Well that makes I had it happen to me not once but twice here in New York one time in the spring we are steelhead fishing me and my body and we put steelhead on the Stringer in the f****** bald eagle came right down and grab it right off the Stringer luckily he couldn't get it off the Stringer and then the second time I was ice fishing and it was a perch and it wasn't an eagle I think it was a red tail hawk or some kind of Hawk came down and grab the perch off the ice but he was smart and he grabbed the biggest 1 haha
Yes! I love seeing you guys come to my state and fish! Heck in Das Boat S2 you came to my town! And now your enjoying our hard water like a true Minnesotan! Just great to see!
Really does seem more like hunting than fishing. Especially that panicked whisper he gives to Janis: "Pike pike!" Like when your treestand buddy nudges you to give you a heads up.
I love that MeatEater exposed us to Janis and Cal, them and Steve are the hunters/anglers I use to describe the type of conservationists and outdoorsman we should all strive to be.
As somebody who has never been super keen on fishing, and having more whitetails under my belt than fish kept, this may have just persuaded me to try a different version of fishing. 👌
Do they fold in half? Most holes seem to be 8" and that seems to be the freshwater size for them, might not get through the hole in most cases when just checking for a spot.
Great episode my papa always told me thats how he got threw the depression spear fishing with a 10 pound lead ball on handle end just had to drop mo throw. He always said it was the easiest way to fish
According to the numbers Wisconsin has 1/3 of its 1.4 million anglers ice fish. On the other hand Minnesota says 10% of its 1.5 million anglers ice fish. so that would mean Wisconsin has more ice fishers. plus Wisconsin has 15,000 plus lakes compared to Minnesota/s 10,000 lakes. but ice fishing is fun anywhere you got some hard water.
If it is, as far as I know whitefish have a sort of nocturnal migratory behavior in spawn. We target them at night, and you won't see much of anyone out going for them. Pike are practically garbage. Ignoring the fact that you are slowly poisoning yourself with the high mercury levels in them, they are boney and annoying to filet as you have to Y them out. Whitefish are a delicacy up here, especially smoked.
THIS IS A TRUE STORY. The events depicted in this video took place in Minnesota. At the request of the deer, the names have been changed. Out of respect for the fish, the rest has been told exactly as it occurred. -Janis Chronicles
Jeezus i wanna ice fish so damn bad just found out that my state has it WA state but don't really know enough anyone from WA wanna teach ill do the hard work if i can just get alittle learning in ? Thanx everyone at meat eater the content is amazing
it’s really not difficult man. the biggest thing is making sure you’re safe & the ice is safe. always carry ice picks with you and wear them around your neck just in case you go in. if you can find a local pond, that’d be your best bet starting out. just pick up some ice rods and jigs and an auger. if you don’t want to break the bank, get a manual auger you crank by hand. it’s a ton of work and a pain in the ass, but way cheaper than an electric or gas powered auger.
Thanx guy's either you of you guy's in WA State i got a cabin in northeast WA If you guys wanna help a fella learn your invited i will watch and take your guy's advice and hopefully i can do some hardwater fishing
@@jaimehernandez7435 i’m about a thousand miles away from WA, lol. but there’s really not much to it man. the biggest thing is being safe. make sure you’ve got safe ice and the tools to get yourself out of a bad situation if it happens. if you try it out and decide to get serious about ice fishing, then you can get better gear and a vexilar or something like that.
He said regulations are "one over 26 inches" so you just have to pay closer attention and pass up any additional fish that look bigger than that if you do get one. Obviously a little easier when you're fishing with a rod and reel. They're intended to allow you to keep a trophy, but increase harvest of smaller more abundant fish that are stunting the population. It's similar to duck limits where you can only have so many hens.
That's much later than the whitefish spawn I believe. I was spearing the spawning run in AK, and we were wading and stalking them as they worked upstream to their spawns. If they were on their way early October in AK, and the water was just freezing, I'd say you guys down in MN, in that deep of a freeze, you're catching resident whitefish, or the stragglers that got lost on their way back from spawn. Nowhere near the actual spawn period though. If it is in their spawn window, and they are behaving differently than AK Whitefish
Janis guides Rinella on how to hunt.. Rinella is decent but Janis is a master.. there has been many a story at Zero Point Zero during filming of Steven getting frustrated and moping by a tree while Janis gives him a pep talk wipes his tears with a kleenex and show him where his errors were so they can finish an episode.
Love you, love your show, gotta say tho, wearing that fur hat you bear a pretty fair likeness of Conan O'Brien, might consider a different hat, or the game won't fear you, just saying ^.^
Went fishing in SD and put the fish outside on the ice... an eagle came down a SWIPED IT!!! The stinker!!

Thank you MeatEater crew for putting out such good videos. It makes me feel like a kid reliving some old outdoor memories with my Dad.
These shouldn't be free to watch lol Thanks Rinella!!!
dont screw up my favorite youtube channel lol
Really does seem more like hunting than fishing. Especially that panicked whisper he gives to Janis: "Pike pike!" Like when your treestand buddy nudges you to give you a heads up.
This is my favourite new series. Definitely getting me excited for ice fishing.
I love that MeatEater exposed us to Janis and Cal, them and Steve are the hunters/anglers I use to describe the type of conservationists and outdoorsman we should all strive to be.
that read and black box @4:52 brought back memories. my dad had a bunch of those
That hit just a strong nostalgia chord for me. I'm glad I wasn't the only one!
Lol me too, those are the boxes books of checks used to come in.
Brings back great memories of spearing in southern MN. Great times!
Love it! MN native and nothing beats pickled pike out of a spearing hole ❤️
Hey Mark, nice to finally see the episode come out! Hope all is well out there :)
I love this series! I am completely new to ice fishing and it's great to see how it's done
Janis you are the man... definite bucket list to catch and cook with you.
For hot ice tour is so fun to watch. Going to have to make this an every year thing.
As somebody who has never been super keen on fishing, and having more whitetails under my belt than fish kept, this may have just persuaded me to try a different version of fishing. 👌
Haha total opposite, kept many fish, no whitetails. Been huting small game for a few years, and hoping to draw my first buck tag next season
I want to see an ice fishing Deep Drop Boys if that even possible.
Let's see steve put that fancy reel to work on a couple foot long rod lol
That sounds awesome.
Those carved decoys are amazing!
Anyone else notice the bottle of Meateater branded brown liquor there between the chairs at the end? I guess ice fishing is the same everywhere...
I'm from Mn and love spearing!!! You boys need a Secchi disk!

MeatEater killing the TH-cam game~!!!!
Hey, can we get that fish cake recipe? It looks great. Also, we need to see y'all do the southern version of this: frog gigging.
That fur hat wouldn’t be too much fun in the south.
Would love that fish cake recipe as well please
Ice fishing is definitely on the bucket list for this Texan.
You ain't missing much. If I didn't have to ice fish again I wouldn't mind..
Nice to see the US boys enjoying a Canadian Moosehead on the ice!
I love a good Moosie
Thanks for all the advice man!!!!
I really like this fur hat ice tour!
I always use a golf ball teaser for pike too!
If I would of known Janis was in Minnesota I would’ve bought him a beer
Spearing is just like sitting in a tree stand but it is harder on your back.
Also love hint at Sturgeon ❤️
Awesome to see a couple BHA Chapters Board Members on Meateater media.
Man! I wanna try this so bad! I love jugging catfish and spinning trout but when you live in TN you just don't get a chance to go ice fishing.
I always get excited for ice fishing until I am ice fishing. I'll end up at a river slaying some steelhead or salmon by the end of the day lol
Put me in a tent on the ice with a spear and some Makers Mark.
Hopefully catch more than a buzz. That looks like a great time.
at least one catch is gauranteed.
Moosehead beer! NB is on the map!

Janis choosing whitefish over pike made me a bit sad on the inside... but that's ok. I still LOVE this show.
Just made my day!
Man, awesome episode!
Anyone able to tell the song at 14:30? That's a jammer but Shazam is a no go.
Love all the videos. What I want to know is how to get me a beaver hat with ear flaps to keep my 64 year old ears warm.
based on the title; easily could've been a series on Dahmer
great video!
Next episode "The dinosaur of fish"?? My guess is >>> STURGEON!!!
You guys should try bowfishing snakeheads in Maryland
Minnesota has the biggest ice fishing tournament in the country.
Great content!
Can’t someone tell me what song that plays when he spears the northern “ I keep my money in the bank” Jazz type of song!? Plz

Crazy that you can spear whitefish but bass are a no go.

"It must be from a previous life because I haven't done much spear chuckin'."
so what happens when you spear a fish and it’s half and inch too short? just throw it’s spear’d body back into the water? lmao
Fish camo
I'll never understand why Americans don't bonk their fish. Bonk your damn fish guys it's basic respect.
I missed something... you spear it then measure it. What if its to short?

i haven't done much spear chucking either
Here in IRELAND people spear salmon all the time . Its illegal of course but no body gives a fuck. The wardens finish work at 5 so people fish at 6
bleeding out the fish out when ice fishing ?
the blood itself will taint the meat so yeah
I was going to ask the same question, they left them sitting around for a while without bleeding them out.

You haven't had pike done right then.
Pike is one of my favorite fresh water fish next to crappie.

Nothing like spearing. I spear white fish behind the Tawas police post in Michigan. Standing on the slippery rocks, green head lamp on......whack!.
