1:00 trust me. Nobody knows what to put in pljeskavica. I swear we all just randomly picked toppings when we were little kids and never changed them since. So put whatever you think is good.
@ProdByMare oldones especially the ones who make pljeskavica say that onion and hot peppers are the only thing that utilize taste, everything rest change the taste of meat it self...i personally use ketchup and mustard with onion and hot peppers sometimes i add cabbage, thats with i grown-up. New generations make new decisions...
Hey Po'Jo, those skulls built in that tower are actually a Serbian skulls that Otomans used for building that tower after they killed all Serbian rebels. They have left those skulls to scare Serbian people. The skull tower is there as a reminder, now as a reminder what our ancestors needed to overcome so we can have our freedom.
@@nikolakekic9462 its sad story, it sayz that serbian workers had to skin all skulls in which many of them had relatives in rebels, and built it! They cried when they did it under a threat of death!
Acctually, Scull tower is a result of the Cegar battle on hill near Nis where Stevan Sindjelic with ten times smaller army of rebellions shoot in the barrels of gun powder when he realized that he will be defeated and killed him self, his boys and all the Ottoman soldiers. When local Ottoman leader found that, he became so angry and gave an order that Scull tower must be made from Serbian rebellions skinned heads as some one said, to be as a reminder what will happend when someone decides to raise against Ottoman empire. Of course, he just got Serbians furious and added oil over the already burning fire.

I grew up in these areas and I've been to every corner, including that rooftop 😊 You missed out on some really good food (Mrak, Dva Jarana, Brka, Anton, ...) that you should really check out. Regarding safety, there are no ghettos in Serbia. Even during the wars in the 90s I'd be comfortable walking around at night alone anywhere. The area you were in is super family friendly... The esthetics can fool you cause it's all old poorer commie blocks around, but there's almost no violence or crime happening there at all... Yes, there are some extremist groups out there, but you're very unlikely to run into them, the numbers are very small. Also, it's winter now so not many people out, in warmer weather kids and families are out and about even late at night. Relax and enjoy, and try to take in the tempo of life and the streets. This is an old culture and it has a very high level of community for everyone, including foreigners.
It's definitely not as dangerous as you presented it. It is a part of the city where most of the best students are located, nearby you have the Medical and Philosophy Faculties. It is really relaxed and most friendly part of the city, nobody is scanning for anything it's just all about respect .
Hey dude, in the end when you said "he's about to ask a random person to open the door.." This is a shock for people from the West. In Serbia it's a bit more of a collective society which opens up for "asking random people". When I was a child in rural Serbia (I'm born in Scandinavia) you usually went straight into somebody else's house "hellooo Tommy are you hoooome"? No knocking, no notification you are coming, you just go straight in 😂😂😂😂 If you were shocked about "random person", what on Earth would you say when you sit home watching TV and your buddy suddenly shows up at your place 😂😂😂😂
@PoJoTheBackPacker What about the movies? Didn't Steve Q Urkel and Fresh Prince just walk in without notification? This is no reflection of American culture at all?
"St. Sava church" 🤦♂️ Park is named St. Sava's park, and church name is church of the Holy Emperor Constantine and Empress Helen. Constantine I (born February 27, after 280 ce?, Naissus, Moesia [now Niš, Serbia]-died May 22, 337, Ancyrona, near Nicomedia, Bithynia [now İzmit, Turkey]) was the first Roman emperor to profess Christianity. He not only initiated the evolution of the empire into a Christian state but also provided the impulse for a distinctively Christian culture that prepared the way for the growth of Byzantine and Western medieval culture.
@@PoJoTheBackPacker also would add that the part where they said that that part is dangerous with whatever stories you heard are completely false. Boulevard is one of the safest if not the safest part of the city, most crowded one and getting even more crowded than the city center.
An Excellent video. The two youths were very friendly and accommodating. I truly commend them on their hospitality. Keep improving every day, as you travel around the world / globe.
Hey Po Jo, welcome to Nis! I just wanted to give some context around the "hoods" here. Before WW2, Serbian cities weren't that different from those in, say Western Europe. They weren't as developed TBH since Serbians gained freedom from the Ottoman Empire formally in 1878, and development under Ottomans was very restricted so we only had about 50 years to rebuild the country. WW1 happened and then WW2 followed and most of Serbia (Yugoslavia) was demolished, so the government had to build cheap housing for people to have a roof over their heads. Those cheap housing areas in Serbia today look like hoods but in reality, they're not. Ugly, depressing, and unmaintained YES, but they are not areas where anyone is in any danger of going. Normal working people live there and there are no gangs. I'm not saying there isn't any crime in Serbia, but it's very, very low, and you should be totally fine walking alone at night in any area. If you look at the stats, Belgrade is similar in terms of safety to Copenhagen(one of the safest cities in Europe) and Belgrade has 3X the population so that says a lot.
Keep travelling the world Pojo your videos are awesome . You embrace different cultural perspectives very nice of you . Food colour ethnicity, environment , your all in .
Po Jo, if i wasn't in NY right now, I'd kidnap you to the north at my moms house in a small village near Subotica to try some more country style foods, like: Nasuvo (short pasta like meals with ditterent combos like salty or sweet cheese, cabbage, poppy seeds, potato and onion, sweet corn meal...), Then GULASH or PAPRIKASH, then PUNJENA PAPRIKA or PUNJEN KUPUS (cabbage or peppers filled with rice and ground meat, cooked in a pepper soup), some amazing sweet stuff like PRINCES KROFNE (Hollow crispy shells filled with custard)... If you decide to go to SUBOTICA, let me know I'll hit my brother up and you'll get a village style tour and hosting of a lifetime. My mom knows some english, but my brother is fluent.
@PoJoTheBackPacker Lol, Serbia is also one of few countries that you can get foodboarded at (hosts not letting you leave until you eat everything at the table)
On pljeskavica mostly you must have cabbage,šopska salata Pavlaka,onions..and (when they have it)paprika’s oil -they make spicy 🌶️ salads and that oil little bit inside is❤️

I just watched all your videos from Serbia, and I can tell you picked up quite a few excellent recommendations from Jibri (whose ex wife is from Niš, btw) and our locals haha. I lived in Niš for several years before moving to California, and my old apartment used to be in one of the buildings at the beginning of this video. 😂 It brought me joy to see the old neighborhood for a second as you're walking around. I'm glad to see you're having a great time there! Although, you're making me miss the food even more. 😂
Excellent video, man. We in Serbia always like to welcome foreigners very well. If you are ever near the place Svrljig, you have to try belmuz. Svrljig is about 20 km from Nis
personally i think the best thing to put in a pljeskavica is nothing except onions. maybe tomatoes, cucumbers, or cabbage if you want a little something that resembles a salad, but the rest (like ketchup or mayo or other condiments) imo mask the taste a lot. so id suggest giving the "bland" one a shot at least once!
just a few corrections I feel I have to address.... - in that market, most of the things are local, some fruits/vegs are imported as it's not their season in Serbia, and some of the sellers there are just that, not producers (farmers) - that church is actually named Church of Saints Emperor Constantine and Empress Helena, in the St. Sava park. - what you mentioned regarding people from blocks at 20:05, it's prob because they usually don't see a lot of black people (even though there are some in Nis)... and it's def not a "no go" zone... maybe in the nights only... otherwise it's just depressing lol - that mountain he pointed to, doubt it very much it's kopaonik... but beautiful either way... and as always, glad you had fun and hope you stay more and enjoy
@@PoJoTheBackPacker I believe it's a good idea to forget a bit about stereotypes or at least investigate (but perhaps that is not how you wanna do videos) about place you're in. PoJo if you come back to belgrade you have to go to an partizan basketball game the atmosphere is just crazy you would enjoy it 100% (you said in the 1st episode you would support partizan though)
Nice video, about pljeskavica, put some pavlaka in it, its like a dairy cream type product and it will make the pljeskavica much more tasty. You can experiment, onions and tucana paprika (ground paprika) are a must, lettuce and pavlaka are good etc. Cheers!
Borek actually very easy to make. All u need is filo dough or something similar. U can find it in USA(the dough). If u ever want to learn to make it hit me up, I’ll send recipe. Super easy to make bro
Some old school places that makes pljeskavice and cevapi have just couple of ingredients...onion,cream,cabbage. You should try, from basic combinations, just onion and cream(pavlaka) to more crazy ones where you go nuts and put everything. :) But, if you gonna go just onion and pavlaka, go to recommended place, trusted, it has to be fresh and meaty :)
pleaseee stay safe... nothing bad happened but it could've. you can't trust everyone here :( i wouldn't feel safe being with random guys. they seemed nice enough but still better safe than sorry..!
I'm from AZ and I live in Nis currently, there are 2 cool places you can visit. Milky (pancake S tier place) And Detroit bar (21+ ofc) 😭 We can hangout if you're stayin this winter in Nis
I recommend you to eat this in the right way: cevapi + 1 or 2 regular hot or hot grilled chiliies + diced onions + shopska salad + bread coke/pepsi, water, beer, are the drinks that pair well- we like to dip the cevap (or pleskavica) into that red chili powder that`s placed on the table. nothing more needed. no ajvar, kajmak, ketchup or sauce. very simple but hard to find outside of ex-yu countries
Dude, I’m a Serbian living in Miami, and before it was NYC… those kids were messing with you or something- there is absolutely no bad neighborhood in Serbia! Doesn’t matter the city, you will never find places like Overtown MIA, Bronx, or similar… But in any case it was interesting seeing your perspective of Serbia:)
Hi Po'Jo..I think that you are being scammed by those two guys 😂... There's no "hoods" in Nis. Nis is one of the safest cities in Serbia. Best regards and wishes.
Haha i don’t think so much active today like maybe back in the day but i think if a ruckus was to be caused or maybe someone from the opposing side came in some ultras somewhere would come out and brawl right? Haha
16:55 the church is called "Church of the holy emperor Constantine and empress Jelena" but the park is called Saint Sava park. That's a common misconception here
im in small town "Bačinci" near "Šid" City,Pljeskavica here at Dek's is greatest ive ever tasted "Leskovački Roštilj Dek",if you do visit and i happen to see ya that would be cool, tho i dont go out much in Autumn because of the cold, but it would be cool to hear your thoughts on it live
So in Korean War Turkish soldiers would put severed heads at entrances of camps to scare Chinese and North Korean soldiers from entering 😅 this is what I’ve heard/read from several sources and one was a Korean vet of USA
That's definitely not a hood that you had in mind. It's the most popular part of the city, absolutely no organized gang activities or something similar. It's just depressing, soviet-style building blocks. Ugly as hell, mostly, but full of everyday, normal people.
Shame ...Kids from Niš don't know that church name is "Church of Saints Emperor Constantine and Empress Helena"... they know only that this park is st.Sava park and they think church hsve the same name....They live in Niš, birthplace of Constantine the Great...and they don't know that this church is builded in honor of Constantine the Great ...
The pljeskavica you bought that was filled with cheese is called a gurmanska pljeskavica and if you dont like the cheese just order a normal pljeskavica :)
I'd like to chip in, there are no "hoods" in Serbia because we dont have a petty crime issue, however there is a rampant number of organized crime throughout the whole country but 90% of people will not come in contact with any of that. There are lower income neighborhoods in each city but nothing like Compton for example, and quite ironically, that particular area in your video is considered somewhat luxurious.
Seks, droga, Bodiroga :D I hope you visited the Pekara Anton for burek with cheese and i see you had fun exploring the neighbourhood where my grandma is. Good video, but i am scared of heights, i couldnt watch the end without tingle in my nuts :S
The boys really took you for a ride. Made you think you were going to dangerous areas and that no tourist or black person has ever gone there. Those are just normal buildings where normal people live and where you can walk at night safely. No group of tough guys will come to beat you up for any reason let alone for being a tourist or black. They only look scary because they look like soviet Russia buildings but they are actually pretty good compared to buildings they build now. They are sought after to buy because the building quality was better then. The funniest part was saying that the market is super dangerous. It's just a normal market, a bit run down but a normal market. Serbia is really safe, check out the world safety index. The most dangerous thing on the street would be reckless drivers and stray dogs. Unless you do crime. But if it made your trip more exciting it's a good thing. :D
@@letmepickmynameidiot4832 i don’t think i said this market is dangerous i think i was speaking generally in other countries the markets are not the safest places to be
There is no such thing as a "hood" in Nis, the marketplace at 12:30 is located in one of the safest areas of the city lmao, those guys were full of crap
I am literally crying at “dangerous neighbourhoods”, A there are non in Nis (or Serbia for that matter); but B this neighborhood is quite upscale being the mini universe for all the medical students and the vicinity of a clinical centre (new and old). The boys trolled you massively :) I could and I would and I did walked this dangerous neighborhood this summer.
@@MrAnaKitty haha hey I’m a foreigner i don’t know. In America we have prestigious schools right next to the absolute ghetto. Even the White House is in absolute shiiii hole. Hey man you never know lol i had a good time either way 🫡
@ no it’s fine, I get it. The neighbourhood you visited was built in 50s/ 60s and 70 s and 80 s- with addition of new buildings built in 2000s. Just because they are not maintained (aka grafitti) doesn’t mean it’s a ghetto, there is just a lack of money to repaint when needed, refresh facades- but you were as safe there as you were where your hotel was. I think it’s adorable - your quest for knowledge and travel. I am also a type of traveler that sometimes wants a new country to “suprise me” so I don’t read beforehand apart from necessary things (visa, money and similar). But I also don’t make general conclusions once I am there and start exploring it - videos should also bring some objective view. For instance people watching your videos and never been to Nis could believe your observation (especially the part you are claiming that you could tell “ it could happen at any moment- you felt tension building”. This is also funny because you walked at that market - and a granny offered socks for free - with her next door neighbour seller translating. At that point you were almost sure that there were no black people around- where in fact, there are many (in any of the neighbourhoods - this is the one that would have many students from all over the world, some black as well). Anyhow. I wish you the best time on your Balkan travels, just wish you either researched before making videos or at least try to edit them before posting so they would be more accurate or interesting. Because to me, it’s what travel blogs are about. Learning exploring and correcting the first impressions

That cheese is called you eat with pljeskavica is kajmak. It's amazing!
Lets go Pojo!
My boy 🫡
Missed this one. It’s going to make me hungry, I already feel it 😅
Some old school places that makes pljeskavice and cevapi have just couple of ingredients...onion,cream,cabbage. You should try, from basic combinations, just onion and cream(pavlaka) to more crazy ones where you go nuts and put everything. :) But, if you gonna go just onion and pavlaka, go to recommended place, trusted, it has to be fresh and meaty :)
Thanks for the recommendation!
Bravo
pleaseee stay safe... nothing bad happened but it could've. you can't trust everyone here :( i wouldn't feel safe being with random guys. they seemed nice enough but still better safe than sorry..!
istripovao se da ce neko da izleti da ga bije 😄
😂😂
Serbian men are tall and handsome ❤
I'm from AZ and I live in Nis currently, there are 2 cool places you can visit.
Milky (pancake S tier place)
And Detroit bar (21+ ofc)
😭
We can hangout if you're stayin this winter in Nis
Nice man i like Arizona i had fun when i went there. I’m not in niš right now but should i come back we can meet up
Beautiful view
I know right
Ok, I changed my mind, I'm not going to bed yet. 🤣
😂😂
I recommend you to eat this in the right way:
cevapi
+ 1 or 2 regular hot or hot grilled chiliies
+ diced onions
+ shopska salad
+ bread
coke/pepsi, water, beer, are the drinks that pair well-
we like to dip the cevap (or pleskavica) into that red chili powder that`s placed on the table.
nothing more needed. no ajvar, kajmak, ketchup or sauce.
very simple but hard to find outside of ex-yu countries
lol I’ll try rhisn
You need a new best friend if he's eating, and you're not. Period. But I'm glad the hospitality is good in Serbia
lmao yea not anymore of course lol
I am glad that you visited my city 😊 I hope you have a good time.
Dude, I’m a Serbian living in Miami, and before it was NYC… those kids were messing with you or something- there is absolutely no bad neighborhood in Serbia! Doesn’t matter the city, you will never find places like Overtown MIA, Bronx, or similar…
But in any case it was interesting seeing your perspective of Serbia:)
😂😂 yea i don’t think I’ll be finding an overtown here
Welcome to Nis
Niš is beautiful. I've never been here but I have to visit this city.
Hi Po'Jo..I think that you are being scammed by those two guys 😂... There's no "hoods" in Nis. Nis is one of the safest cities in Serbia. Best regards and wishes.
Not scammed, those are just some kids that wanted to pose as smooth criminals :)
That's a common misconception here
@@vladimirmitevski5205 ahhh okay thank you for this
im in small town "Bačinci" near "Šid" City,Pljeskavica here at Dek's is greatest ive ever tasted "Leskovački Roštilj Dek",if you do visit and i happen to see ya that would be cool, tho i dont go out much in Autumn because of the cold, but it would be cool to hear your thoughts on it live
So in Korean War Turkish soldiers would put severed heads at entrances of camps to scare Chinese and North Korean soldiers from entering 😅 this is what I’ve heard/read from several sources and one was a Korean vet of USA
for pljeskavica, just try some regular mayo and cabbage salad, or ketcup and cabbage and ofc a bit of TUCANA PAPRIKA (ALEVA)
That's definitely not a hood that you had in mind. It's the most popular part of the city, absolutely no organized gang activities or something similar.
It's just depressing, soviet-style building blocks. Ugly as hell, mostly, but full of everyday, normal people.
Lol
Shame ...Kids from Niš don't know that church name is "Church of Saints Emperor Constantine and Empress Helena"... they know only that this park is st.Sava park and they think church hsve the same name....They live in Niš, birthplace of Constantine the Great...and they don't know that this church is builded in honor of Constantine the Great ...
This is true that’s why i asked twice 😂
go to Prokuplje its a small city next to Nis
My friends are from there maybe next trip
The pljeskavica you bought that was filled with cheese is called a gurmanska pljeskavica and if you dont like the cheese just order a normal pljeskavica :)
No the cheese was good now i don’t enjoy the regular pljeskavica as much lol
kupus, luk, pavlaka, aleva
I'd like to chip in, there are no "hoods" in Serbia because we dont have a petty crime issue, however there is a rampant number of organized crime throughout the whole country but 90% of people will not come in contact with any of that. There are lower income neighborhoods in each city but nothing like Compton for example, and quite ironically, that particular area in your video is considered somewhat luxurious.
Thanks for this comment
IDEMOOO NIŠ

Welcome bro, next time try to find someone who is actually to take you through Nis :)
Put on the Pleskavica some salad or kupus and senf thats just a dream but if u want put some onions on there
Seks, droga, Bodiroga :D
I hope you visited the Pekara Anton for burek with cheese and i see you had fun exploring the neighbourhood where my grandma is. Good video, but i am scared of heights, i couldnt watch the end without tingle in my nuts :S
I will when i come back lol thank you

Maybe when i come back
good pljeskavica you eat with onions, and a bad one you put eveerything on there
Lmao yalls onions are way stronger than ours in the USA idn what’s up with it
27:12 nije Kopaonik nego Jastrebac hahahhahah
When you asked the woman kolko kosta for the socks, she said back which ones darling in a way women usually speak only to their own kids 😂
😂
@@letmepickmynameidiot4832 😂😂😂
@@letmepickmynameidiot4832 i don’t think i said this market is dangerous i think i was speaking generally in other countries the markets are not the safest places to be
You have a wrong impressions about that part of Nis, behind residential units. It must be trauma from USA, or those teens told you some stories.
It’s trauma from the U.S.
And both
😂
Pljeskavica fire😅😅
It really was
Пљескавица само лук,алева и кајмак ❤️
Copy that
That is not St Sava curch. It Saints Emperor Constantine and Empress Jelena curch.
hahah profi na 8:59
He said "With a respect, I won't record in the church" and in next second he records it :D Lol
Lmao the kid i was with told me i could so i was like okay ill show it
@@PoJoTheBackPacker No worries, do you plan to stay in Nis?
@ for a day or two
hoods👍
next time you are eating ask for "Kajmak" I don't think there is english name for that
Its like milk fat quite popular topping with plejskavica
