    OK if I’m being super picky, the instructional video is a little too sales pitchy, this is the elixir of the gods, it can do anything and it’s fool proof etc. but - - - he’s basically right. I used Odie’s on a couple of restoration projects of late, and I can’t for the life of me now understand how come someone didn’t figure this out sooner. This is by far and away the best hand rubbed finish you could apply to any project. And for many reasons. And I’m an old danish oil, and Maloof mixture, hand wax, and even shellac guy. Occasionally lacquer. This stuff is the real deal.

    It’s also exciting for me to have found a product that’s natural. I’ve got autoimmune disease so need to be really careful with chemical things. What a life saver Odie’s is!

    IT IS AMAZING HOW MANY PROFESSIONAL WOODWORKERS DEMONSTRATE AND REVIEW ODIES OIL WITHOUT BOTHERING TO FOLLOW THE MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS. THEY THEN COMMENT HOW IT DOES NOT HOLD UP OR LOOK GOOD OVER TIME. I AM AN AMATURE WOOD WORKER BUT BY FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THIS VIDEO I HAVE ACHIEVED BEAUTIFUL RESULTS. The only question I have for the manufacturer is how fine of a grit can I use on DOUGLASS FIR and still get the desired result. I am waiting to finish a douglass fir project because I have heard that fir can be challenging to finish if you sand it too fine (perhaps I am wrong, but if someone can answer this I would appreciate it).

    Very informative video.
    In video you mentioned you can touch it right after buffing, in the comments someone asked about spilt wine your reply was after being ’fully cured’.
    What is the ‘fully cured’ time?

    • @Odiesoil
      @Odiesoil  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes, you can use your piece straight away, however, you need to allow it to fully cure (like with any other product on the market) for 3/5 days before you expose it to liquids.

    • @Odiesoil
      @Odiesoil  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Odie’s Oil will help restore and freshen up an already finished piece but the previous finish will be the barrier between Odie’s and the bare wood. If the previous finish is prone to failure, Odie’s can only help so much in the long run. To get the full benefits of our finishes we recommend to apply to the bare wood.

  • @matthonea7939

    Hi there! Can you use some type of buffer for applying the initial oil? I have limited strength so it was quite difficult to do this on my first project but I liked the finish so well that I want to continue to use Odie’s.

    • @Odiesoil
      @Odiesoil  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, you can! You can use a non woven pad which will stick to any hook and loop disc on a palm sander. Apply sparingly, being sure not to over apply the oil during application. Do not use the machine to remove and buff off the excess though, do this by hand with a 100% cotton terry towel.

    Anyone use a 6 inch buffer with Odie's? I've been applying to Tigerwood with gray scotch by hand but it's taking more oil and way more elbow grease than in the videos. The Tigerwood seems way more porous than Walnut so it's not stretching as far.

    • @Odiesoil
      @Odiesoil  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Real Tiger wood is a fairly dense hardwood with a Janka Hardness of approximately 2170. You should be getting close to the same coverage as in the video, but slightly less, also your sanding level will have a factor in the coverage. You can apply the oil mechanically, just be sure not to use to much, and more importantly, be sure to buff off any and all excess oil until dry to touch.

    Thanks in advance

    • @Odiesoil
      @Odiesoil  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      hello, you can get a high gloss with Odie's oil if you sand high, usually up to 800. One coat is enough, however more coats more layers of protection, you can add more protection and beautify your piece by following with the butter or wax

  • @brauckstar
    @brauckstar ปีที่แล้ว

    I am restoring 100 year old mission style oak columns. I used Odie’s & loved the finish. The wood drank up the oil. So much so that when I buffed it off there was little residue. Does this mean I didn’t use enough?

    • @Odiesoil
      @Odiesoil  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You do want to get the wood to the point of full saturation (to where no more oil will be accepted) for soft woods, old dry wood, or punky wood it’s best to do multiple light coats with a day between coats until the wood becomes fully saturated. It’s still important to do a proper buff off after every application to ensure any excess or residual oil on the surface gets removed.

    If I finished top and bottom of a table with Cornwallis super duper everlasting + creative colors pigment 3 days ago and I plan to do a second coat of the original Odie’s oil tomorrow. Do I need to add a second coat to the bottom of the table or is it overkill?

    • @Odiesoil
      @Odiesoil  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi!
      Thanks for choosing Odie’s to finish your table! The underside of the table is typically fine with just the one coat but it wouldn’t hurt to apply another light coat to make sure it is all sealed up equally to the topside. It’s important to make sure both side are equally sealed to prevent any difference in moisture gain and loss. This will ensure wood movement will be kept to a minimum and help prevent any warping and cupping.

After 2 hours, I buffed with a terry cloth, and no excess was coming off with a paper towel, however, there was no shine on either piece. So, I applied a bit more, and worked that in. Waited 2 hours, buffed again, and still no shine. I'm really putting in the elbow grease on the buffing, but neither piece has a luster. I was expecting the 800 grit to be satin, but both pieces are matte. What is the trick to getting a shine?

      We do recommend using a non-woven pad rated equal to or just higher than your last sanding grit. They are always available on our website! A good finish sander is needed along with quality materials. Take your time and be thorough... do not skip any grits and you will find it easy to get a high sheen.

    So what do I do if I want a higher shine? Put a second coat down or use a different product?

    • @Odiesoil
      @Odiesoil  ปีที่แล้ว

      The sheen is primarily dictated by the surface preparation (sanding in most cases) the higher you sand, the higher the sheen. This takes place before the finish is applied. Once the finish is applied, you can micro-build upon the finish with additional coats to increase the sheen, depth, and luster. you can also increase the sheen by burnishing the surface with a higher (than your last sanding) grit non-woven pad or even sand between coats, you would also use this higher-rated pad to apply the finish.

    Started woodworking less than two years ago. All I have to say is, where’ve you been all my life? Oldie’s checks off every box for what I’m looking for in a finish (seriously, I’m not being paid to say this). I needed a food safe finish that 1)doesn’t go rancid 2) I don’t have to worry about a person having allergies, and where food safe isn’t a necessity provides 3) protection against water 4) is UV resistant (so my projects done in cedar won’t fade). I thought I was going to have to figure out at least 3 primary finishes to always have in my arsenal in order to meet the necessary criteria for different projects. So, this will basically be the only finish I foresee using from now on, unless someone requests otherwise. One question, if this is the right venue: for things such as cooking spoons, how often does Odie’s need to be reapplies? Just wondering if I should continue sending a single use bit of oil to my customers with their purchase (this expense is out of my pocket because that’s how much I want my customers to have a good experience. Cuz that’s what it’s all about, sharing the beauty of our work).

We typically recommend choosing a pad rated just higher then your last sanding grit as the slight abrasiveness does have its benefits. Our pads are as follows. With our finishes there are no sanding restrictions or limitations! The sheen is primarily dictated by the sanding. The higher you sand, the higher the sheen. 180-320 for matte to low satin sheen, 400-600 for satin to medium/ medium high sheen 800+ for high sheen. You can also build upon sheen, depth and lustre with additional coats.

      1)What is the minimum dry time for a table? We want to renew our dining room table, but don’t have a week to wait for it to dry.
      What would you say is the minimum time to wait for use, and perhaps the precautions to keep in mind while using until it’s fully cured?
      2) can you help me calculate how much odies oil I need for a table that is 1.4meters x 1.4 meters.
      3) is it best to put two coats for a table? If so, how much do you reccomend in between coats?

      Thank you 😊

    • @Odiesoil
      @Odiesoil  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TzufFamilyBand we typically recommend 3-5 days cure time before being subjected to standing liquids. The table can be ready for light duty use the next day otherwise but it’s best to tread lightly. These minimum recommendations would apply to any finish.
      Once the applicator pad is saturated with Odie’s Oil you’ll get approximately 22+ Sq ft of coverage per ounce of oil on hardwoods like oak, cherry, walnut, maple….
      One properly applied coat of Odie’s Oil is all that’s needed for protection and durability. The only thing better then one coat of Odie’s is two coats! With additional coats you will micro build upon the finish adding a little more sheen, depth, lustre and that silky smooth feel.
      We do not recommend using any other non Odie’s brand of finish or wax over Odie’s as we cannot guarantee a proper bond or performance. If looking to add a wax coat, we recommend Odie’s wax. We would recommend waiting 3-5 days before applying the wax.

    What about adding a ceramic coating?

    • @Odiesoil
      @Odiesoil  ปีที่แล้ว

      We do not advocate the use of any ceramic coating as they contain harmful and dangerous substances. Beyond that, we do not recommend the use of any other finish to be applied over an Odie’s finish as we cannot guarantee a proper bond. A properly applied Odie’s finish will withstand much abuse and is very easily maintained if and when needed. We would recommend to read our blog posts on our website for more information.

    Are this waterprooft ? And how often do you have to apply it?

    • @Odiesoil
      @Odiesoil  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, all our finishes are waterproof if applied correct and allowed to fully cure up to 3/5 days. Is no need to apply every month, just when is needed all according on exposure could be after many years, or every year.

      As long as the finish is applied correctly, and allowed to be fully cured you should get a water-repellant finish and stain resistant.

      Because we don’t participate in providing our products to people inexperienced with use of our finishes for their opinions. We also do not pay to play. Our many thousands of customers worldwide use our finishes based on the merits and quality of our products. With the exception of one individual we do not engage with sponsorships or affiliate programs like the majority of the competition. Influencers get upset when we do not participate in their tactics but we too often find them to be disingenuous and we want our users not to be influenced by someone getting paid to promote our products. We much rather like the honest approach of genuine word of mouth by actual users and lovers of our products.

    What if the wood has a finish

    • @Odiesoil
      @Odiesoil  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would be best to strip or sand it off and start from the bare wood. An existing finish will be the barrier between Odie’s and the bare wood and if the existing finish is prone to failure, there’s only so much Odie’s can do. It will however help restore and refresh it much more easily than most of all other finishes if a complete strip refinish simply is not worth the effort.
