    Steve was very gracious about supporting me in the 1990's for Nationals road and track. Glad to see that the company is in good hands. Love my Hed Vanquish Pro wheels. CX wheels! I raced those!

    Andrew was a lot of help this week in trying to get a 2009(ish) Stinger fixed.

    Over 40+ years ago I bought my first road frame from Steve Hed when he had a shop in a garage just south of Minneapolis. Eventually he had a bike shop in St. Paul, MN. Steves old bike shop is still functioning in St. Paul and is now owned by Dan Casebeer who at one time held the U.S. Hour Record. HED Co. had a booth at a triathlon in my area several years ago where I learned from his wife he had passed away. Around 2010 I bought a pair of HED Ardennes aluninum wheels for my Pinarello. They are still perfect, hubs and all.

    I've had 4 Ardennes and 2 Jet 6s over the years. The first 2 Ardennes I had from around 2015 didn't have the best bearings, but they improved the hub design several years ago, and the wheels I've had since then have been bulletproof. I ride between 12,500 and 15,000 miles per year and really beat the crap out of my bike, such as not slowing down much to cross railroad tracks, but never had any issues with them that weren't of my own doing (car vs bike and a ridiculous pothole/crater that no wheel could survive). I was skeptical of the carbon fairing on the Jet 6 at first, but never had a problem after about 25,000 miles of use. I found the later hubs (about 2016?) to be good quality and, with the exception of one wheel that needed some minor truing, the others were all perfectly built. The freehub body does get pitted from Shimano cogs even when torqued down nice and tight, but that's my only real gripe. Yes, you can get lighter and/or cheaper wheels, but I'd much rather have a set of wheels that I know are durable, well-built and trouble-free.

    11:55 Finally someone of the "Big names" acknowledges the aero factor in MTB. I've done my whole bike with Aero in-mind Soon I'll give birth to the Alpha Airwolf. How does sub 8 kilo full sus dual drive Mtb sound to you? Will keep ya posted. I bet once you've tried it you won't wanna go back to 20th century gen bikes.

    Great video! Does that mean all of their aluminium wheels are no longer hand built?

    • @GravelCyclist
      @GravelCyclist  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      All of HED's wheels are laced by hand, so that portion of hand built still applies. The Holland machine does a lot of truing work on the aluminium wheels, but I'm not 100% sure if a further touch up is handled by the wheel building staff.
