      Not sure about Milan, the Poggio is too short and there is always a sprinter coming back in the last kms to spoil the party. To win PR, he'll have to gain weight and sacrifice a lot in terms of Grand Tours for that year.

    Merckx won 19 monuments (he won them all five at least twice). He won 3 world titles. He won 11 grand tours (5 tours de france, 5 giros d'italia, 1 vuelta). Pogacar is nowhere near any of those yet. Let's hope he continues until he matches the record of Merckx.

      and was caught doping... i still think pog dopes but the fact that merckx was caught just rubs me the wrong way. I want the goat to have a "clean history". Thats why i also have a problem with Messi since he got PEDs when he was a kid which was fair since he was missing som genes but for me that still rubs me the wrong way.

    • @Marltiod
      @Marltiod หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      And faced a lot less competition. Cycling was not a global sport in Merckx era. Merckx is the goat based on his numbers but the 2024 Pogacar is the best cyclist ever as of now.

    • @Blog4Justice
      @Blog4Justice หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Pogacar doesn't need to get hung up on matching everything Merckx did because he is going to set his own benchmarks, which I believe will include some or all of the following: a record number of TDF wins; the record for the number of individual TDF stage wins; the next three World Championships (Kigali 2025, Montreal 2026, Haute-Savoie 2027); the record for the number of wins in a single monument (Il Lombardia); equalling or breaking the record for wins in Liege-Bastogne-Liege; record wins in Strade Bianche; at least two wins in each of the Giro and Vuelta. I would be surprised if he rides Roubaix any time soon, but I do think he might go for a win in the rainbow jersey at Flanders.

    At 7:52 a photo of Fausto Coppi appears while talking of Eddy Merckx! Moreover, Merckx did not fail to win the olympics. More simply, in his days the Olympics were not open to professional cyclists. They became so only in 1996.

    Pogačar's problem at Milan San Remo is an extremely weak team. If for one year the best people from the team were willing to be domestics for him, the situation would be completely different. The Cipressa and the subsequent flat section need to be driven as fast as possible so that the rivals on the Poggio are tired. The UAE has never been able to do that. Most of the time on Cipressa they only destroy themselves, and the opponents then manage to regenerate in the subsequent slow section. Generally, the races where he doesn't have the support of the team and the race is not difficult enough for him to win alone will be difficult for Pogačar. They will never be as weak as the Slovenians at the World Cup, but at San Remo it was just always very weak from the UAE.
