I Walked The Streets Of TRINIDAD (Not What I Expected) 🇹🇹
#trinidad #travel #caribbean #trinidadandtobago
In this vlog i walk down a street i have been wanting to check out since coming to Trinidad. This was known as Charolette street here in Port of Spain and this is known as “Chinatown”. Now even though you may not see many Chinese people here they do own a majority of the buildings on this street. I ended up running into some Trinidadian content creators who put on a show for my friend and i. We told them we were heading to the park and they offered to walk with us the whole way. Hospitality in this country is some of the best I’ve ever experienced!

The British crown, the French, the Spanish, the Dutch and many others have laid claim to Trinidad and Tobago throughout our history. Our last owner was the British, under whom African slavery continued until global dislike of slavery reached a tipping point and it was subsequently abolished. Still needing workers to tend the lucrative British sugar, coffee and cocoa plantations, they brought in "Indentured Laborers" from India in 1845. There's a lot of misconception even amongst Trinis about what the payment for their work was, which was either a small plot of land (less than a half acre) or a free trip back to India, so naturally many chose to stay and start new lives, doing what they knew, farming and gardening. The African community points to this as an advantage that Indians received at our collective emancipation from the British crown in 1917, however it's often neglected to mention that some, not all, former African slaves were also granted land, and large portions too. In the time since, many Indians kept their heads down and kept working, leading to significant prosperity for the Indian community in the coming years. The Africans spent most of their time post Brits partying and living life, and who could blame them, they just escaped slavery, and in so doing, created the culture of Calypso and Soca through their musical protests against the injustices committed against them. This meant that there weren't as many African businesses, which fueled a hatred between Indians and Africans for many different reasons over many decades. There was much more of a racial divide among the older generations, a bitterness that endures to this day, however, over the last 20 years or so, the divide has been significantly shrinking, there's more to go, but we've been making real progress in righting the wrongs of the previous generations. Both Indians and Africans have their share of blame in that divide, both have wronged each other and both have taken advantage of the other, and both have been blind to their own wickedness. Both sides also recognize this reality and both sides are actively trying to fix our collective relationship, it's why Trinidad feels so happy and safe despite the constant gang killings, the gangs might hate each other, but the rest of us don't.

There are actually a couple inaccuracies in your assessment: 1. The plot of land given to former Indentured servants from India was not a 'payment' per se but rather compensation for the fact that the British had brought all these Indians to the Caribbean and then realized that they lacked the wherewithal to send most of them back (and I believe most would have chosen to go back) 2. No Afro Trinidadian views the granting of land to former indentured laborers as an advantage, how could they when most land given by the British was in undesirable areas and would eventually have to be distributed among the many children that Indian couples tended to make (almost always more than 5). 3. There is no recorded policy instituted by the British where they gave land to the formerly enslaved and in fact most land owning Afro trinis (of which there are many) acquired their land in the post independence era. 4. Indians indeed prospered in the post independence era but this was as much due to state support as hard work. Most were poor and/or illiterate at the onset of independence in 1962 and their rise coincided with the general rise in living standards across the Trinbagonian population. 5. Afro Trinidadians did not spend most of the post Brit years 'parting and living life' but rather building the institutions of state and most of the critical infrastructure in the country. There is a significant black professional class and a smaller but notable black business class that was largely built up during this era. 6. I would argue that both groups are very reluctant to admit any wrongdoing on their part and even less willing to even admit that ethnic relations require fixing.

@@Rman775 "There was much more of a racial divide among the older generations, a bitterness that endures to this day" I bet you this person is 40+ 1. That's just being pedantic, payment, compensation, you understood very clearly what I said. It's not true that most wanted to go back, in fact, many more Indians came after as free people. 2. Lmfao what 3. No one ever said the British 4. "due to state support as hard work" What???? Also, that is a shockingly racist lie, neither the statistics nor reality reflect that statement. 5. So which is it, is it that the Indians prospered due to state support, or is it that the state was built by Africans? You're gonna have to pick one. Also, that is factually incorrect, but it's a very convenient lie that requires an entire history lesson to disprove, we can get into it when you reply. 6. No, it is entirely the older generation that clings to this pointless divide, the younger generation does not care. Also it's obvious that you refuse to admit any wrongdoing, or superiority complex, and clearly unwilling to admit that ethnic relations require fixing. You echo your own opinion, not that of Trinidad's, there's a reason the outsiders see something you don't, stop being so jealous, maybe then you won't feel so insecure that you need to mention "rather building the institutions of state and most of the critical infrastructure in the country. There is a significant black professional class and a smaller but notable black business class" Reeks of insecurity, I didn't mention any Indian accomplishments without balancing it with African accomplishments, because unlike you, the only team I'm playing for is Trinidad, not Indo Trinidad or Afro Trinidad.

@@chickenpotpie4045 I will admit that at first I was a bit confused by the tone of your response but then I re-read my own reply and realized that the way I carried across some of my points did sound a bit inflammatory for which I apologize. However in this response I will try my best to be less so: 1. I was not trying to be purposely obtuse but the connotation of what you said was indeed quite different from what I said. 2. It is a historical fact that a)The British distributed land that they deemed undesirable to the former indentured servants and b) Indians tended to have very large families which made inheritance difficult when parents died. These are not my words but rather what I was taught in history lessons up to the tertiary level. 3. I stand corrected then 4. I was not trying to be racist and I apologize profusely if it came across that way but it is true the the majority of people in colonial T&T (and in the immediate post independence era) of all races were poor and poorly educated. I wish I could link my sources here but unfortunately TH-cam does not allow me to do that. 5. I was not trying to suggest that Afro Trinidadians were primarily responsible for state building but rather that they contributed significantly to it. They did not spend their time singing and dancing as you suggest. 6. I am well aware that ethnic relations in T&T are difficult but I completely reject the notion that older people are the main propagators of this and as a younger person myself I witness first hand the unfortunate scourge of prejudice that permeates every age group in the country. My response comes not from jealously or insecurity, because quite frankly I have no reason to feel those things, but from the obvious racial dog whistling that was present throughout your entire comment. Saying something like 'The Africans spent most of their time post Brits partying and living life' is not only highly inaccurate but extremely offensive and points to a wider misunderstanding of other races in general (this was only one of the many unfortunate things that you said). I want to reiterate that my response was neither meant to be hostile nor insensitive but I could not see the kind of glaring misrepresentations that I have been seeing my entire life in your comment and say nothing about it.

@@Rman775 1. I understand the difference you're pointing out, and you are correct, it wasn't a pre established payment, it was a post work compensation in lieu of a return ticket. 2. A. True. B. Somewhat true, some of the more vocal cases of land fighting amongst Indian families were widely publicized, but in general, it's not actually as common as you might be led to believe, else there wouldn't be very many families left, it's more common that it's equally divided, which leads to infighting as they were all forced to reside within fairly close quarters. 4. I appreciate that that wasn't your intent, but I don't think there was any reason to mention it, I didn't say anything about literacy rates of either ethnicity. 5. I think maybe you misunderstood that this was a compliment? Calypso and Soca has very little to do with Indians and yet it's the representation of our culture, a culture that Indo Trinis are very proud of. I didn't say the African community weren't involved in building our country's state institutions, I said that they built our culture as well. This is what I meant by insecurity, you automatically assumed I meant it negatively, singing and dancing is our culture, it was a compliment. 6. This is simply factually false, and this is how I know you're over 40, because you don't understand the societal expectations of social media. Sure you can be racist in the real world, but unlike the real world, the repercussions come MUCH quicker on social media, and can have much harsher penalties, people's lives have been completely destroyed by cancel culture. I'm not trying to say there aren't racist people, there are lots of them, but the only people I see making a conscious effort to fix that problem, is the younger generations, I see people like you fighting us at every turn. The old heads say what you're saying, just bury your head in the sand and pretend that the problem is insurmountable. This is why I said you were insecure, you immediately took offense to even the slightest inkling of an Indian talking good about themselves, to the point that you interpreted compliments as insults and imagined insults out of thin air, why? Why do you not believe the words coming out of your own mouth? If you truly believed in those accomplishments, you wouldn't feel the compulsion to tell me that, did I mention ANY Indian accomplishments? I didn't make it a competition, you did. Talking about dog whistling as if you weren't blatantly anti Indian throughout that whole insulting rant. This two facedness is one of the most insidious parts of dealing with old head racists and is one of the easiest ways to spot you, you always try to pretend like you're a good person after spitting venom.
