expressed surprise at having come up with a candle as a metaphor for a beacon guiding the singer home. He stated that the song is "about the loner in me. Wanting to feel understood, needing those at home to shine a light so that I can make my way back."

"A musical Preacher"...I don't think I've ever heard a more perfect description of Fogerty. This is one of my favorite CCR songs. It captures the love of Home that, as long as the people who love you are there, always brings comfort and a safe harbor from the trials of life. We should all strive to be that Light. ~ Lesa on my husband's account.

It was somewhat seen as a message to those in Vietnam, put a candle in the window and I'll be coming home soon. I can see the light was a metaphor for hope, they longed to see their loved ones. John just jazzed it up with some Blues....my Fav. CCR song tbh.

I definitely think you nailed it, being a child in the Vietnam era it hit me that way. But they were comin' home, a lot of them, in coffins. Like my 2 doors down neighbor friend's older brother, when I was 12. Fogerty was an army veteran, it just connects that way, he sang it with total focus and conviction, probably his best vocal.

Church-adjacent ... what a perfect word for it. And yeah you're right Lex, that feeling of kneeling in some sort of worship service is a lot different than the sitting version. What I love about this song and it comes up a lot with these guys, is it this song can apply to so many different things and it feels spiritual and it could be totally interpreted that way but it also is easily secular, as in as long as the lonely traveler knows there is the light of love always waiting at home, whether it's family or friends or whatever, it helps him be confident. It was literally written about how lonely it can get being a singer on the road for really long stretches of time, but it is so well written that it can apply to almost anything. It could be a spiritual journey, it could be someone going off to the Vietnam War where the mortality rate was quite High, it could be somebody that's just really pushing the boundaries out there but is hopeful that there is someone at home to still accept him if he cracked crashes out and bombs it all

In some cultures (even within the US), there is a story about leaving a light on in a window to let the wayfarer know that he is welcome home. Lights in windows are a thing in some US cultures... remember "One if by land, two if by sea"? It's a way to convey a message, and a light in the window tells the traveler that he is welcome to come home.
I believe that is John Fogerty playing both piano and sax in this song.

To us it meant If our loved ones would put a candle in the window, if in our mind as long as we could see it it was going to guide us home... if you could no longer see the light in your mind, you had been out in the boonies too long and well that’s something you don’t talk about in polite company

This is not about dying, he has that "travelling bone," is not about dying. He is restless, whether grieving makes being at home difficult, having no work is a problem, or we wants to know what is out there in the wider world, or travel to expand his knowledge or he has to perform for a wider audience. He has reasons that make a lot of sense to him, to be gone at times, but he wants to take comfort in having a way to come home sooner or later, and having those that stayed, be welcoming. Traditionally a light in the window is put there daily at nightfall, to guide a traveller home, or someone lost from home, e.g. by a parent who refuses to move, until a lost child makes it home, even if it takes years. Staying connected in those days, was a great deal more difficult than today.

Vietnam War was going on in our generation at this time.
John Fogerty biographer Thomas M. Kitts describes the song as depicting a "world-weary figure," perhaps Jeremiah, who "undertakes an uncertain journey." The singer is confident as long as he "can see the light." Kitts points out that the word light has two meanings in the song, a spiritual meaning, such as in "The Lord is my light" from Psalm 27, and "the secular light of love." Kitts describes the music as having a "hymnal, church-like feel."
John Fogerty expressed surprise in his coming up with a candle as a metaphor for a beacon guiding the singer home. He stated that the song is "about the loner in me. Wanting to feel understood, needing those at home to shine a light so that I can make my way back."

I'm not sure if it's about dying, but it's definitely about people leaving. This song among many others got me thru one of the toughest losses I ever had in my young life. And when that happens in many cultures or religions, you'd light a candle or vigil and put it in the window. I would light a candle to light their way or for them to find their way back. Or maybe it was wishing for them to come back. Either way, the warm light was a way to keep their memory alive and to keep my world from going dark and cold. After someone dies, the dark nights remind you of what is now missing in your life. That's tough to sleep thru.

Per Wikipedia "Long As I Can See the Light" is a song by American rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival, from the album Cosmo's Factory. Released as the b-side of the single "Lookin' Out My Back Door" in 1970, it reached number 57 on the Cash Box singles chart in the US.
While never played live by CCR, it became a concert staple for singer John Fogerty as a solo artist.
Fogerty biographer Thomas M. Kitts describes the song as depicting a "world-weary figure", perhaps Jeremiah, who "undertakes an uncertain journey." The singer is confident as long as he "can see the light." Kitts points out that the word 'light' has two meanings in the song: a spiritual meaning, such as in "The Lord is my light" from Psalm 27, and "the secular light of love". He describes the music as having a "hymnal, church-like feel."

You have to remember when this was recorded the Vietnam war was still going on. It always struck me as the metal coffin coming home to send him on his way to see gods light which never goes out. With the southern rock style it’s hard to believe this band was from California. Modern music has rarely been able to express this kind of feelings.

Oh yeah, I also meant to say, I mentioned this a few times a long time ago and I'm so glad you finally got around to doing it. I'm sure a lot of other people have mentioned it. The one that I used to listen to back to back with this one all the time which I bet you guys would love and it would also make a great reaction, is another slow powerful song by then but it's a bit more on the rhythm and blues side with a slow amazing hard Groove to it that's really emotional. And it's simply called, Feeling Blue.
Fun factoid: long as I can see the light was actually released as the B-side of the single that I believe you guys have already heard, Looking out through my back door.
