Alamat in English is a legend; a myth; folklore; a fairy tale; or fable. And the word KASMALA is shuffle words of MALAKAS or in English (STRONG)

the very controversial st Louis world's fair included different native Filipino The concept of this song "kasmala" is about as living Exhibits it was also Called the 'human zoo '.. Imagine how our kababayans felt during that time being treated as animal in a foreign Land.. But as for the message of the song, it some what tells us that despite of those criticism and discrimination we should be STRONG or MALAKAS in filipino which the world KASMALA came from

The video they are trying to convey here is the "Manong era" in the Philippines which is the darkest part of our country’s history. Much darker than Spain and the Japanese occupation combined, which killed 4 million Filipinos (which is the 1/3 population of the Philippines at that time) as they attempted to transform the Philippines into a pure Anglo-Saxon nation in Asia, the reason why this isn’t touched upon in the Philippine history because the Philippine education system is very pro-American which is frustrating. The Philippine Exposition 1904 is actually a human zoo created by the Americans to showcase the indigenous ethnic tribes in the Philippines who were shipped to the US (mostly they’re from the Cordilleran Nation, specifically the ethnic Igorots).
The white masked people are literally the [White] American men.
At the video where Alas was brushed by the white PPE; it’s actually a reference of the “Filipino’s First Bath” poster by William McKinley. Since the US at that time implemented the Jim Crow laws, we are considered as undesirables together with African-Americans. The poster promoted white skin as ideal and that brown skin is considered “dirty” which has been ingrained to the Philippine society up to this day.
From Mo when he was photographed by the white man; Filipinos under the US are equated as a monkey.
From Gami, the Americans pour their money on Filipinos who are in human zoos as they find it entertaining. Filipinos (especially Cordillerans) were forced to eat dogs for entertainment, that’s why Gami ate the stuff toy.
From R-Ji, learning American English and American culture is a must, to the point where Filipinos began to embrace and love the American culture, abandoning the mainstream Hispanicized Filipino culture in that era. In the chorus, it shows Filipinos are forced to “dance” to Americans for entertainment at human zoos.
Valfer & Los Filipinos Tailoring symbolizes the success of a first generation Filipino immigrant in the US. Since Filipinos are very classy people and athletically built in the early 1900s, white American women fell in love with them which irritated the white American men. This led to anti-Filipino riots in California and Seattle where Filipino-Americans were killed out of pure hatred and jealousy.
From Jao, it symbolizes as an independent farmer where they are killed on daily basis for speaking their rights, probably killed by Americans or traitorous Filipino hacienderos. Sadly, these kind of practice still exists up to this day.
Taneo getting romantic with a female PPO’d person, show the early Filipino men migrant workers were blamed for taking the white man’s jobs and their women.
To summarize, Alamat is doing the American colonial era concept where Filipinos under the USA are second-class citizens in their own land, no matter what ethnicity you are. Even Insulares (Filipino-born Spaniards) are second-class citizens as well. Forced to speak English (because if they don’t, they’ll be killed for an attempt to spread sedition/resisting American leadership).
The lyrics talks about being attracted to the colonizers and being trapped or slaved by them.

  • @zyrakate1876

Hi Sir! I think that in general, it is about them paying tribute to our Filipino ancestors who sufferred hate before. There were so many symbolisms in the video and those are real and those happened before and the group want to raise awareness. But despite those hate that our ancestors sufferred from the colonizers, we thrive, we became strong. We are Kasmala. Kasmala is a play of the Tagalog word, malakas which means strong. Their management said they will release a full video that explains the historical references of the video.
Also, the group is multilingual. In their songs, they incorporate their native languages. There are 7 languages in total. And each member are from the different parts of our country. By the way, the Philippines has over 100 languages. They debuted last February 14 with the song kbye which is also multilingual.
