What are the Basics of Paganism?

  • Having been a Norse Pagan for nearly a whole decade, I put out a request that people send me questions they had about Norse Paganism or Paganism in general. This is my response.
    Paganism as a whole is so intricate and multifaceted; however, research is the foundation for building your practice. There is no right and wrong way, and no two pagans will be the same!

    This is a really good touch upon the generalised thoughts and tips for those who are planning to practice paganism or the different branches it has.
    I'm personally looking for this kinds of videos right now, where they focus on the much broader topics of things before delving into a particular practice.
    As someone who really is still just looking for the introduction of the introduction, this really helped clear out some confusions and questions.

    • @NashNoLastName
      @NashNoLastName  4 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Hey! Thanks and thank for watching!
      Witchcraft and paganism are separate and you dont have to practice one to practice the other. I think the connotation of witchcraft being essential to paganism stems from Wicca and its popularity; however, overall it's completely up to you if you want to practice witchcraft or not. It's not a requirement. Sometimes it's best to start off without it, and integrate it as you grow, it can easily be overwhelming if you try to learn about a specific path and witchcraft at the same time.
      Hope this helps!

    • @NashNoLastName
      @NashNoLastName  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I'm sure there is someone who will disagree, but I think you absolutely could. Everyone's practice is different and if you wanted to consider yourself a witch without practicing traditional witchcraft you certainly could. Magic can be found in many different forms and there's no "you have to do X thing" to be considered a witch.

      To Isaac, whatever you decide, good luck with it. I'm sorry you've had trauma with Christians and Christianity. I know a lot of people who've become pagan due to similar reasons (and others who have completely opted out of religion)
      Side note: paganism isn't "sinful" in any way, simply different beliefs/practices etc. There is also eclectic paganism, where you may mix many things into your beliefs/practices, including other religions such as Christianity.

And, all European tribes were pagan before the Romans pushed Christianity everywhere.

    As someone who grew up roman catholic but didn't really buy into it and found much more interest in the affects of religion on one another or how they play off of and borrow from each other over time and how that eventually manifests itself in the real world, i'm keenly interested in how the pagan community may feel about Christianity, presently and historically. Or if theres even a general consensus on it or if it may range from gushy love to vehemous hate, depending on who you talk to and/or what historical paganism they may lean towards/identify with.
    Thank you!

      Hello, as a Norse Pagan, I honestly see Christianity as divisive. Mention being pagan almost anywhere or on a forum and you will see what I mean.
      But I have seen their faith do good things for them too. I still think being Christian or Catholic to somehow make most "holier than thou" and they will let you know that when Jesus comes we will burn in "Hell".

      Really there is not right or wrong place to start. I would recommend reading the Poetic Edda, or even Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology book (his retelling of the stories is really well done). And then branch out from there. There are also some great groups online where you can meet other Norse Pagans and ask questions. It's a lot of research and homework sometimes, but it can also be fun and enlightening.
      I hope this helps at least a little!

    Jackson Crawford is a philologist specialising in the Old Norse language. Therefore, his works are going to be coming primarily from that perspective. So it's best to use Jackson Crawford where linguistics would be helpful, but not to rely on him too much when it comes to the culture and religious practices of the Old Norse. He's not a bad source on these things, but it's a good idea to corroborate what he says on them and look for anything that he might have missed.

    My questions:
    1. Do you believe the gods exist as independent entities that have agency even if we don't believe in them?
    1a. what would be best evidence of this? (I am open to believing they exist)
    2. If they do exist, what have you gathered they think about the world now?

    • @NashNoLastName
      @NashNoLastName  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      These are great questions.
      Personally, I believe the gods are each their own independent entities, each with their own goals, preferences, and personalities. While there's no concrete evidence of them as such, through my own experiences I made the choice to believe. This is due to various signs, dreams, and feelings that I've had throughout the past decade that have helped solidify them in my mind.
      An argument can definitely be made that those signs are just a trick of the mind seeing what it wants to see. Similar to seeing images in static if you look long enough. But, ultimately believing in the gods is a personal choice and no two people will have the same outlooks. Even in larger religions, such as Christianity, this is prevalent given the large number of differing denominations.
      Assuming they do exist, I like to believe that they have a fairly optimistic view of the world today in some regards. (Such as the resurgence of people believing in them) I think that while it's important to honor old traditions, the gods ultimately have evolved to suit the times, and the internet has definitely helped fuel the resurgence of belief in them. For that, I think they admire how far we've come.
      I hope this makes sense, I tried to keep this relatively short, but with questions like this, it's easy for me to write a thesis!

    So what is the Pagan view (or your pagan view) on the resurrection of Christ? Christ and the apostles claim that sharing in the resurrection is the only way to get into the “afterlife”. Do contemporary pagans say there are other ways to the “afterlife”? Are you even concerned about the afterlife?
    (Also don’t worry about being received as racist, the overwhelming majority of people will not perceive you as racist so long as you don’t do anything racist. Don’t pander to people who expect you to prove you non-racist credentials).

    • @jaxthewolf4572
      @jaxthewolf4572 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most pagans don't believe in the teachings of christianity. It depends on the pagan religion. For instance, in norse paganism you have to die in battle to enter Valhalla, if you don't you go to Helheim or some other afterlife. In both Egyptian paganism and Greek paganism, you have to be a good person to enter paradise. In wicca, all people enter paradise (Summerland), there is no spiritual punishment. Most pagans aren't concerned with the afterlife, but living their lives the best way that they can, with the afterlife becoming a concern when it's time to leave this world. So far entrance into a particular afterlife (with the main exceptions being wicca and Suomenusko) in nearly all paganism depends on your actions. Hope this helps

      @way2tehdawn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jaxthewolf4572 So is it linked to your ethnicity then? If you are born or feel an affinity for the Kingdom of Norway and you die (via battle or peacefully) you end up in the Norse afterlife. But in Egypt it would be the underworld?
      What would happen to Christians and Jews in this world view they just die and lie in the grave for all eternity?

    • @jaxthewolf4572
      @jaxthewolf4572 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@way2tehdawn Yes and no. You may end up in the afterlife of the land you were born but your after death place is also linked to your beliefs so yes if you believe in the Norwegian afterlife and aspire to go there, you will go. For those who want to go to the Egyptian afterlife, they can still go even if they arent egyptian. They just have to want it. As for jews and Christians, they will go to their afterlives. For Christians, heaven, for jews, the world to come. In paganism, everyone goes to the afterlife location that goes with their beliefs.
